Content:
• Defining International Human Resource Management: Peculiarities of IHRM, the organisational context
in the path to global status
• Cross-cultural human resource management: The impact of national culture on selected fields in HRM,
models of intercultural competence
• Comparative Human Resource Management: National differences in selected fields of HRM (cultural
vs. institutional explanation), their causes and impact, future development (convergence vs. divergence),
implications for IHRM (universalist vs. contextualist paradigm)
• Human Resource Management in MNCs: Strategic IHRM (e.g. centralisation vs. localisation; transfer of
HR instruments between headquarters and foreign subsidiaries), international resourcing strategies and
expatriation, international training and development
Lernziele/Kompetenzen:
Students can:
• define and illustrate the key components of International Human Resource Management.
• analyse the impact of culture and the institutional context on IHRM and determine effects of
convergence/divergence.
• explain the role national differences make in the practice of IHRM.
• describe and give examples of how effective IHRM policies and practices lead to international business
success. apply principles and examples to self-chosen countries as well as real life case studies.
