Carnival is not celebrated everywhere in Germany.
But here in Weinheim, we celebrate it on the marketplace, in the
city centre and in sessions (Sitzungen) that are visited by families
with children and by adults.
Carnival is especially celebrated in the Rhineland, in Cologne (Köln),
Düsseldorf and Mainz.

An old custom
The tradition of celebrating Fasching or carnival has already
existed for a long time.
It dates back to the 13th century, when first carnival parades
were held. There were also elected the first Carnival Kings.
Carnival is a time to be happy, to have fun and to revel. People
wear colourful costumes, dresses or masks. There are Carnival
parties, Street Carnival and parades with colourfully decorated
wagons.

Dispelling winter – Origins of German Fastnacht
In the past, the hustle and bustle of Carnival was intended to
dispel the cold winter season. Evil spirits that menaced growth
and harvest were to banish, and the good spirits that promised to
bring springtime were called.

During the Carnival season, you often see people with masks
walking through the streets. These masks are meant to scare. You
may also see witches with their brooms. Some of the figures also
wear bells that make a lot of noise.
Today, few people are aware of the historical roots of Carnival.

Further meanings – Christian background
Fasching or Carnival refers to the custom and the
festivities before the period of Christian fasting or Lent
begins. For Christians, the sobering weeks of Lent are the
preparation time for Easter.
Ash Wednesday (Aschermittwoch) is the first day of Lent.
Accordingly, the last day of Carnival is the preceding
Tuesday; the well-known Shrove Monday (Rosenmontag)
is the peak of Carnival.

a time when a lot of people drink too much alcohol.
Many people drink more than usually. As of this, some of
them lose their inhibitions and forget their education.
One may easily come into conflict with somebody, and
that should be absolutely avoided!

accept this!
Someone saying “No” has to be respected. It means that he or she intends to say “NO! Stop
it! Don´t go any further!”
