The figure of Picasso has haunted the imagination of generations of
artists, his major stylistic periods and iconic works like "Les Demoiselles
d'Avignon" or "Guernica" provoking a wide range of responses.
With nearly 400 illustrations, this publication showcases the fertile
confrontation between Picasso and artists worldwide since the 1960s.
It was in the 1960s that exponents of Pop Art and Narrative Figuration such as Warhol, Lichtenstein,
Equipo Cronica and Erró, rediscovered the power of Picasso’s archetypal figures. By the 1980s, a
veritable ”Picasso mania” had developed. David Hockney’s Polaroid composites and multi-screen videos
echo Picasso’s Cubism and his exploration of a ”polyfocal space”. Picasso’s stylistic eclecticism, his
”cannibalism” of the old masters and the free technique of his later paintings inspired a new generation
of figurative artists including Georg Baselitz, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Julian Schnabel. At the same
time, the continuing challenge of Picasso’s "Guernica" has prompted politically engaged artists, while
others have re-engaged with the still provocative "Les Demoiselles d’Avignon" in terms of gender
politics, race and cultural appropriation. And among the works that illustrate Picasso’s presence in
contemporary media there is Rineke Dijkstra’s video installation "I See a Woman Crying (Weeping
Woman)", 2009–2010.

THE LIFE YEARS 1949 – 1959
In 2011 a sensational find came to light in Andy Warhol’s estate: an
extensive collection of drawings that provides impressive evidence of
Warhol’s artistic talents. Inspiration and source for these sketches were
iconic photographs and magazine illustrations, many of which were taken
from world famous LIFE magazine.
Drawing was an essential element of Warhol’s everyday life during his early years in New York. He was
particularly inspired by the blossoming magazine culture and its pictorial language. Extensive research
has now identified the majority of the sources he used. Warhol drew a large number of subjects from
the world-famous LIFE magazine.
This publication presents notable examples of the copying technique developed by Warhol and known
as “blotted-line” and presents the drawings in direct juxtaposition with the sources that he used. The
accompanying essays explore Andy Warhol’s unique design process and his very own method for making
transfers between the media of photography and drawing.

Colours are only reflected light, assembled in our brains, which is also
known as “grey matter”. Tom Jacobi spent two years photographing
archaic landscapes throughout the world. He discovered mystic places
that had been created by nature over the millennia and that are
nonetheless timeless. When photographed in the twilight world they
unfold their immortal power.
In 2014 the English newspaper "The Guardian" declared grey as the “colour of the decade”. In his latest
publication Tom Jacobi, photographer of our best-seller “Wo Gott wohnt” (2000), reduces “our world
to the essential; our blue planet is in reality a grey one. No colour pyrotechnics, no distraction, pure
introspection and meditation. It is a miracle,” observes Bryan Adams. From Europe to Africa, from
Australia to the Antarctic and from the USA to Patagonia we follow the long-standing Art Director of
"Stern" on his journey to the timeless beauty of nature. Monumental, moving and penetrating into the
very heart of things, we encounter landscapes which teach us to gaze in wonder and awe.

FROM CHAGALL TO MALEVICH
The Russian Avant-Garde, which brought about an artistic revolution
between 1905 and 1934, represents one of the most fascinating chapters
in the history of 20th-century art. Artists like Malevich, Kandinsky and
Chagall are highly esteemed the world over. But this movement was much
more diverse than is generally realised. For the first time this artistic
wealth is being presented in a major sequence of pictures.
140 masterpieces of painting demonstrate the parallel development of widely different styles, design
principles and aesthetic ideas. The avant-garde artists influenced each other and were sometimes in
conflict with each other. You could find advocates of representational Expressionism and supporters of
pure abstraction at the same time; styles like Primitivism, Cubo-Futurism and Suprematism followed
each other in succession. Surprising contrasts of works visualize the differences, so that the succession
of conflicting –isms is clearly demonstrated. Through this visual confrontation the picture of all the
many different forms of Russian avant-garde come alive.

BMW will be holding its centenary celebrations in March 2016.
Innovative technology, dynamism and sporting elegance – the vehicles of
the world-famous manufacturer with its headquarters in Munich have
been writing automobile and motorcycle history since 1916. This volume
tells of the fascinating success of the company in lively prose and with
numerous photographs.
It all began with the development of aircraft engines, but the brand with the blue-and-white propeller
would soon establish itself as one of the leading manufacturers of the automobile branch. Who has not
heard of the countless classics, from the legendary BMW 328 to the BMW M1 super sports car? And it
is impossible to imagine the motorcycle world without these machines with their characteristic twocylinder boxer engine. One hundred masterpieces tell the exciting story behind the success: technical
innovations, world records and victories in motor racing, entrepreneurial decisions and above all the
individual performance of the staff combine to create a multifaceted portrait of BMW.

THE BRAGLIA COLLECTION
The Swiss Braglia Collection is a treasure trove of German
Expressionism. This exquisitely produced publication featuring
full-page illustrations and unique views of the works of art by
important experts on Expressionism will be appreciated for its
pictorial reproductions, charming essays and as a catalogue of
the collection.
The foundation stone for the exceptional collection of Gabriele and Anna Braglia was laid by an
exhibition of German Expressionism in Venice. The collection will be made accessible to the public
in Lugano starting in September. Fascinated by the vivid colours and great expressive power of the
paintings, the Swiss couple acquired select paintings, watercolours and drawings, in particular those by
Paul Klee, Emil Nolde and the Blauer Reiter artists. These are accompanied by works of art by Lyonel
Feininger and Max Pechstein. This publication is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the
approximately fifty works of art, which represent important contributions to Expressionism.

FEATHER ART IN MEXICO AND EUROPE 1400 – 1700
Feather mosaics are images composed of tiny pieces of colourful
feathers glued onto flexible or rigid supports. This richly illustrated
volume presents the first comprehensive study of this distinctive
Mexican art form in the broader context of the dynamics of the creative
exchange between Mesoamerican and European aesthetics, materials
and artistic practices in the early colonial period.
Thirty-three scholars look at these unprecedented works from a number of vantage points, including
the disciplines of history and art history, archaeology and anthropology, as well as studies of natural
history and collecting, conservation and display. Published to complement a major international
exhibition held at the National Museum of Art (MUNAL) in Mexico City in 2011, the book is organised
thematically and includes more than 250 colour photographs illustrating feather mosaics in remarkable
detail, together with relevant paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings, books, European illuminated
manuscripts and Mesoamerican codices.

BY ELEANORA ANTINOVA
History is fiction and personal identity nothing more than historical
illusion: Eleanora Antinova is the renowned US contemporary artist
Eleanor Antin - Eleanor Antin is Eleanora Antinova, a black American
ballerina. Shifting the boundaries between art and life, this book
publishes the amazing memoirs of Antinova along with Antin's journal of
performing her, years later.
The ballerina Eleanora Antinova could be called an artist of oblivion. Years ago, the contemporary artist
and feminist Eleanor Antin found an unpublished manuscript of the ballerina's memoirs: the stories of
her lost, early modernist ballets, her romantic entanglements and her friends at the glamorous Ballet
Russe with its great maestro, Serge Diaghilev. Generations later, Eleanor Antin lived for three weeks
in New York as Antinova. Her journal of that performance brings back the now forgotten ballerina.
For the first time this publication brings together the journal and the memoirs of Antin and Antinova
accompanied by a selection of photographs from the performances of the artists.

F.C. Gundlach, one of the most important German fashion
photographers of the post-war period, has created a remarkable
collection of photographs and multimedia art by famous contemporary
artists. This publication provides the first opportunity to reconstruct
the view of the medium of photography in juxtaposition with paintings
and sculptures by these artists.
“The medium of photography has the right to be thought provoking”: that was the extent of it according
to Albert Oehlen’s view of the medium in 1986. This inspired the photographer and passionate collector
F. C. Grundlach to make additional acquisitions by important artists, from Büttner to Förg and from
Oehlen to Polke. Their anarchic will to express themselves, their wit and caustic criticism were shaped
into works of art that span a variety of media. This publication uses numerous illustrations to provide
an atmospheric insight into the spirit of the conditions under which they were produced and gives an
overview of the fascinating breadth of the medium of photography.

CONVERSATION PORTRAITS
PHOTO-SUITES 1974 – 2014
Christine Ljubanovic’s portrait photographs of famous artists, curators,
critics and writers lie between classic portraits and experience reports.
Developed as a complete contact sheet, they are living reports of the
artists’ encounters and also include the environment of the subject of
the portrait.
The publication shows for the first time an overview of conversation portraits by Christine Ljubanovic
which have been created over the past forty years. During this time she met, amongst others,
Thomas Hirschhorn, Gisèle Freund, Yoko Ono, Peter Weibel, Arnulf Rainer, Hans Ulrich Obrist,
Alfred Pacquement and Raoul Schrott, who has also contributed a poem to the volume. With the
selection of 60 portraits she has thus produced a comprehensive picture of the artistic and cultural
scene from the 1970s until today. In each case the artist and the subject of the portrait chose the
meeting place together, so that it provides the framework for the photographic conversation.

Bernd Zimmer, born in 1948, is one of the most important
representatives of Germany’s “Junge Wilde” (Wild Youth) artists. He has
developed an unmistakeable style that is characterised by a combination
of free, abstract painting and representationalism that is always
linked to nature. This catalogue is the first to provide a comprehensive
overview of his most recent series of paintings.
Bernd Zimmer’s œuvre is shaped by a profound experience of nature and the world. He has developed a
broad spectrum of subjects in extensive groups of works in recent years: from the “Cosmos” paintings
via waterfalls, shore scenes and dense vegetation to freely floating light reflexes in the “Schwimmendes
Licht” (Swimming Light) series. Entitled “Alles fließt” (Everything Flows), the publication accompanying
the exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Heidenheim and the Museum Angerlehner in Upper Austria
presents a selection of these cycles. The flowing transitions give expression on the canvas to the
internal coherence of his painting as an eventful implementation of natural events and perception.

KÖNIGSKLASSE III
In 1970 Gerhard Richter met Brigid Berlin alias Brigid Polk, Andy
Warhol’s legendary muse and enfant terrible of New York’s high society
in Munich. This meeting gave rise to Richter’s important “Brigid Polk”
series, based on Polaroid self-portraits by the eccentric artist:
a dialogue between America and Europe, photography and painting,
artist and muse.
The series about Brigid Polk is an important record of Gerhard Richter’s photo paintings. It is exemplary
of his struggle for a new self-concept of painting in dialogue with photography. This volume is the first
to pay extensive tribute to this multifaceted series and traces the history of its creation, which revolved
around Heiner Friedrich, an important gallery owner in Munich. The personal reminiscences of those
who were present at the time are particularly evocative of the avant-garde art scene of the 1970s.

Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov (1853-1939) is known for inventions
and engineering challenges that were ahead of his time, such as the
construction of the first Russian oil pipeline and the invention of oil
cracking. Shukhov's pioneering structural works, such as hanging roofs
and hyperbolic lattice towers, are among the most cited examples of
advanced engineering design from the turn of the 20th century.
The book expands a discourse on constructions with a wide range of themes, such as technology
transfer, control and standardisation in the metal industry, engineering education and scientific
quantification of construction knowledge. It explores the interconnectedness of all the factors which
have influenced the construction of Shukhov's structures, from the nomenclature of steel grades to
the technical background of construction workers. Behind each of Shukhov's novel designs is a unique
and elaborate project, distinguished by a high level of prefabrication and a need for a detailed project
realization. These inherent parts of the design are carefully reconstructed on the basis of archival
drawings, photographs and various written documents.

Roland Fischer’s “Façades” are spectacular photographic pictures:
a visual grammar of architectural structures, an alphabet of abstract
forms full of art-historical references. Roland Fischer (b. 1958), whose
work is exhibited worldwide in important museums, lives and works in
Munich and Beijing.
Since the 1990s the artist has been photographing the exteriors of buildings, of banks, corporate
headquarters and museums in the metropolises of the world, including Beijing, Tokyo, Shanghai,
New York, Hong Kong, Melbourne, Osaka, Boston, Brasilia, Los Angeles, Paris, São Paulo, Singapore,
Dallas, Madrid, Washington, Mexico City, Chicago, Toronto, Chongqing and Montreal. The results of this
breathtaking project form an unusual series of some 100 façades: a vocabulary of global architecture, an
inventory of city landmarks. The structures and colours of the contemporary metropolitan universe are
transformed into pictures that resemble abstract paintings.

APPROACHES TO A MULTI-SCALE DOCUMENTATION
AND ANALYSIS OF TRANSFORMATIONS
Singapore is rejuvenating and transforming her building stock
constantly and in comparatively short cycles. The book analyses these
transformations of the global city and shows documents, plans and
sources dating from the past two centuries. This publication discusses the consequences of the rapid changes in Singapore’s built fabric, also with
regard to cultural values and to the capacity of ecological structures. Three spatial scales are presented:
the territory, the district and the building.

From medieval altarpieces to media installations, from Albrecht Dürer to Andy Warhol, from Ansbach
to Würzburg: lavishly illustrated and in the words of the people who look after them, this volume tells of
famous masterpieces, reveals hidden treasures and invites you to embark upon a journey through the
past history and present day of the Pinakothek Museums in Bavaria.

Late Harvest is characterized by unusual – and unforgettable –
juxtapositions: contemporary art created with taxidermy sits alongside
historically significant wildlife paintings. The result highlights intriguing
parallels and startling aesthetic contrasts while simultaneously
confirming and subverting viewers’ preconception of the place of
animals in culture.
The volume presents nearly one hundred and fifty images from the brilliantly creative exhibition of the
same name, which was successfully mounted by the Nevada Museum of Art. It features such wellknown contemporary artists as Richard Ansdell, Berlinde De Bruyckere, François Furet, Wilhelm
Kuhnert, Polly Morgan, John Newsom, David Shrigley and Joseph Wolf, among others. No lover of
contemporary art or wildlife enthusiast should miss it.

Today Egon Schiele (1890–1918) is celebrated as an artist at the
forefront of the international stage, although he spent almost his
entire life in Lower Austria and Vienna. This publication uses the
most recent sources and previously unpublished photographs to
show how Schiele developed essential elements of his expressive art
and how influential it remains to this day.

The Spanish artist Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) was one of the most
important painters of the Golden Age. Taking as its starting point a
group of masterly children’s portraits from the high-profile collection
of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, this opulent volume shows
a representative cross-section of Velázquez’s oeuvre, which also
includes kitchen still lifes, religious subjects, mythological themes and
history paintings.

Sculpture – Tribal Art
Prints of designs have always been of utmost importance in architecture, arts and crafts, and interior decoration in European
countries. Indispensable to studios, they contributed to the rapid
dissemination of ornamental innovations and helped to assert the
newest styles. This special edition of Berliner’s seminal work uses
sumptuous illustrations and informative texts to present the development of engravings of ornament designs and the numerous variations on particular types of motifs. This compendium of the most
beautiful, important and unusual ornaments from the fifteenth to
the twentieth century offers an inexhaustible source of inspiration
for artists and those who are passionate about the genre.
