Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,
Liebe Freunde,
bereits zum dritten Mal realisiert Urbane Künste Ruhr in
diesem Jahr gemeinsam mit internationalen Künstlern Lichtkunstarbeiten im öffentlichen Raum. Urban Lights Ruhr 2015,
das von Katja Aßmann, dem Künstlerduo Sans façon und Susa
Pop gemeinsam kuratiert wird, setzt diesmal die Ruhrgebietsstadt Hagen in ein neues Licht. Deren Stadtbild ist geprägt
durch historische Bebauung, Industriearchitektur, Nachkriegsplanung und die Auswirkungen der Standortverlagerung großer Firmen. Mit neuen Verkehrsläufen um dem Hauptbahnhof
und der Wiederbelebung der Flussufer der Volme und Lenne
befindet sich Hagen in einem Prozess ständiger Veränderung.

Die Künstler kollektive A Kassen, Taturo Atzu, Simon Faithfull,
Janice Kerbel und Anna Rispoli, sowie Sans façon selbst zeigen
Arbeiten, welche dazu einladen, die komplexe Stadtstruktur
Hagens neu zu entdecken und aktuell entstehende Stadtlandschaften zu erleben und zu aktivieren. Jan Ehlen realisiert eine
Sonderedition von Shiny Toys im Festivalzentrum und Studierende des Studiengangs Szenografie und Kommunikation der
FH Dortmund sind mit mobilen Installationen im Stadtraum
unterwegs.

In diesem Jahr ist Hagen neben Urban Lights Ruhr zum ersten
Mal auch Austragungsort von Connecting Cities. Unter dem
Titel In / Visible City 2015 produziert und zeigt Urbane Künste
Ruhr gemeinsam mit dem Public Art Lab Medienkunstprojekte von Ghana ThinkTank, Ricardo O’Nascimento, Andrea
Polli, Blake Shaw, Bruno Levy und Mark Shepard, die sich mit
der Sichtbarmachung des Nicht-Sichtbaren im städtischen

Dear Sir or Madam,
dear friends,
This year, for the third time, Urbane Künste Ruhr joins international artists to present works of light art in public space. Urban
Lights Ruhr 2015, curated by Katja Aßmann, the artist duo Sans
façon, and Susa Pop, shines a new light on the Ruhr District
city of Hagen, whose urban landscape is marked by historical
buildings, industrial architecture, post-war planning, and the
effects of location changes on the part of large firms. With new
avenues of traffic around the main railway station and the rejuvenation of the banks of the Rivers Volme and Lenne, Hagen
remains in a state of continuous change.

The artists ( collective ) A Kassen, Taturo Atzu, Simon Faithfull,
Janice Kerbel, and Anna Rispoli, as well as Sans façon them
selves show works that invite visitors to rediscover Hagen’s
complex city structure and to experience and activate the new
cityscapes arising there. Jan Ehlen presents a special edition
of Shiny Toys in the Festival Center, while students in the scenography and communication department at the FH Dortmund have spread through the city with mobile installations in
urban space.

This year, along with Urban Lights Ruhr, Hagen is for the first
time the presentation site for Connecting Cities. Under the title
In / Visible City 2015, Urbane Künste Ruhr produces and shows,
together with the Public Art Lab, media arts projects by Ghana
ThinkTank, Ricardo O’Nascimento, Andrea Polli, Blake Shaw,
Bruno Levy and Mark Shepard, all of whom address ways of
making the invisible in city space visible.

Hagens industriell geprägte Vergangenheit zeigt sich in einer komplexen Stadtstruktur. Das heutige Stadtbild vermittelt
eine vielschichtige Gemengelage aus
historischer Bebauung, Industriearchitektur, Nachkriegsplanung und den Auswirkungen der Standortverlagerung
großer Firmen. Aktuelle Veränderungen, mit neuen Verkehrsabläufen um den

Ruhr spotlights the city of Hagen.
The path of light will shine from
October 9 through October 25, 2015,
from Fridays through Sundays.

Installations by internationally renown
ed artists and artist groups form a path
of light that invites visitors to discover
and help shape a multi-faceted city. In
previous years, artists intervened in the
city spaces of Bergkamen and Hamm;
now Urban Lights Ruhr transforms
Hageninto a testing ground for light
and media art.

Hagen’s industrial past can be seen in its
complex city structure. Today, the city
conveys a multilayered mélange of historical structures, industrial architecture,
post-war planning, and the effects of location changes on the part of large firms.
Current changes, with new avenues of
traffic around the main railway station
and the reanimation of two river banks,
are making their mark on the reshaping
of Hagen’s urban space. Urban Lights
Ruhr sharpens perception for remote
spaces and those subject to a continuous
process of change; in addition, it seeks
to provide new perspectives on the familiar. The artistic interventions invite
residents and visitors to experience and
activate the potential of these new city
landscapes.

In the unesco Year of Light, the Ruhr city
will become a presentation site for the
international network Connecting Cities,
along with major cities such as Berlin,

Himmelblau ist die Sehnsuchtsfarbe
schlechthin. Und jeder Mensch hat eine
ziemlich genaue Vorstellung davon, wie
Himmelblau aussieht. In Wirklichkeit
aber ist dieser Farbton im Tagesverlauf
ständiger Veränderung unterworfen. Die
Installation »Pantone Perfect« zeigt diese
Farbveränderung des Himmels an einem
Tag auf. Dabei kommt ein Cyanometer
zum Einsatz: Das nach dem Forscher
Horace-Bénédict de Saussure benannte
Messinstrument kennt jedes Himmel
blau: 52 unterschiedliche Töne. Damit
kann stündlich genau definiert werden,
welche Nuance vorliegt. Das Ergebnis
wird am Vorplatz des Hagener Hauptbahnhofs an zehn Fahnenmasten angezeigt. Genauso blaue Flaggen werden
hier gehisst, wie sich der Himmel gerade
zeigt. Am Abend zeichnen die Flaggen
den Blauverlauf des Tages nach.

Multiple flags in the 52 pantone colours of
Saussure’s Cyanometer, an instrument he
conceived in the 18th century to measure
the colour of the sky, are displayed as a
collection for people to visit. At each hour
of the day the sky will be assessed through
the colour reader, the correct colour of
flag selected and presented to one of ten
sequential flagpoles to be hoisted into
position.

Die Arbeit »Sunset Sunrise« zeigt auf
zwei großen Faltblattanzeigen kontinuierlich an, wo auf der Welt die Sonne
in diesem Moment auf- und untergeht:.
eine Reiseeinladung zu fremden oder
bekannten Städten, genau in dem Augenblick an dem Ort, an dem das Licht zwischen Nacht und Tag erscheint.
The installation Sunset Sunrise evokes
continuous sunsets and sunrises across the
world, with different places where the sun
rises appearing in real time on two facing
split flap displays. Placed near the bus
and train station, it is like an invitation
to travel to foreign familiar places at the
very moment when light shifts between
night and day.

Ein Rummelplatz ohne blinkende
Lichterund Durchsagen. Mit ihrer poetischen Arbeit »Silent Fairground«
schaffen Sans façon die ungewöhnliche
Erfahrung von Fahrgeschäften im
Dunklen– und rücken mit der Abwesen
heit von Licht und schrillen Tönen die
›Übernutzung‹ von Beleuchtung und
Akustik in den Blickpunkt.

Silence in a city is an odd thing, normally
only happening at night when the city
lights are on. The 3am walk home from a
party brings an eery filmic quality to the
familiar streets and buildings. Our cities
are rarely silent, but our silence within
them brings a new awareness, alertness, to
echoes, hums, creaks and faraway noises.
Silent Fairground invites such an experience, to see a familiar place and experience
in a new light.

Luft, dieses unsichtbare Element, hat
einen erheblichen Einfluss auf unsere
Gesundheit. Particle Falls macht in
der Luft, die wir atmen, die kleinsten
Staubpartikel sichtbar: kleiner als 2,5
Mikrometer. Mithilfe eines sogenannten Nephelometers kann die aktuelle
Feinstaubbelastung der Luft in Hagen
ermittelt werden. Die gemessenen Partikel werden unter Einsatz einer speziellen Software in eine wasserfallartige
Video-Projektion übertragen.

Although air is invisible, it has a major
impact on public health. Particle Falls
is a real-time, environmentally reactive
video projection that allows viewers to
see current levels of fine particulates. The
waterfall-like installation is realized with
a nephelometer which measures the smallest particle, pm 2.5 ( the global monitoring
of this particle being one of the most recent
developments in aeronomy ). Fewer bright
particles over the waterfall mean fewer
particles in the air.

Genius Loci ist eine partizipative Installation, die gemeinsam mit den Bewohnern aus dem Stadtteil Wehringhausen
umgesetzt wurde. Alle Hagener Bewohner waren eingeladen, ihre ungenutzten privaten Lampen zu spenden, um
aus ihnen eine große öffentliche Lichtinszenierung zu formen. Die anonyme
Passage vom Bodelschwingplatz nach
Wehringhausen verwandelt sich so für
den Festivalzeitraum vom Angstraum
zum Lichtraum, der viele persönliche
Momente aus dem Leben der Menschen
vor Ort erzählt.
Genius Loci is a participative installation
realised with the help of locals living in
the Wehringhausen area of Hagen. The
latter were invited to donate an unused
lamp. The collected chandeliers hanging
at Bodelschwinghplatz transfigure an
anonymous passageway.
The installation presents a bit of each resident’s history, moving it out of the domestic sphere to illuminate the public space.

Videopainting ist eine changierende
Multimedia-Collage, bei der Portraitfotos auf Hausfassaden im Stadtraum
‚gemalt’ werden. Dabei verschmelzen
Abbildungen von Menschen verschiedener Herkunft, auch Hagener Gesichter,
mit den Porträts von Bewohnern der
Connecting Cities-Partnerstadt Jena
( Licht- und Wissenschaftsfestival City
Visions Jena ). Ein neuer Ort der Begegnung unterschiedlicher Kulturen
entsteht im öffentlichen Raum – eine
Reflexion über Echtzeitkommunikation
und die Grenzen der Privatsphäre.
Shaw & Lévy’s ( Sweatshoppe ) ‚Videopainting is a multimedia collage of portraits of
different people from different cultures on
the walls in public space. Where physical
bodies can’t go any further, Sweatshoppe
opens virtual doorways to a new public
space with his interactive paint roller.
During the artistic process, the portraits
gradually blur into an overlapping collage and alter from their originals. Transcending physical borders, a new place
of encounter for people from all over the
world arises. With their telecommunication initiative, the media artists explore
real-time communication and reflect on
the right to a room of one’s own, something
that we take for granted much too often.

Bereits im Juli hatten Hagener Bürgerinnen und Bürger Gelegenheit, ihre Probleme in oder mit Hagen zu formulieren
und der Künstlergruppe auf Postkarten
mitzuteilen. Diese kümmert sich nämlich um »Entwicklungshilfe für die Erste
Welt – Developing the First World«–
dergestalt, dass extra eingerichtete
Thinktanks in der sogenannten Zweiten
und Dritten Welt Lösungsvorschläge für
Probleme der Ersten Welt erarbeiten.
Man darf sehr gespannt sein, was dabei
herausgekommen ist. Die Ergebnisse
werden während der Urban Lights Ruhr
vorgestellt.
Ghana ThinkTank has been »Developing
the First World« since 2006. The artist’s
network collects problems in the U.S. and
Europe, and sends them to think tanks
they established in Cuba, Ghana, Iran,
Mexico, El Salvador, and the U.S. prison
system to analyze and solve. Then they
work with the communities where the
problems originated to implement those
solutions - whether they seem impractical
or brilliant.

Bei der Arbeit Full Moon Hagen wird die
Straßenbeleuchtung am Johanniskirchplatz und auf dem Marktplatz je nach
Mondphase gedimmt. Bei Vollmond
etwa wird der niedrigste Dimmgrad erreicht, bei Neumond hingegen mehr als
Normalbeleuchtung – und dazwischen
die entsprechenden Zwischenstufen. Die
für den britischen Turner-Preis 2015 nominierte Künstlerin Janice Kerbel reflektiert mit ihrer Arbeit die Verflechtung
zwischen urbanem Leben und unserem
teils überblendeten natürlichen Umfeld.

In Turner Prize Nominee Kerbel’s Installation Full Moon Hagen, the street lamps
of Hagen collectively act as the part of the
moon which is hidden – reflecting what
cannot be seen, and drawing our attention
to the tenuous relationship between urban
life and the natural world.

Der Asphaltboden in der Unterführung
Funke- / Neumarkstraße wird wird mit
einem an die 1970er Jahre erinnernden
Disco-Dancefloor ausgestattet. Die
Installation Shy Dance Floor fürchtet
sich vor dem Besucher: Nähert man
sich dem Tanzboden, verschwinden
die Lichteffekte wie eine Fata Morgana,
fast, als hätte man sie sich von Weitem
eingebildet. Entfernt sich der Besucher
wieder, erwachen die Lichter erneut
zum Leben.
A dance-floor that only exists when no-one
is there – In the shadows of a pedestrian
under-pass, the approaching viewer sees
a set of under-floor lights twinkling in the
darkness. As they draw nearer, the viewer
discovers a 70’s under-lit dance-floor pulsing silently to an unheard rhythm. Just
as the viewer is about to enter the tunnel
though, the lights vanish.
All that is left behind is normal looking
tiled walkway and a drab inert floor. If the
viewer stays very still though, the apparition returns – bathing them in a warm
pulsating glow from bygone era.

Die an zwei Brückenpfeilern in Rand
lage aufgesprühten Signaturen-Graffitis
( sogenannte Tags ) werden bei Untitled
mit Neonröhren in Form und Farbe exakt nachgezeichnet. Dadurch bekommt
das, was eigentlich zu den verbotenen, ja
vandalistischen, unbeliebten Stadtverzierungen zählt, eine temporäre Feier
lichkeit und künstlerische Betonung.

Using random graffiti tags from two concrete bridge pillars situated in the outskirts
of the town, the Danish artists create an
exact copy of the complex mural with neon
light. Each sprayed colour is done in a
similar neontube colour and placed on
top of the existing sentence, sign or figure
resulting in a light collage celebrating and
emphasizing the vandalistic statements
made by unknown offenders.

Der japanische Künstler Taturo Atzu
( aka Tatzu Nishi ) ist für seine dramatischen Inszenierungen bekannt, bei
denen er Kirchturmspitzen, Brunnen
oder Monumente begehbar macht, die
so auf gänzlich neue Weise erlebbar
werden. In Hagen rückt er mit seiner
Arbeit »Balkon« die Kugellampen eines
Sternstrahlers aus den 1960er-Jahren in
den Fokus: Das Publikum kann während des Festivalzeitraums über einen
Gerüstturm bis nach oben steigen und
dadurch die funktionale, oft übersehene
Ästhetik des Bauwerks aus allernächster
Nähe sehen!
The Japanese artist Taturo Atzu ( aka Tatzu
Nishi ) is, among other things, known
for his dramatic stagings in which he
remodels church steeples, fountains, and
monuments to make them accessible to
viewers who can then experience them in
a new way. In Hagen, he focuses attention
on the sphere lamps of a 1960s lantern by
guiding visitors up a scaffolding to show
them a frequently overlooked aesthetics
of function.

Wieviel wir in der täglichen Kommunikation mit Smartphones über uns
preisgeben, und welche Datenflut dabei
produziert wird, machen Mark Shepard,
Moritz Stephaner und Julian Oliver mit
ihrem Projekt False Positive deutlich.
Über einen Sender im Festivalzentrum
schicken sie Nachrichten auf die Mobiltelefone der Besucher und informieren
sie über die erzeugten Datenmengen,
ihre Risiken und individuellen Möglichkeiten zum Schutz vor unbefugtem
Zugriff.
False Positive is an urban intervention
and workshop that aims to catalyze public
debate surrounding the infrastructural
politics underlying mobile communications systems and the surreptitious network practices of contemporary informatics regimes. The project focuses on
exposing people to the subtle processes by
which their personal data can be collected
via wireless network infrastructures and
generating »data-portraits«of them based
on social and spatial associations inferred
from this data.

Wearable Facade ist ein speziell entworfenes Kleidungsstück, welches über
Sensoren die Farben der Umgebung
aufnimmt und diese auf seine mit leds
ausgestattete Oberfläche überträgt. Der
Künstler selbst wird mit dieser Jacke
durch die Hagener Straßen laufen und
dabei die Farben der Stadt einfangen.
Zeitgleich werden diese Eindrücke auf
eine Fassade am Bunker projiziert.
Wearable Facade is a performance based
on a garment that captures the colours of
its surrounding and translates them into
patterns on its surface. The artist will be
wearing the smart garment while strolling
through the streets of Hagen. Resulting
impressions change patterns every 10 seconds while capturing new information
from the environment. The result is displayed on the garment itself and at the
same time projected on the façade.

Unter der Leitung von Prof. Oliver
Langbein ( FH Dortmund ) realisiert
eine Gruppe Studierender des Fachbereichs Szenografie drei stationäre und
eine mobile Camera Obscura, die jeweils
begehbar sind und von den Besuchern
unter Anleitung benutzt werden können.
Eine weitere, kleinere Camera Obscura
wird ebenfalls mobil im Stadtraum ein
gesetzt. Im Festivalzentrum werden die
auf den Kopf gestellten Momantaufnahmen präsentiert.

TATURO ATZU ( TATZU NISHI )
SIMON FAITHFULL
Der japanische Künstler Taturo Atzu
aka Tatzu Nishi ) ist ein international
ausstellender Installations-Künstler.
Er ist bekannt für das Transformieren von
historischen Denkmälern oder Gebäuden,
die er auf neue Weise begehbar und erlebbar
macht. Atzu verwendet hierbei oft für
jeweilige Projekte unterschiedliche Namen,
wie zum Beispiel Tatzu Oozu, Tazro Niscino,
Tatsurou Bash oder auch Taturo Atzu.
Simon Faithfull ist ein zeitgenössischer
Künstler, der weltweit bereits umfangreich
ausgestellt hat. Seine Arbeiten wurden als
Versuch beschrieben, den Planeten als
skulpturales Objekt zu verstehen und zu
erforschen und somit Grenzen auszuloten. In
seinen neueren Projekten unternahm er eine
Reise durch Afrika entlang des Greenwhich
Meridians oder ließ zur Erschaffung eines
künstlichen Riffs absichtlich ein Schiff
versenken.
( Atzu mainly does large-scale public
installations in which he transforms familiar
public architecture, such as city monument
or streetlights, into intimate objects by
surrounding them with a private space, like a
living room or a hotel room. His recent works
are So I only want to love yours in Manifesta 10
( 2014 ), Discovering Columbus in which he built
a living room surrounding the Columbus statue
located in Manhattan ( New York, 2012 ) and
one of Hotel projects, The Merlion Hotel for the
Singapore Biennial ( 2011 ).
Simon Faithfull is a contemporary artist whose
work has been exhibited extensively around
the world. His work has been described as an
attempt to understand and explore the planet
as a sculptural object – to test its limits and
report back from its extremities. Recent projects
include a journey across Africa tracing the
Greenwich Meridian and the deliberate sinking
of a ship to create an artificial reef.

Künstlern Christopher Robbins,
John Ewing und Matey Odonkor gegründet.
Alle drei habenvorher für internationale
Hilfsorganisationen gearbeitet und dabei
erfahren, wie kontraproduktiv es sich
auswirkt, wenn in einem soziokulturell völlig
anderen Land ›Lösungen‹ für sogenannte
Enwicklungsländer erfunden werden.
In ihren Projekten drehen sie den Spieß
um und machen für die Industrieländer
erlebbar, wie es sich anfühlt, solche
›Verbesserungsmethoden‹ übergestülpt zu
bekommen.
A Kassen sind Christian Bretton-Meyer,
Morten Steen Hebsgaard, Søren Petersen und
Tommy Petersen. Zentraler Ausgangspunkt
ihrer Arbeiten ist die Verbindung von der
Umgebung, in der das Werk entsteht, als
auch der Ort, an dem es ausgestellt wird.
Den dritten Bezugspunkt bildet der jeweilige
Betrachter. Der entstehende Dialog macht den
integralen Bestandteil ihrer Arbeiten aus.
The Ghana ThinkTank was founded in 2006 by
Christopher Robbins, John Ewing, and Matey
Odonkor. Carmen Montoya joined in 2009.
Their Projects include a think tank process
across the US / Mexico border, in which
deported Immigrants solve the problems of US
civilian border patrols like the Minutemen,
and a project in Detroit, in which a communal
Moroccan Riad is transposed between
abandoned homes.
A Kassen are Christian Bretton-Meyer, Morten
Steen Hebsgaard, Søren Petersen and Tommy
Petersen. Central to their approach is the idea
of linking the work both to its environment, as
well as those who view it. Seeing both the viewer
and the situation in which the work was made
and exhibited. Integral to the work is about the
creation of a dialogue.

Janice Kerbel beschäftigt sich kontinuierlich
mit »Strategien der Verschleierung«
und verwendet hierfür unterschiedliche
Materialien – etwa Text, Zeichnungen,
Licht und Klang. Der Ausgangspunkt
ihrer konzeptionellen Arbeitenund
Forschungen ist das methodische
Anwenden und Hinterfragen bestehender
Systeme und Logiken sowie das Aufdecken
der Beziehungen zwischen Realität,
Vorstellungsbildern und Illusionen.
Ricardo O’Nascimento ist ein Künstler
und Forscher im Bereich neuer Medien
und interaktiver Kunst. Er untersucht die
körperliche Umgebung mithilfe interaktiver
Installationen, gefundener, gebrauchter
Geräte oder hybrider Installationen.
Er ist Gründer von popkalab –
einem Design- / Forschungsstudio,
das sich mit Technologien des Tragbaren
auseinander setzt.
Janice Kerbel deals consistently with »strategies
of deception« inventing forms that promise
subsequent states through the use of text,
drawings, and most recently sound. Her
conceptual plans or studies are generated out
of the rigorous application and interrogation
of existing systems or logics, and explore the
relationship between reality, imagined ideals,
and illusions.
Ricardo O’Nascimento is an artist and
researcher in the field of new media and
interactive art. He investigates body
environment relations focused on interface
development for worn devices, interactive
installations and hybrid installations.
He is the founder of popkalab - a
design / research studio focused on innovation
in the field of wearable technology.

Die Künstlerin Andrea Polli arbeitet an der
Schnittstelle zwischen Kunst, Wissenschaft
und Technologie. Ihre künstlerische Praxis
umfasst Medieninstallationen, öffentliche
Interventionen, Regie, kuratorische Tätig
keiten und Gemeinschaftsprojekte.
In ihrer Forschung und künstlerischen Praxis
experimentiert sie mit interaktiven, mobilen,
künstlerischen und digitalen Medien.
In ihren Performances und visuellen
Arbeiten erforscht Rispoli konzeptuelle
und ästhetische Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten
zwischen öffentlichem und privatem Raum.
Sie initiierte die Künstlergruppe ZimmerFrei
mit Anna de Manincor und Massimo
Carozzi. ZimmerFrei erforscht reale und
imaginäre Umwelten, in denen das Mentale
und das Physische eine kohärente Erzählung
menschlicher Erfahrung bilden.
Andrea Polli is an artist working at the

BLAKE SHAW
Sans façon entstand in einer gemeinsamen
Unternehmung zwischen dem französischen
Architekten Charles Blanc und dem
britischen Künstler Tristan Surtees und
entwickelte sich über ihre künstlerische Praxis
zu einer nachhaltigen Zusammenarbeit.
Das Duo entwickelte temporäre wie
dauerhafte Projekte, die sich vornehmlich
mit der Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Ort
befassen.
Blake Shaw arbeitet als Medienkünstler an
der Schnittstelle zwischen Video, öffentlichem
Raum und Telekommunikationstechnologie.
Er ist vor allem durch seine Arbeiten unter
dem Pseudonym »Sweatshoppe« mit Bruno
Levy bekannt. Seit Ende 2012 beschäftigte er
sich hauptsächlich mit der Entwicklung von
The Bridge Project in Palästina. Aktuell lebt
und arbeitet er in Berlin, wo er das Atelier
Alter Projects betreibt.
