Gute Schwingungen in Wuppertal: Vom 2.
bis 7. März findet bereits zum vierten Mal in
Wuppertal das internationale Festival Spring
Vibes statt. Sechs Tage lang geht es in Konzerten und Workshops um das Vibraphon.
Wuppertal wird damit einmal mehr zum
Zentrum der internationalen VibraphonCommunity. Gipfeltreffen, Kreativtage und
Konzertreihe in einem, Treffpunkt für Profiund Laienmusiker – Spring Vibes ist einzigartig
in Europa. Wir freuen uns auf gemeinsame
Musikerlebnisse und Begegnungen!
Zehn international renommierte Dozenten kommen in dieser Wuppertaler Woche
zusammen, geben Workshops und gestalten
Konzerte. Das Dozenten-Team besteht aus
Tony Miceli, David Friedman, Matthias Goebel,
Behn Gillece, Mario DeCiutiis, Pascal Schumacher, Alexej Gerassimez, Florian Poser, Mathias
Haus und Anthony Smith. Die Musiker bieten
ein breites Spektrum mit traditionellem Jazz,
Bebop, Worldmusic, Electronic und Freiem Spiel.
Mit der Teilnahme von Alexej Gerassimez öffnet
sich das Festival erstmals auch für Classic und
Zeitgenössische Musik.

Good vibes in Wuppertal! From March 2nd to
the 7th, the fourth annual international Spring
Vibes festival is happening in Wuppertal. Six
full days of concerts and workshops, all focusing
on the vibraphone. Once again, Wuppertal will
become the international epicenter of the vibraphone community. Summits, jam sessions, and
concert series all in one, THE venue for professionals and hobby musicians alike – Spring Vibes
is one-of-a-kind in Europe. We are looking
forward to sharing an array of musical encounters and experiences!
Ten internationally acclaimed instructors will
come together in this amazing Wuppertal week,
presenting workshops and designing concerts.
The team of instructors includes Tony Miceli,
David Friedman, Matthias Goebel, Behn Gillece,
Mario DeCiutiis, Pascal Schumacher, Alexej
Gerassimez, Florian Poser, Mathias Haus und
Anthony Smith. These talented musicians offer
a wide spectrum of traditional Jazz, Bebop,
World Music, Electronic and Improvisation.
And Alexej Gerassimez’s participation brings
Classical and Contemporary Music to the Festival
for the very first time.
We asked the instructors why they’ve chosen
to participate in Spring Vibes, and what the
Festival means to them. More detailed questions

Warum wirken Sie als Dozent mit?
„Ich möchte einen Beitrag zur Zukunft des
Vibraphons leisten. Die Zukunft erwächst daraus, wie wir uns persönlich auf dem Instrument entwickeln und wie wir insgesamt das
Instrument einsetzen. Es geht um Geben und
Nehmen. Das Nehmen ist für mich das Spielen
auf dem Instrument, und das Geben ist das
Unterrichten. Die Absichten des Mallet-Institutes decken sich mit den Zielen des von mir
geleiteten www.vibesworkshop.com. Deshalb
ist es eine Ehre und ein Privileg, ein Teil von
Spring Vibes und seiner Zielsetzung zu sein.

Teilnehmer jeden Alters; ebenso für den Laien,
als auch für den Profi. Der Unterricht führt alle
zusammen, denn er findet übergreifend in einer „open-class“ statt. Worin liegen für Sie die

„Mir geht es vor allem um Gemeinschaft und
Vielfalt. Ein Workshop mit vielen Studenten, die
sich auf unterschiedlichen musikalischen Niveaus befinden, ist großartig. Denn das gibt den
Studenten die Möglichkeit, sich gegenseitig zu
unterrichten und voneinander zu lernen. Dabei
kann das Wissen unter den Studenten auf allen
Ebenen weitergegeben werden. So kann Wissen
gefördert werden und so wird es wachsen.“

Der amerikanische Vibraphonist Tony Miceli
ist als herausragender Musiker sowohl als Instrumentalist, Komponist und Lehrer tätig. Er
tritt regelmäßig als Leader oder Gastmusiker in
Konzertsälen und Jazz-Clubs in den USA und
im Ausland auf. Auf zahlreichen Festivals, in
bekannten Clubs und Instituten war der renommierte Vibraphonist bereits zu hören, darunter
das Degu Jazz Festival (Korea), Percussion
Festival of Patagonia, Reading Jazz Festival,
Melon Jazz Festival, Festival De Primavera
(Spanien), Somers Point Jazz Festival (New Jersey), Chilpo International Jazz Festival (Korea),

What is special about Spring Vibes? Why have
you chosen to participate as one of the faculty?
“I want to contribute to the future of the vibraphone. It‘s growth, which comes from how
we personally develop on the instrument, and
how we as a whole take the instrument. That
means giving and taking. The taking to me is
the playing of the instrument and the giving is
the teaching. The goals with the Mallet Institute
coincide with the goals of www.vibesworkshop.
com which I run, so it‘s an honor and privilege
to be part of this workshop and it‘s goals!”
Spring Vibes is an Impulse-Workshop for
participants of all ages, both for hobbyists and
professional musicians alike. The workshops
bring everyone together in an “open-class” environment. What types of opportunities do you
expect from this one-of-a-kind concept?
“To me it‘s all about community and diversity. A workshop with many levels of students
is great because it gives the students opportunities to teach themselves and learn from
themselves and others. It‘s important that
all the knowledge is passed around through
all these levels. That‘s how the knowledge is
nurtured and that‘s how it grows!”

Vibraphonist Tony Miceli is an outstanding
musician, performer, composer, and teacher
who performs presently as a leader and sideman in countless jazz clubs and concert halls
throughout the US and abroad. He has played
in festivals and clubs including the Degu Jazz
Festival (Korea), The Percussion Festival of Patagonia, The Reading Jazz Festival, The Melon Jazz
Festival, Festival De Primavera (Spain), Somers

Matthias Goebel ist Musiker und vieles
mehr, denn er ist auch Komponist, Arrangeur,
Organisator, Veranstalter, Dozent und Impulsgeber. Goebel gründete und leitet das MalletInstitut in Düsseldorf und ist gemeinsam mit
Tony Miceli Initiator und künstlerischer Leiter
des Festivals Spring Vibes.
Seine Lehrtätigkeit ist Goebel eine Herzensangelegenheit. Er wirkt und wirkte als Dozent
an der Musikhochschule Köln/Standort Wuppertal, an der Bergischen Musikschule Wuppertal
sowie an der „Offenen Jazzhausschule“
Köln. Neben seinem Schwerpunkten Vibraphon und Marimba ist Goebel in seinem
„Freien Improvisationsprojekt“ Raum3plus als
Pianist gefragt. Mit dem Tabadoul-Orchester
widmet er sich der Musik Mohamed Abdul
Wahab und bereist die arabische Welt. Goebel
hat unter anderem mit Markus Stockhausen,
David Friedman, Stefan Bauer, Philipp van
Endert, André Nendza und Christoph Hillmann

What is special about Spring Vibes? Why have
you chosen to participate as one of the faculty?
“Spring Vibes is a gathering place for mallet
enthusiasts. Within the course of a few days,
the Festival offers the opportunity for all types
of musicians to experience a number of vibraphone masters and to meet other musicians
who are just as mallet crazy. I’m trying to contribute both practice and instruction ideas.”

professional musicians alike. The workshops
bring everyone together in an “open-class” environment. What types of opportunities do you
expect from this one-of-a-kind concept?
“The chance to bring music, jazz and improvisation back into everyday life, break down
inhibition thresholds in improv sessions, and
live an example of a learning community. When
a participant grasps an instructor’s impulse, it
can immediately further and have an enormous
effect on his or her musical career for years to
come!”

Matthias Goebel is a musician and much more,
as a composer, arranger, promoter, organizer,
instructor, impulse generator and source of
inspiration. Goebel founded and directs the
Mallet Institute in Düsseldorf and, in conjunction with Tony Miceli, is the founder and
artistic director of the Spring Vibes Festival.
Teaching is Goebel’s passion. He has worked

and continues to instruct at the Musikhochschule Köln/Wuppertal location, the Bergische
Musikschule Wuppertal and the “Open Jazz
House School” in Cologne.
Aside from his primary focus on vibraphone
and marimba, Goebel is also a sought-after
pianist in his ”Free Improvisation Project”,
Raum3plus. He is dedicated to the music of
Mohamed Abdul Wahab and travels throughout the Arab world with the Tabadoul Orchestra. Goebel has collaborated with Markus
Stockhausen, David Friedman, Stefan Bauer,

is an important event where information is
shared and students and teachers have the
opportunity to interact on a number of levels.“

He is considered one of the most influential
vibraphonists in the history of the instrument:
American David Friedman is internationally
renowned as a vibraphonist, marimba player,
composer and jazz pedagogue. He has developed his own fascinating musical style that
relies on the diverse influences of the most
varied music cultures.
He has collaborated with many of the
great music personalities such as Leonard
Bernstein, Luciano Berio, Bobby McFerrin,
Wayne Shorter und Yoko Ono. Only a handful
of jazz musicians can boast such a wide array
of experiences as Friedman, both in the realm
of performances as well as recordings.
In the 1970’s, Friedman taught at the
Manhattan School of Music and the Institute
for Advanced Musical Studies in Montreux.
Since 1989, he is professor of vibraphone and
composition at the University of the Arts in
Berlin. Since 2005 Friedman also teaches at

weitere Workshops in den USA. Es ist eine
wunderbare Erfahrung, mit Studenten an
dieser Website zu arbeiten und sie in den
Workshops persönlich kennenzulernen. Ich
hoffe, bei den Spring Vibes-Workshops viele

Studenten und Profis aus aller Welt zu treffen,
um mit ihnen zu arbeiten und aufzutreten.“

kennenzulernen und von ihnen zu lernen.
Genauso großartig ist es, Hobbymusiker dabei
zu haben. Viele fangen mit dem Spielen als
Hobby an und werden vielleicht irgendwann
zu Semi-Professionals. Mit der richtigen Anleitung kann jeder, der etwas Zeit investiert,
wirklich gute Ergebnisse erzielen, besonders
durch die Möglichkeiten des Internets und der
angebotenen Workshops.“

Nach einer Dekade als Teil der New Yorker
Jazz-Szene hat sich Vibraphonist Behn Gillece
einen Namen als virtuoser Instrumentalist
und versierter Komponist gemacht. Als Musiker
war er an mehr als zwanzig verschiedenen
Alben beteiligt, darunter fünf eigene Alben
unter dem Plattenlabel Posi-Tone.
Gillece trat mit seiner Musik bei angesehenen Veranstaltungen auf, wie beispielsweise
im Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Kimmel
Center, Smalls Jazz Club, Smoke Jazz Club,
Fat Cat, Yoshi’s and Chris’ Jazz Café. Ebenso war
er bereits bei Jazz Festivals auf der ganzen Welt
vertreten. Neben seinem Wirken als Performer
ist Gillece auch als Musikpädagoge tätig. Er
gab bereits zahlreiche Workshops an Universitäten und Hochschulen in den USA. Zudem
hat er mehr als 200 Unterrichtseinheiten für
vibesworkshop.com erstellt. Davon profitieren
Percussion-Studenten auf der ganzen Welt.

“I’m excited to be a part of the Spring Vibes
workshop. For the past few years, I’ve worked
alongside Tony Miceli with the vibes workshop website and clinics in the U.S. It’s been a
great experience working with students from
the site and meeting them in the workshops.
For the Spring Vibes workshop, I’m hoping to
meet many students and professionals from
across the world, and having the chance to
perform and work with everyone.”

mich aus der Vibraphon-Gesellschaft heraus,
aber Matthias hat so nett gefragt, dass ich
nicht Nein sagen konnte.“

Pascal Schumacher ist ein Musiker, der an
die Grenzen geht, einfallsreich im Improvisieren und ein fantasievoller Komponist. Er zeigt
sich leidenschaftlich im Erkunden unterschiedlicher Musikgenres, daher ist es schwierig, sein
Talent, seinen musikalischen Geschmack und
seine musikalischen Einflüsse einem bestimmten Stil zuzuordnen. Eins ist aber sicher: Er ist
ein Vibraphonspieler mit einer einzigartigen
Begabung und Sensitivität, der es versteht
Ausdruckskraft in jeden Auftritt zu bringen.
Sein Gespür für Improvisation ist verbunden
mit einem großen Einfallsreichtum. So vermag
er einen eigenen Sound zu erschaffen, der sich
als ebenso visionär wie melodisch erweist. Als
kraftvoller Darsteller zeigt er sich virtuos, auch
wild und theatralisch, ohne zu pompös zu

“I am part because I thought it was a possibility to meet some nice people and share some
of my views on the vibraphone. Normally I
keep away from the vibraphone community,
but this time Matthias asked me in a very nice
way, so that I couldn’t say no.”

“Meeting new people and getting interesting

Pascal Schumacher is a boundary-pushing
musician, a resourceful improviser and an
imaginative composer. Keen to explore the
links that exist between many musical genres,
it is difficult to pigeon-hole his talent, his
taste or his musical influences. One thing
is certain: he is a Vibraphone player with a
unique aptitude and sensitivity who manages to inject panache and flamboyance into
every performance. His flair for improvisation
is married to a lucid inventiveness, which together creates an original sound as visionary
as it is melodic. As a physical performer, he is
skillful, far-reaching and theatrical without
being pretentious, making his performances
inclusive and interesting to watch.

Die MalletKIDS sind wieder zu Gast im ORT und präsentieren in einem Konzert ihre kreativen Ergebnisse aus den
Workshops des Festivals Spring Vibes. An allen Tagen des Festvials musizieren die
jungen Talente. Während im Konzertsaal die Meisterkurse für Profimusiker und
Studenten stattfinden, tauchen die jüngsten Musiker zusammen mit Salome Amend
und Matthias Goebel in die Improvisation ein. „Wahnsinn, so jung, so risikofreudig
und so stark!“, so kommentierte der große Vibraphonist Tony Miceli vergangenes Jahr
begeistert das Konzert der MalletKIDS.

Mathias Haus studierte klassisches Schlagwerk in Düsseldorf sowie in Boston Jazz-Vibra16 phon bei Gary Burton. Daneben studierte er
auch Komposition/Arrangement bei Herb
Pomeroy, Hal Crook und John LaPorta. Seit
1992 ist er als Dozent an der Hochschule für
Musik Köln, Abteilung Wuppertal tätig.
Als Vibraphonist nahm Mathias Haus bereits an internationalen Festivals teil wie das
Montreux Jazz Festival, das Hot Jazz Meeting
und das Oleg Kagan Festival. Er spielte zahlreiche Konzerte und auch regelmäßige Beiträge
in Fernsehen und Radio. Bislang war Mathias
Haus an mehr als 40 CD-Aufnahmen als Leader
oder Gastmusiker beteiligt und spielte als
Gast-Solist in der WDR Bigband sowie auch
in den Radio-Bigbands der deutschen Sender
NDR, SWR und HR. Er spielte unter anderem
mit Donny McCaslin, Jim Black, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow und erhielt zahlreiche deutsche
und amerikanische Preise.

Die Karriere des jungen Schlagzeugers und
gebürtigen Esseners Alexej Gerassimez begann
bereits im Alter von sieben Jahren. Bereits
mit zahlreichen regionalen und nationalen
Preisen überhäuft feierte Alexej besonders
durch den Gewinn des „Deutschen Musikwettbewerbs“, den 2. Preis des ARD-Musikwettbewerbs und bei der „TROMP Percussion
Competition“ 2010, einem international renommierten Wettbewerb für Schlagzeug-Solo,
große Erfolge.
Als Solist und Kammermusiker gastiert Alexej

regelmäßig bei Festivals wie dem SchleswigHolstein-Festival oder den Festspielen Mecklenburg-Vorpommern und wird von Orchestern
wie dem NDR Sinfonieorchester, RundfunkSinfonieorchester Berlin oder dem Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks begleitet.
Erste Veröffentlichungen als Komponist wurden

Born in Essen, Alexej Gerassimez‘s career as a
young percussionist began at the tender age
of seven. Already having earned a number of
regional and national prizes, Alexej was honored in 2010 by winning the “German Music
Competition”, achieving second place in the
ARD Music Competition and celebrated great
success in the “TROMP Percussion Competition”, an internationally acclaimed percussion
solo competition.
As a soloist and chamber musician Alexej
regularly gives guest performances at festivals
like the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival or
Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and also
performs as a soloist with orchestras such as
the NDR Symphony Orchestra or the Bavarian
Radio Symphony Orchestra. His works as a
composer have premiered in over 50 countries worldwide.

Ich bin aus vielen Gründen begeistert, an
dem diesjährigen Spring Vibes-Workshop teilzunehmen. Es ist für mich der erste Besuch in
Deutschland, einem Land, das ich schon so
lange besuchen möchte. Außerdem freue ich
mich auch sehr auf die Zusammenarbeit mit
dem brillanten Dozententeam, das dort dieses
Jahr zusammenkommt. Zu dem Team gehören
einige gute Freunde sowie wichtige Mentoren
in der Vibraphone-Gemeinschaft.
Als ein Pianist, der erst später zum Vibraphon
kam, habe ich wohl einen ganz besonderen
Zugang zu dem Instrument. Ich versuche immer
auch mein pianistisches, harmonisches Wissen
auf dem Vibraphon einzusetzen.
Ich habe 2015 viel Zeit damit verbracht, ein
Buch zu erstellen mit Interviews und Gesprächen mit den weltweit größten und legendärsten Vibraphonisten, einschließlich Gary Burton,
Maik Mainieri und Terry Gibbs. Dieser Prozess
hat mich noch neugieriger auf die Zukunft des
Instruments gemacht. Ich freue mich auf Spring
Vibes, auf das gemeinsame Entdecken und Diskutieren der aufregenden Möglichkeiten des
Vibraphons.

Ich mag es, mit Studenten aller Stufen zu arbeiten. Es ist spannend, bei Anfängern zu erleben, wie sie die Freude entdecken, auf dem
Vibraphon zu musizieren, und wie sie dann
das Instrument mit all seinen Möglichkeiten
erkunden. Ebenso erfüllt es mich, mit fortgeschrittenen Studenten zu arbeiten, die immer
besser lernen, mit komplexen Harmonien,
melodischen Mustern und Rhythmen umzugehen. Während des Unterrichts bemerke ich oft,
wie auch ich etwas lerne, oder wieder erlerne.
Außerdem teile ich die Ansicht meines guten
Freundes Tony Miceli, mehr Menschen unterschiedlichster Altersgruppen und Gesellschaftsschichten für das Vibraphone zu begeistern, um
es kreativ einzusetzen.

Seit fünfundzwanzig Jahren ist Anthony
Smith bereits als professioneller Vibraphonist
und Pianist tätig. Er unternahm als Bandleader bereits ausgedehnte Touren durch die
Vereinigten Staaten, war aber auch in Lateinund Süd-Amerika sowie im östlichen Asien
unterwegs. Anthony fungierte als Ausbilder
an der San Diego State University, wo er seinen
Master Abschluss in Jazz Performance machte.

“I am excited to participate in the Spring Vibes Workshop for a variety of reasons. It will
be my first trip to Germany, a country I have
wanted to visit for many years. Also, I am really
looking forward to interacting with the stellar
faculty for this year‘s workshop, which includes some of my good friends and also mentors
in the vibraphone community. As a pianist
who came to the vibes later, I believe I have
a somewhat unique approach to the instrument. I am always looking for new ways to
apply pianistic/harmonic knowledge to the
vibraphone. I spent much of 2015 compiling
a book of conversations/interviews with many
of the world‘s greatest and most legendary
vibraphonists, including Gary Burton, Mike
Mainieri and Terry Gibbs, and this process only
made me even more excited about the future of
the instrument. I look forward to exploring and
discussing the vibraphone‘s exciting possibilities with the teachers and students who come
together for this year‘s workshop!”

to work with more advanced students who are
dealing with complex harmony, melodic patterns, rhythm etc. Often, I find myself learning
(and re-learning), while I‘m teaching!
Furthermore, I share the mission of my good
friend Tony Miceli, which is to get more people
of all ages and walks of life interested and passionate about the vibraphone, and using the
vibes in creative musical situations.”

Anthony Smith has been a professional vibraphonist and pianist for twenty-five years. As
a bandleader he has toured the United States
extensively, also in Latin and South America,
and East Asia. Anthony served as the jazz vibraphone instructor at San Diego State University, where he received a Masters in jazz

on both coasts. His recent double CD, “Play
It Forward, Volume One and Two,” has been
well received by the NYC jazz community, and
his latest book, “Masters of the Vibes,” will be

Der Schlagzeuger Mario J. DeCiutiis absolvierte eine Ausbildung am Queens College,
New York, zum Bachelor of Music Programm
und lernte auch an der New York University
unter Morris Lang. Vibraphon studierte er bei
David Friedman.
Seit 1979 ist DeCiutiis für die Radio City
Music Hall in New York tätig. Als erster Percussionist des Orchesters hat er an unzähligen
Shows mitgewirkt. 2007 entwickelte er dort
die Electronic Percussion Section für die großen
Christmas-Shows. DeCiutiis spielte in diversen Broadway- und Off-Broadway-Shows in
New York City und ebenso auf National Road
24 Tours. Daneben war er bereits an zahlreichen
Studio-Aufnahmen beteiligt.
Seit 1986 ist DeCiutiis Vice-President von KAT
Inc. und wirkt an der Entwicklung, Herstellung
und dem weltweiten Vertrieb von KAT elektronischen Steuerungen mit. Zudem ist er Inhaber
von Alternate Mode Inc. Das Unternehmen fertigt die komplette Linie der KAT MIDI Percussion-Controller und fördert auch die Ausbildung
für MIDI-Percussion.

The percussionist Mario J. DeCiutiis earned
his Bachelor’s Degree in the Music Program of
Queens College, New York, and also studied
at New York University under Morris Lang. He
studied vibraphone with David Friedman.
DeCiutiis has worked for Radio City Music
Hall in New York since 1979. As principal
percussionist of the [Radio City Music Hall]
Orchestra, he has performed literally thousands of shows. In 2007, he developed the
Electronic Percussion Section at the Radio
City Music Hall to be used for their Christmas
Extravaganzas. DeCiutiis has performed in
various Broadway and Off-Broadway Shows
in New York City as well as National Road
Tours. Over the years he has regularly contributed to numerous studio recordings.
DeCiutiis has been the Vice-President of
KAT Inc. since 1986, and participates in the
development, manufacture and international distribution of KAT electronic controllers. 25
The company manufactures the complete
line of KAT MIDI Percussion-Controllers and
also focuses on MIDI Percussion education.
