We are pleased to announce the opening of the solo exhibition "Behind the Smokescreen" with
new works by Ivan Grubanov on September 11, 2015.
For Ivan Grubanov, the entire public sphere is a "smokescreen", an image artificially designed
in order to occupy the senses, while complex strategic maneuvers are taking place behind
it, unseen. Grubanov designs his painterly smokescreen with layers of oil, petrol and thick
black smoke, alluding to the ongoing battle for resources. He refuses to use a brush, but
performatively soaks the canvases in fluids and uses an old flag of the proletarian movement
as a tool to spread them - “Proletarians of all countries, unite”. Although his process is
non-pictorial and every painterly action has a deeper meaning, Grubanovs canvases carry
a c a pt i v a t i n g b e a u t y a n d p o w e r, t h ey p re c i s e ly m i m i c t h e m e s m e r i z i n g a n d d e c e pt i v e
smokescreen of the main publics that conceals what lies underneath.
The latest series of works by Grubanov is taking us behind the symbolic smokescreen, enabling
us to see through it and realize the hidden. Below the layers of paint and smoke and embedded
in the surface of the canvas, are tactical military diagrams used by the US Army and NATO
to deploy troops, organize the chain of command and establish battlefields. Deriving from
different army websites, these schemes illustrate that behind the smokescreen lies a global
battlefield created by the Military-Industrial Complex.
Born in Belgrade in 1976 and described by many art critics as one of the leading international
painters of his generation, Grubanov has had over a hundred solo and group exhibitions
worldwide and has received numerous artistic and scholarly awards. His painterly installation
"United Dead Nations" in the Serbian Pavilion is one of the most poignant artworks at this
year's Venice Biennale. The German magazin ART recently listed him as one of the most
important 14 upcoming painters.
The book "United Dead Nations" which documents his installation in the Serbian Pavillon at
this years Venedig Biennale is available at Loock Galerie.
In the frame of the Berlin Art Week Takehito Koganezawa presents new watercolors and
drawings in our showroom at Loock Galerie.

Wir freuen uns am 11. September 2015 die Einzelausstellung "Behind the Smokescreen" mit
neuen Werken von Ivan Grubanov zu eröffnen.
Für Ivan Grubanov ist die Öffentlichkeit ein „Smokescreen“, ein konstruiertes Bild, um die Sinne
zu beschäftigen, während dahinter ungesehen komplexe strategische Manöver stattfinden.
Grubanov entwirft seine „malerischen Nebelwände“ mit Schichten aus Öl, Benzin und dichtem
schwarzem Rauch und verweist so auf den andauernden Kampf um Ressourcen. Als Werkzeug
des Malers tauscht Grubanov den Pinsel mit einer alten Fahne der Arbeiterbewegung, um seine
alchemistischen Farbprozesse auf die Leinwand zu bringen. Die Fahne als künstlerisches
Werkzeug und Material verweist auf seinen diesjährigen Beitrag "United Dead Nations" im
Serbischen Pavillon auf der Venedig Biennale. Grubanovs Bilder sind von fesselnder Schönheit
und Kraft. Dabei bindet er mit malerischer Raffinesse politische Inhalte in abstrakte Malerei
ein.
Seine aktuelle Werkgruppe "Behind the Smokescreen" umfasst 8 Bilder, die das Unsichtbare
zum Vorschein bringt. Diagramme, wie sie von der US-Armee und der NATO bei Truppeneinsätzen
verwendet werden, um Befehlsketten und taktische Ausrichtungen zu organisieren, sind
Teil des bildnerischen und malerischen Konzepts. Die Pläne entstammen verschiedenen
Armeewebseiten und verbildlichen, dass hinter den „Smokescreens“ ein vom militärischindustriellen Komplex geschaffenes globales „Schlachtfeld“ liegt. Die Bilder von Grubanov
erinnern uns an die Existenz von militärischen Strukturen in unserer Zivilgesellschaft, die
verdeckt von Medien und entpolitisierten Institutionen fungieren.

führenden Maler seiner Generation. Seine malerische Installation "United Dead Nations"
im serbischen Pavillon gehört zu den herausragenden Beiträgen der diesjährigen Venedig
Biennale. Das Kunstmagazin ART stellte Grubanov in der September-Ausgabe als eine der 14
Neuentdeckungen der Malerei vor.
Das Buch "United Dead Nations", das seinen Beitrag auf der diesjährigen Biennale in Venedig
begleitet, liegt zur Ausstellung vor.
Anlässlich der Berlin Art Week gestaltete Takehito Koganezawa den Showroom der Galerie mit
neuen Aquarellen und Zeichnungen.
