Before joining Molecular Biology „Zwicker Schnappauf & Partner Patentanwälte PartG mbB“, Stephan Process engineering was trained at the well-respected life science patent department of an Medicine international law firm. Stephan has extensive experience in the drafting and prosecution of German, European and international patent applications, in opposition proceedings before the European Patent Office and opinion matters in the fields of biotechnology, molecular biology, process engineering, and medicine. He has also been involved in nullity proceedings and in providing strategic advice concerning the creation of international patent portfolios. Stephan studied biochemistry at the University of Tübingen, Germany. He carried out his diploma thesis at EMBL Monterotondo, Italy, and his doctoral thesis in the laboratory of Prof. Nikolaus Pfanner at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Afterwards he joined the laboratory of the 1999 Nobel Laureate in Medicine/Physiology, Prof. Günter Blobel, at the Rockefeller University, New York, USA, as a postdoctoral associate. Stephan received fellowships from the “Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds, Foundation for Basic Research in Medicine”, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the „German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)“ and the „National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina“. His doctoral thesis in biology was honoured with the Pfizer Research Award 2009 for young scientists at Freiburg University.
