Happy Birthday!
Edelweiss hat allen Grund zum Feiern – und zum Kuchen
essen. Am Montag, dem 19. Oktober 2015, wurde nochmals auf
den genauen Tag des 20-jährigen Bestehens angestossen.
Gäste, Mitarbeiter, Passagiere sowie Besucherinnen und Besucher
liessen sich am Flughafen Zürich kulinarisch verwöhnen. Unter
die Edelweiss Mitarbeitenden, welche die Kuchen den vielen
Menschen am Flughafen verteilten, mischte sich auch CEO Bernd
Bauer höchstpersönlich. Ein Chef ganz ohne Berührungsängste.

At Edelweiss everyone has a reason to celebrate – and eat cake.
On Monday, 19 October 2015 it was the exact day of its 20th
birthday. Guests, employees, passengers and visitors could enjoy
culinary treats at Zurich Airport. CEO Bernd Bauer also
joined the Edelweiss employees in person, to help distribute the
cakes to the many people at the airport. A boss who not only
enjoys being in the thick of things, but one who is also not afraid
of getting his hands dirty.

Travel Award
Zum zweiten Mal in Folge gewann Edelweiss den
Swiss Travel Award in der Kategorie Kurz- & Mittelstrecke. Darüber hinaus wurde Edelweiss in der
Kategorie Langstrecke mit Bronze ausgezeichnet.
Basis der Bewertung bildete eine Online-Befragung
unter ausgewählten Reisebüros.
For the second year in a row, Edelweiss won the
Swiss Travel Award in the category of short & medium
haul flights. Furthermore, Edelweiss was awarded
Bronze in the long haul category. The evaluation for
these awards was based on an online survey amongst
selected travel agents.
Neue Weine an Bord
New wines on board
Schon länger liefert das Wyhus Belp den feinen Jacquart
Champagner an Bord von Edelweiss. Neu beliefert das Berner
Unternehmen, welches zur Bataillard AG gehört, Edelweiss
auch mit ausgewählten Rot- und Weissweinen. Das Wyhus
Belp ist der grösste im Privatbesitz befindliche Schweizer
Weinimporteur und blickt auf eine mehr als 400-jährige
Firmengeschichte zurück. Als Partner von Edelweiss steht die
Firma für Herzblut, Flexibilität sowie grosses Know-how
dank drei Önologen und einem Master of Wine in ihren Reihen.
Per 1. Dezember wird an Bord der Rosé Champagner durch
den Champagner Brut Mosäique abgelöst. In der Economy
Class kommen Kunden unter anderem in den Genuss der
einheimischen Weine Aigle blanc und Aigle rouge aus dem
Chablais. In der Business Class verwöhnt neben anderen der
zweifach ausgezeichnete Weisswein Yvorne le Florin aus
dem Chablais den Gaumen.
For a long time now Wyhus Belp has delivered the Jacquart
champagne served on board Edelweiss. Now, the Bern company
which belongs to Bataillard AG also supplies Edelweiss with
selected red and white wines. Wyhus Belp is the largest
privately owned Swiss wine importer, and has over 400 years
of company history. As a partner for Edelweiss, the company
stands for lifeblood, flexibility and great expertise thanks
to three oenologists and a Master of Wine in their ranks. On
1 December the Rosé champagnes will be replaced by
Brut Mosäique champagnes on board. In Economy Class,
customers can enjoy the local Aigle blanc and Aigle rouge
from Chablais amongst others. In Business Class, the
two times award winning white wine Yvorne le Florin from
Chablais tickles the palate. The West Switzerland region
Chablais is the home of excellent wines. Stored in barrels,
the Chablais matures to an excellent flavour.

Neue Bemalung
New Painting
Während 20 Jahren flogen die Edelweiss Flugzeuge mit unveränderter Bemalung. Mit der Lieferung des neuen A320, der von
der SWISS übernommen wird, hebt die Flotte mit einer modernisierten «Livery», wie es auf Englisch heisst, ab. Die neue Bemalung ist eine Evolution der bestehenden. Beliebte und bekannte
Details blieben unverändert. Die Bemalung wurde fokussierter
designt. Ab November 2015 werden die neuen Flottenmitglieder
in der neuen Livery geliefert. Bis 2022 wird die gesamte bestehende Flotte neu bemalt.

Beloved and known details will remain unchanged, yet the new
livery was specifically designed in a more focused manner. From
November 2015 the new fleet members will be delivered in
the new livery. The whole existing fleet will be repainted by 2022.

merklichen Kraftaufwand bewegt man
sich leicht und elegant wie nie, kostet
jede Bewegung aus, mal dynamisch wie ein
schwimmender Pinguin dann wieder verspielt wie
ein Seepferdchen. Die hektische Welt über dem
Wasserspiegel hinter sich lassend, taucht man ab
in diese unendliche Ruhe, die vielleicht von ent­
ferntem Walgesang begleitet, aber nur vom
dumpfen Blubbern der eigenen Luftblasen und
dem charakteristischen Geräusch der Korallenrif­
fe unterbrochen wird. «Das ist ein sanftes, unre­
gelmässiges Knacken und Poppen, es hört sich
etwa an wie ein Kind, das Cornflakes isst», sagt
Carel von der Colff, der eine Tauchschule in Kap­
stadt betreibt. Die schillernde Unterwasserwelt
führte den Tauchlehrer zur Unterwasserfotografie.
Seine Lieblingsdisziplin liegt aber immer noch da­
rin, Menschen mit dem Tauchervirus zu infizieren.
«Allfällige Anfangsbedenken verschwinden vom
Moment an, wo man Fische zutraulich erlebt oder
einem Oktopus in die Augen geschaut hat»,
schwärmt der passionierte Vieltaucher. Führt er
wieder einen Tauchtrupp auf dem Boot hinaus ins
Meer, ist in allen Gesichtern aufgeregte Vorfreude
zu lesen, eine kribblige Mischung aus Abenteuer­
lust und Gespanntheit, was sie nach dem Sprung
ins Meer erwarten mag, das in Kapstadt so ist, wie
an keinem anderen Ort auf der Welt. Wo zwei Ozeane sich begegnen Das Meer rund um die Spitze Südafrikas ist spek­
takulär, denn hier treffen zwei Unterwasserwelten
aufeinander: Der östliche Indische Ozean und der
westliche Atlantische Ozean. Südwärts entlang
der Ostküste fliesst der Agulhasstrom und bringt
warmes Wasser aus tropischen Regionen. Nord­
wärts entlang der Westküste fliesst der Benguela­
strom. Dieser ist kalt, und schafft so ideale ozea­
nografische Bedingungen für den sogenannten
Auftrieb, das heisst, kaltes Wasser vom Meeres­

penguin and then playfully like a seahorse. Leave
the hectic world above the surface of the water
behind, dive into this endless calm, which may be
accompanied by distant whale song, but only in­
terrupted by the muffled blubbering of your own
air bubbles and the characteristic sound of the
coral reef. “There is a crackle to the reef, like a
kiddies cereal – snap, crackle and pop”, says Carel
van der Colff, who runs a diving school in Cape
Town. The shimmering underwater world led the
diving instructor to underwater photography.
However, his favourite discipline is still infecting
people with the diving bug. “Any initial doubts
disappear from the moment that you experience
fish at close quarters (they are less skittish) or look
an Octopus in the eye”, enthuses the passionate
diver. When he drives a diving group out into the
sea in the boat, you can read excited anticipation
on all their faces, an edgy mixture of the desire
for adventure and excitement, about what will
await them after jumping into the sea, which in
Cape Town is like nowhere else in the world. Where two oceans meet
The sea around the tip of South Africa is spec­
tacular, because two underwater worlds meet
here: The Eastern Indian Ocean and the Western
Atlantic Ocean. Southwards along the east coast,
the Agulhas Current flows and brings warm water
from the tropical regions. Northwards along the
West coast flows the Benguela Current. This is
cold, because it creates the ideal oceanographic
conditions for the so-called uplift, which means
cold water from the bottom of the sea rises to the

kleinste pflanzliche Teilchen, das Phytoplankton,
ans Sonnenlicht und vermehren sich dort dank der
Photosynthese. Dadurch wird das Wasser an der
Oberfläche nährstoffreicher. Das ist daran ersicht­
lich, dass das Wasser durch das viele Phytoplank­
ton trüber ist. Die Nährstoffe ziehen Fische an, die
ihre eigene Art ohne grossen Aufwand vermehren.
Denn Nahrung gibts genug, sie müssen nicht da­
rum kämpfen. Ganz andere Voraussetzungen ha­
ben die Fische auf der anderen Seite der Südspit­
ze Afrikas im warmen, östlichen Küstenwasser.
Dieses ist nährstoffarm und klar. Wenig Nahrung
bedeutet eine grössere Artenvielfalt, weil sich ein­
zelne Arten nicht ungestört vermehren können,

enough food, they don’t need to fight for it. The
fish on the other side of the South tip of Africa
have completely different conditions in the warm
water of the east coast. This is low in nutrients and
clear. Little food means a greater biodiversity, be­
cause individual species cannot multiply undis­
turbed, rather they must constantly fight fellow

sondern sich ständig im Kampf mit Artgenossen
die Nahrung streitig machen. Der Wettbewerb
fördert so die Entwicklung faszinierender Überle­
bensstrategien. Leuchtende Farben dienen als
Warnsignale und deuten oft auf Gift hin. Stacheln
sind richtiggehende Waffen, besonders an der
Schwanzflosse. Mit einer solchen kann einem Fut­
terkonkurrenten schon mal ein satter Seitenschlag
verpasst werden. Eine weitere Strategie ist die
Tarnung der Jäger. Sie passen sich zum Teil perfekt
ihrer Umgebung an, wie zum Beispiel der hoch­
giftige Steinfisch. Dieser wirkt im Ruhezustand auf
den ersten Blick tatsächlich wie ein leicht bewach­
sener Stein. Tarnung bedeutet nicht nur spekta­

Das gilt auch für eine riesige Vielfalt an Meeres­
nacktschnecken. Diese spezifisch beobachten zu
gehen, ist Carel van der Colffs Lieblingstauchtour:
«Man schwimmt langsam an die Riffe heran und
kann den Wasserschnecken zuschauen, wie sie
dort fressen, einfach chillen oder tun, was Mutter
Naturs Absicht war.» Diese Wesen sind zum Teil
winzig, nur wenige Millimeter gross, es gibt aber
auch welche, die bis zu 25 Zentimetern Länge he­
ranwachsen.

«Der farbliche Unterschied der Fische der Westund Ostküste ist unübersehbar», sagt der Experte
Carel van der Colff. Je kälter das Wasser wird,
desto fader die Farben der Fische. Dies ist aber
keine allgemeingültige Regel, sondern stimmt für
den Fall Südafrika und hängt wieder mit der Nah­
rungsbeschaffung zusammen. Die nährstoffver­
wöhnten Fische der kälteren Westküste müssen
nicht jagen, sondern können einfach das Wasser
filtern. Dazu gehören Sardinen und Sardellen. Sol­
che Arten mussten keine wilden Jagdstrategien
entwickeln und haben darum auch keine leucht­
enden Farben angenommen. Sie sind silbrig, grau
bis gelb-braun. Aus Sicht des Tauchers ist die
nährstoffarme Ostküste also attraktiver: klares
Wasser, angenehm warm und belebt mit einer
bunten Artenvielfalt.
Respekt vor Jagdrevieren
Wenn auch Haie nicht die Bösewichte sind, die das
Kino aus ihnen gemacht hat, so sind sich die Mee­
resbiologen wie auch die Tauchinstruktoren einig,
dass man sie nicht auf ihren Jagdgängen stören
soll. Haie jagen in der Abend- und Morgendäm­
merung und in Südafrika insbesondere während
dem sogenannten «Sardine Run» zwischen Mai
und Juli. Dann machen sich Millionen von Sardinen
von der Südspitze Afrikas entlang der Ostküste
auf in Richtung Norden. Dieses Spektakel ist den
Jägern natürlich bekannt. Um zu verstehen, warum
man die Haie – die im Gegensatz zum Menschen

species for food. In this way the competition pro­
motes the development of fascinating survival
strategies. Luminous colours serve as a warning
signal and often indicate poison. Barbs are effec­
tive weapons, particularly on the tail fin. With one
of those a competitor for food can be given a
powerful side hit. A further strategy is to disguise
the hunter. They sometimes adapt perfectly to
their environment like for example the highly poi­
sonous stonefish. At first glance, and at rest it
actually looks like a slightly overgrown stone.
Camouflage does not only mean spectacular
shapes, but usually also luminous colours in a col­
ourful world of plants and coral. This also applies
to a huge multitude of sea slugs (Nudibranchs).
Carel van der Colff’s favourite diving tour is spe­
cifically to go and observe these: “On these dives
you go slowly over the reefs, watching the water
snails, how they feed, chill or do whatever mother
nature intended.” These creatures are sometimes
tiny, only a few millimetres in size, but there are
some which grow up to 25 centimetres long.
The “faded” anchovy
“The difference in colours between the fish of the
west and east coast is unmistakeable”, says the
expert Carel van der Colff. The colder the water is,
the more faded the colours of the fish. However,
this is not a generally applicable rule, but is true
for the case of South Africa and again depends on
procuring food. The fish on the colder west coast
who have plenty of food, don’t need to hunt for
food, but rather can simply filter the water. This
includes sardines and anchovies. Such species
don’t need to develop any wild hunting strategies
and so also have not taken on any luminous col­
ours. They tend toward the drab with colours that
are silvery or grey to yellowy brown. So the low
nutrient east coast is more attractive from the
point of view of divers: clear water, pleasantly
warm and bursting with a colourful biodiversity.

Respect of hunting grounds
Sharks are not the monsters that the cinema has
made them out to be, and marine biologists and
diving instructors agree, that we should not
disturb them when they go hunting. Sharks hunt
in the evening and morning dusk and in South
Africa particularly during the so-called “Sardine
Run” between May and July. Because then mil­
lions of sardines run from the Southern tip of
Africa along the east coast in a Northerly direc­
tion. Of course the hunters are aware of this spec­
tacle. In order to understand why you should not
simply fear the shark – which in contrast to hu­
mans has already inhabited the ocean for over
420 million years – but respect and even protect
it, you should visit the Two Oceans Aquarium in
Cape Town.

Glasscheibe zu betrachten, durch welche es eine
Vielzahl an weiteren Meerestieren zu beobachten
gibt. Es geht aber nicht nur ums Staunen, sondern
ums Verstehen und darum, das Herz für diese We­
sen zu öffnen. Besonders die Kinderherzen sind
dem Two Oceans Aquarium ganz wichtig. Darum
sind alle Informationen gut verständlich aufbe­
reitet und unvergessliche emotionale Erlebnisse
möglich. Dazu gehört eine persönliche Begegnung
mit Pinguinen. Nicht mehr als zwei Besucher wer­
den begleitet zu diesen Charlie-Chaplin-artigen
Gesellen zugelassen. In den 1930er Jahren lebten
mindestens zwei Millionen afrikanische Pinguine
auf Dassen Island neben Kapstadt. Heute sind we­
niger als 19 000 Brutpaare übrig, was auf den
Schwund der Fische zurückzuführen ist. Darunter
leiden auch die Seehunde. Diese erlebt man am
besten in der Wildnis beim Schnorcheln, allerdings
vor allem an der Küste des kühleren Atlantischen

when snorkelling in the wilderness, but above all
on the coast of the cooler Atlantic ocean. Yet the

Why is it time to stop being afraid of sharks and start
being afraid for them?
Sharks are often viewed as fierce predators that would
hunt humans, which is inaccurate. Humans on the
other hand kill more than 11 000 sharks per hour! 90 %
of the world’s shark populations have been wiped out.
Killed for fins, teeth, jaws, skin for wallets, cartilage for
medicine, liver oil for cosmetics and also for fun.
What would happen, if sharks became extinct?
Sharks are at the top of the food chain in every part of
every ocean. They keep populations of other fish
healthy and in proper proportion by preying on sick
animals and maintain species diversity by preying on
the most available species. Without sharks, the balance
in the ocean will topple with devastating effects.

ls Pilot ist man sich das Kopfrechnen
gewohnt», sagt Felix Egolf. Mehr als 30
Jahre sass er bei der Swiss am Steuer
von Kurz- und Langstreckenjets. Zuletzt
pilotierte er als Captain den Airbus A340 und auch
den Airbus A330 – den gleichen Flugzeugtypen,
wie ihn Edelweiss fliegt. Heute ist Felix Egolf pensioniert. Doch das Kopfrechnen hat es dem passionierten Technik- und Reise-Tüftler weiterhin angetan. Statt sich mit Kerosinmenge, Wind und
Flugzeiten auseinanderzusetzen, ist er auf die Idee
gekommen, sein Know-how für die Elektromobilität einzusetzen. «Ich habe mich gefragt, wie man
die Reichweite eines Elektroautos in der bergigen
Schweiz am besten ausreizen kann», erzählt Egolf,
und er hat sich auf den Weg gemacht. Sein Testobjekt: Ein Kia Soul EV mit einer Batteriekapazität
von 27 kWh. Seine Teststrecke: Eine Reise über
den Brünig-, den Susten- und den Ratenpass. Das
sind 3900 Meter kumulative Höhendifferenz und

30 years he sat at the controls of short
and long haul jets for SWISS. The last two
aeroplanes he piloted as captain were the Airbus
A340 and the Airbus A330 – the same type of
aeroplane that Edelweiss flies. Today Felix Egolf
is retired. Yet mental arithmetic continued to
attract the passionate technology and travel tinkerer. Instead of dealing with kerosene quantities,
wind and flight times, he came up with the idea
of using his knowledge for electromobility. “I asked
myself how you could best exploit the range of an
electric car, in mountainous Switzerland”, explains
Egolf, and he set off on his way. His test object: A
Kia Soul EV with a battery capacity of 27 kWh. His
test route: A journey across the Brünig, Susten and
Raten Passes. That is a cumulative altitude difference of 3900 metres, and a total distance of 254
kilometres, According to the operating data of the
Kia Soul EV, this would not have been possible
under normal conditions: At the beginning of the
journey, the battery status indicator of the Kia Soul
EV showed a maximum journey length of 163

Normalbedingungen gar nicht zu schaffen: Am
Anfang der Fahrt zeigt die Batteriestandsanzeige
des Kia Soul EV bei einer Ladung von 100 Prozent
eine maximale Streckenlänge von 163 Kilometern
an. Hier setzt das Kopfrechnen von Felix Egolf ein:
Weil der Kia Soul EV bei Temporeduktion Energie
zurückgewinnen kann, ist es möglich, durch eine
angepasste Fahrweise die Batterie während der
Fahrt wieder aufzuladen und damit die Reichweite zu vergrössern. «Rekuperation» nennt man
dieses Verfahren, das in der Elektromobilität eine
wichtige Rolle spielt und Tüftler wie Felix Egolf zu
Rekordversuchen animiert. «Hypermiler» nennt
man diese neue Spezies von Autofahrern, denen

Kia Soul EV can regain energy when you reduce
the speed, it is possible to recharge the battery
during the journey, due to the adjusted driving
method, and therefore increase the journey length.
This process is called “recuperation”, and plays
an important role in electromobility, and motivates
tinkerers such as Felix Egolf to attempt records.
“Hypermiler” is the name for this species of car
drivers, for whom it is not about how quickly they
get to the destination, but with how little energy
they could cover the longest possible route.

Vorausschauendes Gleiten bringt Effizienz
Dank seiner Erfahrung als Pilot weiss Felix Egolf,
wie man ein Flug- bzw. Fahrzeug möglichst effizient von A nach B steuert. «Es gibt viele Parallelen zwischen effizient fliegen und effizient fahren»,
sagt er. «Piloten ziehen beim Verlassen der Reiseflughöhe die Schubhebel in den Leerlauf und betätigen diese – ohne dazwischen die Speed Brakes
zu aktivieren – im Idealfall erst wieder sechs Kilometer vor der Landebahn. Ein derart optimales
Umsetzen von Höhe in Flugstrecke bringt Flug­
spass.» Und er kann den Vergleich zwischen flie-

driving”, he says. “When leaving cruising altitude,
pilots put the throttle into neutral and ideally only
move it again six kilometres before the runway –
without activating the speed brakes in between
times. Such optimum implementation of altitude
on flight routes brings a pleasure to flying.” And
he can make the comparison between flying and
driving even clearer: “A heavy Airbus A333 burns
approx. 6 tonnes of fuel in the first half an hour of
ascent, over a distance of 300 kilometres until
cruising altitude. In the last 30 minutes of descent
before landing, it is less than a tonne. On my Susten mountain journey the Soul EV consumed

Soul EV 36kWh/100 km. Die Abfahrt mit Rekuperation ergab eine Art Minus-Verbrauch von 4 kWh.
So kommt es, dass ich auf meiner Fahrt auf dem
Sustenpass nach 34,5 % der Strecke bereits 61 %
der Energie verbraucht hatte, für die restlichen
65,5 % Fahrdistanz aber nur noch 37 % Energie
brauchte.»
Das Fazit des Hypermilers Felix Egolf nach seiner
elektromobilen Rekordpassfahrt ist positiv: «Der
Kia Soul EV verfügt im Vergleich zu seinen direkten Konkurrenten über die grösste Batterie zum
kleinsten Preis. Daher war er ein ideales Testfahrzeug. Nach fünfeinhalb Fahrstunden, 46 Autobahnkilometern, 35 Ortspassagen und drei Pässen
betrug der Gesamtverbrauch gerade einmal 10,31
kWh/100 km. Das sind 30 % weniger als der als
Normalverbrauch angegebene Wert von 14,7
kWh/100 km. Der Beweis: Effizientes Fahren lohnt
sich!»

showed a “minus consumption” of 4 kWh. So, on
my journey across the Susten Pass, I had already
consumed 61 % of the energy after only 34.5 % of
the distance travelled, therefore I only needed 37 %
of the energy for the remaining 65.5 % of the
driving distance.”
The conclusion of the hypermiler Felix Egolf was
positive after his electric car record pass journey:
“Compared to its direct competitors, the Kia Soul
EV has the largest battery for the smallest price.
Therefore it was an ideal test vehicle. After five
and a half hours of driving, 46 kilometres on the
motorway, 35 local passages and three passes, the
total consumption was only 10.31 kWh/100 km.
That is 30 % less than the value stated as normal
consumption – 14.7 kWh/100 km. The proof: Efficient driving is worth it!”

Jonas Hiller, was vermissen Sie in Kanada am
meisten?
Das Schweizer Essen, auch wenn man hier fast alle
Schweizer Nahrungsmittel findet. So gibt’s auch
ab und zu mal Raclette oder Fondue bei uns zuhause. Ragusa, Ovomaltine und Eistee von der
Migros lassen wir uns aus der Schweiz bringen.
Ansonsten fehlen mir meine Familie und Freunde
am meisten, die ich während der Saison ausser
über Skype kaum sehe.
Was erinnert Sie an die Schweiz?
Calgary erinnert mich definitiv mehr an die Schweiz
als Anaheim. Die kalten aber meist sonnigen Tage
hier fühlen sich fast ein bisschen an wie in Davos.
Die Menschen sind auch einiges «europäischer»
als in Kalifornien
Wie sind Sie überhaupt in Calgary gelandet?
Nachdem mein Vertrag in Anaheim nach der
Saison 2013/14 auslief, schloss ich im Sommer
2014 einen Zweijahresvertrag mit den Calgary
Flames ab.
Sind Sie schon mal mit Edelweiss geflogen?
Ja, in die Flitterwochen in die Malediven! Ich freue
mich, wenn Calgary endlich direkt angeflogen
wird.
Was machen Sie während eines Fluges am
liebsten?
Schlafen oder TV schauen. Doch mit unserer 17
Monate alten Tochter Noelia ist das nicht mehr
ganz so einfach. Da ist mehr Gang hoch- und runtergehen angesagt und aufpassen, dass sie keine
anderen Fluggäste «belästigt».
Jonas Hiller, what do you miss the most in
Canada?
The Swiss food, even though you can find almost
all Swiss food here. So, now and again we have
Raclette or Fondue at home. We have Ragusa,
Ovomaltine and iced tea from Migros brought from
Switzerland. Apart from that I miss my family and
friends the most, who I hardly see during the season, apart from via Skype.
What reminds you of Switzerland?
Calgary definitely reminds me of Switzerland more
than Anaheim does. The cold, mostly sunny days
here almost feel a little bit like Davos. The people
are also a little more European than in California.
How did you end up in Calgary?
After my contract ended for the 2013/2014 season
in Anaheim, I signed a two year contract with the
Calgary Flames in summer 2014.
Have you ever flown with Edelweiss?
Yes, on my honeymoon in the Maldives! I’ll be
happy when I can fly directly to Calgary again.
What do you most like doing during a flight?
Sleeping or watching TV. But with our 17 month
old daughter Noelia that is not so easy any more.
Now it is more about going up and down the aisle,
and making sure that she doesn’t bother other
passengers.
You are seen as a computer freak
Computer freak is the wrong word. Rather a “technology freak” who understands a lot about computers. I rarely play games, but am more the “team
IT expert”. Reto von Arx and Michel Riesen but
also the superstars Teemu Selanne and Ryan Getzlaf have been my customers.
Are you religious? Have you ever prayed before
a game?
No, not really. I skipped confirmation classes so
that I could go to ice hockey training.
What has characterised your career the most?
Luck? Discipline? Stamina? Courage?
Stamina and discipline are the most important
attributes. Of course you also need luck and courage to take a risk. I want to be a better goalkeep-

Sie gelten als Computerfreak.
Computerfreak ist das falsche Wort. Eher Technikfreak, der einiges von Computern versteht. Ich bin
höchst selten am Gamen sondern der Team-Informatiker. Reto von Arx und Michel Riesen aber auch
die Superstars Teemu Selänne und Ryan Getzlaf
waren meine Kunden.
Sind Sie religiös? Haben Sie schon mal vor
einem Spiel gebetet?
Nein, nicht wirklich. Den Konfirmanden-Unterricht
habe ich ausgelassen, damit ich ins EishockeyTraining konnte.
Was prägte Ihre Karriere am nachhaltigsten?
Glück? Disziplin? Ausdauer? Mut?
Ausdauer und Disziplin sind wohl die wichtigsten
Attribute. Klar braucht es auch Glück und Mut, ein
Risiko einzugehen. Ich will jeden Tag ein besserer
Torhüter werden. Dafür arbeite ich hart und verzichte auf vieles.
Die NHL gilt als Hafischbecken, Teamkameraden
sind gleichzeitig immer auch Konkurrenten.
Wie schaffen Sie es, in Drucksituationen so
cool zu bleiben?
Als Junior war die Erwartungshaltung geringer. Je
älter man wird und je höher die Liga, desto grösser wird der Druck. Da dies zum Glück nicht von
gestern auf heute passiert, hat man Zeit zu lernen,
mit Drucksituationen umzugehen.
Erinnern Sie sich an die Olympischen Spiele
1988 in Calgary? Pirmin Zurbriggen gewann
damals die Abfahrt.
Nein, nicht wirklich. Als Sechsjähriger hat man
andere Prioritäten! Vielleicht habe ich aber auch
einfach ein schlechtes Gedächtnis.
Sie spielten von 2007 bis 2014 bei den Anaheim Ducks in Los Angeles. Vermissen Sie Ihr
Haus direkt am Strand von Kalifornien?
Ja, etwas schon. Und meine Freunde, die ich während der sieben Saisons machte. Gleichzeitig
könnte ich mir ein Leben in Kalifornien nach dem
Eishockey nicht vorstellen. Die Mentalität und der
Lifestyle sind ziemlich speziell. Da fühl ich mich in
der Schweiz nach wie vor heimischer.
Oder eben in Calgary! Waren Sie schon auf dem
Calgary Tower, dem Wahrzeichen der Stadt?
Ja, letzte Saison, als uns meine Mutter besuchte.
Kann ich definitiv empfehlen. Gutes Restaurant
und ganz tolle Aussicht über 360 Grad, da es sich
um die eigene Achse dreht.
Haben Sie hier ein Lieblingslokal?
Wir waren positiv überrascht, wie viele gute Restaurants es in Calgary gibt. Nicht nur Steakhäuser,
sondern auch thailändische, italienische oder koreanische. Vor einem Spiel essen wir oft im Mercato. Einmal in der Woche holen wir uns in der
Khao San Thai Kitchen etwas als Take-away.
Calgary ist das Nashville der Nordens: Saloons,
Westernbars, die grösste Rodeoshow der Welt.
Wären Sie ein guter Cowboy?

The NHL is seen as a shark tank. Team mates
are also always competitors. How do you stay
cool in high pressure situations?
As a junior, the expectations were lower. The
older you get and the higher up the league, the
greater the pressure. As this does not happen
overnight, luckily, you have time to learn to deal
with high pressure situations.
Do you remember the 1988 Olympic Games in
Calgary? Pirmin Zurbriggen won the downhill
skiing.
No, not really. As a six-year old you have other
priorities! But perhaps I just have a bad memory.
You played with the Anaheim Ducks in Los
Angeles from 2007 to 2014. Do you miss your
house directly on the beach in California?
Yes, a bit. And my friends that I made during the
seven seasons. At the same time I could not imagine a life in California after ice hockey. The mentality and lifestyle are quite particular. I still feel
more at home in Switzerland.
Or in Calgary! Have you ever been to Calgary
Tower, the landmark of the city?
Yes, last season when my mother visited us. I can
definitely recommend it. Good restaurant and a
great 360° view, as it turns on its own axis.
Do you have a favourite restaurant here?
We were pleasantly surprised how many good
restaurants there are in Calgary. Not just steak
houses, but also Thai, Italian or Korean. Before a
game we often eat at Mercato. Once a week we
get take away from the Khao San Thai Kitchen.
Calgary is the “Nashville of the North”: saloons,
western bars, the biggest rodeo show in the
world. Would you have been a good cowboy?
I used to be an avid reader of Winnetou books,
and wanted to be like Old Shatterhand. But I
wouldn’t have been a talented cowboy. I can just
sit straight on a horse. Shooting and throwing a
lasso would not have been my thing. And I have
not really been able to connect with country music until now.
Which famous celebrity would you like to meet
on the ice in full gear?
I am waiting for Roger Federer to finally challenge
me to a duel on the ice. It would have to be a
combination of ice hockey and tennis.
How can you distinguish between the Canadian
fans and the American ones? And the Swiss ones?
With American fans – especially in California –
entertainment is the focus. There, hot dogs, crisps
and popcorn are as important as the action on the

to get rid of their annoyance with their boss, and
so complain about the opposing players and the

One of your hobbies is nice cars: German,
American or Japanese?
American cars are cheaper than German ones, and
have more power than Japanese ones. But they
also have worse value retention. Therefore, I have
multiple classic cars in the garage, regardless of
if they’re American or German. I even look at
Japanese cars, if they promise a value increase.

Früher las ich begeistert die Bücher von Winnetou
und wollte werden wie Old Shatterhand. Doch
ein talentierter Cowboy wäre ich nicht. Auf einem
Pferd könnte ich mich gerade noch so halten,
Schiessen und Lassowerfen wären nicht mein
Ding. Und mit Countrymusik konnte ich mich bis
jetzt auch noch nicht richtig anfreunden.
Welcher bekannten Persönlichkeit würden Sie
gerne auf dem Eis in voller Montur begegnen?
Ich warte darauf, dass mich Roger Federer endlich
zu einem Duell auf dem Eis herausfordert. Eine
Kombination zwischen Eishockey und Tennis
müsste das sein.
Wie unterscheiden sich die kanadischen
Fans von den amerikanischen? Und von den
Schweizern?
Bei amerikanischen Fans – vor allem in Kalifornien
– steht die Unterhaltung im Vordergrund. Da sind
Hotdogs, Chips und Popcorn mindestens genauso wichtig wie die Action auf dem Eis. Applaus
kommt meist nur, wenn auf der Videowand dazu
aufgefordert wird. Der Kanadier kommt vor allem
wegen des Eishockeys, hat meist auch gut Ahnung
und applaudiert bei gelungenen Aktionen. Der
Schweizer Fan kommt wegen der Atmosphäre
und um sein Team lautstark zu unterstützen, wie
es schon sein Grossvater machte. Im Stadion will er
den Ärger über den Chef loswerden und schmimpft
dazu über die gegnerischen Spieler und den
Schiedsrichter.
Eines Ihrer Hobbies sind schicke Autos:
Deutsche, amerikanische oder japanische?
Amerikaner sind günstiger als deutsche Autos und
haben mehr Leistung als Japaner. Leider haben
sie aber auch eine schlechtere Werterhaltung.
Deshalb stehen bei mir vermehrt Oldtimer in der
Garage, egal ob amerikanisch oder deutsch. Sogar
Japaner schaute ich mir schon an, wenn sie eine
Wertsteigerung versprechen.
Könnten Sie sich vorstellen, etwas ganz anderes
zu machen?
Sehr gut sogar. Im vergangenen Sommer konnte
ich Gin Kites, ein Schweizer Kitesurf-Produzent aus
La Neuveville am Bielersee, übernehmen. Ich kann
mir vorstellen, nach meiner Karriere mehr als nur
Aktionär der Firma zu sein. Ich bin selber begeisterter Kitesurfer, eine Leidenschaft, die ich vor drei
Jahren entdeckte. Ich hoffe, nach der Karriere
mehr zum Reisen zu kommen. Und freue mich aufs
Skifahren!
Was müsste zusammenkommen, damit Sie
die Karriere einst beim HC Davos ausklingen
lassen?
Im Eishockey-Business habe ich gelernt, nicht zu
weit in die Zukunft zu planen, da es meist immer
anders kommt. Im Moment ist mein Ziel, noch einige Jahre in der NHL zu spielen. Danach werde
ich sehen, wie motiviert ich bin und ob mein Körper noch mitmacht. Nur in der Schweiz zu spielen,

um nochmals zuhause gespielt zu haben, kann ich
mir nicht vorstellen. Dafür bin ich zu ehrgeizig und
hänge meine Schlittschuhe lieber zu früh an den
Nagel, als den Abgang zu verpassen.
Wie erklären Sie dem Schweizer Büezer Ihr
Jahressalär von mehreren Millionen Schweizer
Franken?
Dies ist definitiv nicht ganz einfach. Ich glaube,
dass man in den meisten Berufen gutes Geld verdient, wenn man zu den Top 30 der Welt gehört.
Zudem ist die Karriere als Profisportler sehr kurz
und das Rentenalter kommt einiges früher als in
den meisten anderen Berufen.
Im Fussball gibt es ein Sprichwort: «Der Goalie
und der linke Flügel haben einen an der
Waffel». Wieso stimmt das im Eishockey nicht?
Weil es im Eishockey nur der Torwart ist! Als Goalie hast du schon einen sehr speziellen Job und
brauchst einen dementsprechenden Charakter.
Während ich mich noch als einen der «normaleren» Goalies einschätze, habe ich trotzdem einige
typische Torhüter-Macken.
Wie zum Beispiel?
Ich ziehe zum Beispiel immer zuerst den linken
Hockeyschuh an.
Can you imagine doing something completely
different?
Yes, very well in fact. Last summer, I was able
to take on Gin Kites, a Swiss Kitesurf manufacturer from La Neuveville near Lake Biel. I can imagine being more than just a shareholder of the
company after I have finished my career. I am an
enthusiastic kite surfer myself. It is a passion that
I discovered three years ago. I hope to be able to
travel more after I have finished my career. And I
look forward to skiing!
What would it take for you to finish your career
at HC Davos?
In the ice hockey business, I learnt not to plan too
far into the future, as it mostly always turns out
differently. At the moment it is my aim to play in
the NHL for a few more years. Then I will see how
motivated I am, and whether my body can still
cope with it. I can’t imagine playing in Switzerland
just to have played at home again. I am too ambitious for that, and I would rather hang up my ice
skates too early than miss the exit.
How do you explain your annual salary
of several million Swiss Francs to the Swiss
workman?
That is definitely not easy. I think that in most professions, you can earn good money if you are
amongst the top 30 in the world. In addition, a
career as a professional athlete is very short, and
the retirement age comes much earlier than in
most other professions.
In football there is a saying: “The goalie and
the left wing are insane”. Why is this not the
case in ice hockey?
Because in ice hockey it is only the goalkeeper! As
a goalie you have a very special job and need the
right character. While I believe that I am one of
the “normal” goalies, I still have some typical goalkeeper quirks.
Like what for example?
Well, for example, I always put my left hockey
skate on first.

Klein und unbedeutend fühlt man sich in
der Algar de Benagil als Menschlein, wie
ein Sandkorn an diesem wohl spektakulärsten Strand Europas. Die überwältigende Kraft
der Natur verschlägt dem Besucher die Sprache,
lässt ihn andächtig verstummen. Gelb und rötlichbraun schimmern die Felsen aus Kalk- und Sandstein im Lichtkegel, der durch die Öffnung in der
Decke kommt. Diese Deckenbeleuchtung taucht
die nur über das Wasser erreichbare Meereshöhle
in eine mystische, beinahe unwirkliche Atmosphäre.
Eine natürliche «caverna magica», wie von Harfenist Andreas Vollenweider einmal auf dem Cover
seiner gleichnamigen CD fantasiert.
«Algares» nennen die Einheimischen diese spektakulären, natürlichen Höhlen, die sich an der gesamten Küste der Algarve finden. Felsgebilde,
über Jahrtausende durch Wind und Wellen ausgewaschen. Die Bezeichnung «Algarve» leitet
sich aber nicht von den Wasserhöhlen ab, sondern
kommt vom arabischen «al-gharb», auf Deutsch
«der Westen». Vom während Jahrhunderten von
arabisch sprechenden, muslimischen Mauren bewohnten Andalusien aus gesehen, liegt die Region
nämlich in dieser Himmelsrichtung. Von der bewegten Geschichte der Region zeugt etwa die
Statue von Alfonso III., 1248 bis 1279 König von
Portugal, vor der Kathedrale von Faro. Mit Schwert
und Kreuz besiegte er die Mauren, eroberte die
Stadt Faro und machte die Algarve zu einem Teil
Portugals.
Nur über das Wasser erreichbar
Mit 25 Millionen Touristen pro Jahr gehört Portugal
zu den meistbesuchten Ländern überhaupt. Neben der Hauptstadt Lissabon mit ihrer lässigen
Noblesse gehört die Region Algarve zu den beliebtesten Zielen. Der Strand bei Ponta da Piedade
in der Nähe von Benagil wurde von der amerikanischen Zeitung Huffington Post gar als der
schönste Strand der Welt ausgezeichnet. Gelbe
Klippen ragen hier am Rand der Küste in die Höhe.
Darunter die Höhlen, in Jahrhunderten von der
Natur geschaffen. Viele der Meereshöhlen lassen
sich nur über das Wasser erreichen. Am einfachsten und komfortabelsten geht das mit dem Boot.
Sportlichere entscheiden sich für eine geführte
Kayaktour. Ein Guide ist absolut zu empfehlen,
denn vor den schwierigen Strömungen sei Vorsicht angebracht. Begleitet von einem ausgebildeten ortskundigen Führer bilden ein Picknick am
Strand mit Schnorchel- und Höhlengang die Highlights eines rund dreistündigen Trips. Besucher
werden ersucht, den Respekt vor der Natur zu

overwhelming power of nature takes each visitor’s
breath away and lets him fall into a pious silence.
The stone walls of limestone and sandstone shimmer in a reddish-brown when the chamber of the
cave is flooded by the light shining through the
natural oculist in the cave’s ceiling. This skylight
immerses the ocean cave which can only be
reached by boat in a mystical, almost surreal atmosphere. A natural “caverna magica”, just as the
harpist Andreas Vollenweider described it on the
cover of his CD of the same name.
“Algares” is the term that the locals use to describe
these spectacular, natural caves which can be

water caves, it instead comes from the Arabic “algarb”, which means “the west”. For the geographical perspective of the Muslim Moors who lived in
Andalusia for centuries, this region was to the
west. A statue of Alfonso III who was King of

Cathedral in Faro, and helps explain a chapter in

privilege to visit. There should be no evidence left
behind that they were there, especially no rubbish.
Portuguese archaeologists have warned recently
that the largest grottoes are in danger. Graffiti
sprayed on the walls of some of the caves are
evidence of vandalism and lack of respect.

Near Algar Seco, stairs, hallways and even a beach
bar have been carved into the rock. Sports enthusiasts and athletes even treat themselves to a drink
here. This is because the Algarve coast is not only
a paradise for nature lovers, divers and golfers,
but especially also for surfers. Certain stretches of
the coast offer them absolutely perfect conditions.
Waves that are perfect for both beginners as well
as for professionals. And that practically the whole
year round. Because: The Algarve enjoys the most
days of sunshine every year, more than anywhere
else in Europe. The summers are hot and dry, and
even the winter temperatures seldom fall below
ten degrees Celsius.

start”, explains Miguel, who worked previously
as a barista in a small hidden away café in Palma, with his friend Tony. Together with Majo,

middle of downtown Palma de Mallorca, together a year ago. “Our beautiful terrace is
perfect for not only coffee, but also for a comfortable brunch on Sunday morning”, says the
