A MESSAGE FROM YOUR LV PRESIDENT
Annetta Cheek
after a tornado destroyed his home in Texas. It’s gratifying
to know that so many of you are prepared to help other
DVG members in times of need.
We are getting a lot of questions about membership levels
and dues. Remember that they were updated in 2015, and
the current dues structure is on the website in the membersonly section. If you have any questions, please ask the
National Membership Officer at
[email protected].
Also, please remember that everyone can now order their
scorebooks directly from Germany. Please do not order
your scorebooks from the LV. If you have an old form on
your hard drive – delete it. Look on the website for the new
information. Scorebooks will still be sent to members
through their club president.
The AWDF championship is coming up. To enter as a DVG
member, . .
In other news, we are moving to create a DVG Foundation,
a 501(c)(3) organization. LV DVG America is a 501(c)(7)
organization – classified by IRS as a social and recreational
club. Social and recreational clubs are non-profit and tax
exempt, but if you make a donation to one you do not get a
tax deduction for your donation. 501(c)(3) organizations are
also non-profit and tax exempt, if you donate to one you do
get a tax deduction. We hope to use the DVG Foundation to
raise some funds to support educational programs for our
members and, in some cases, for the public. I’ll keep you
posted on how the project goes – there’s a lot of IRS paper
work to fill out.
We are in the middle of election season; your club
president should have just contacted you about your votes
for this year. New officers will take office on March 1.
Several members will be leaving the Board. I want to
express my appreciation to all of them for their often
thankless service to the LV.
Carole Patterson will be leaving the Board after many years
as President, and one last term as Vice President. I’m sure
all of you know Carole and have appreciated her help over
the years she’s presided over the organization. This really
is a big change for the LV, and the end of an era.
Deb DeFrank has also served many years as Secretary of
the LV, as well as Secretary of her KG. LV Secretary is
tough job, going way beyond what one normally thinks of
as secretarial duties. And Deb was always willing to step up
and do an extra task when needed.
Anne Conroy has not served that long as Treasurer, but
she’s make a big impact on the organization, presiding over
incorporating the on-line database into the way we do
business, especially how we renew members. These
changes will continue to have an impact on the LV for many
years.
Roberta Haskell had perhaps the most thankless task,
presiding over our smallest KG. KGN is so small it’s difficult
to find volunteers to take on critical tasks, and I know that
there were many occasions when she just buckled down
and did it herself. With her departure on January 1 we
welcomed Butch Henderson to the Board as the new
president of KG North.
You might consider writing to these departing Board
members (their emails are still on the webpage) and
expressing your thanks for their service.
I’d like to express my gratitude to the many members who
responded positively to the request to help Billy Ray Purdy
Have a great year, and best of luck training and trialing.

temps, perfect for the dogs and their handlers.
Before the main event on Saturday and

successful, and earned the right to pursue their

followed that with a 85 in protection and an
impressive 98 in tracking on Sunday to claim the
IPO 1 title along with overall high score in the trial.
Congrats Oscar and Bodo on an outstanding trial
debut. After the 1s and 2 s, the IPO 3 competitors
took the field for OB. Kay Lewis and her Doberman
Pyro led all scorers with an 87, with Melissa Hepler
and her dog Cino, along with Karen Grier and Uma
scoring 83 points each. After a short break, the
protection phase began. Front half was handled by
helper Curtis Brantley, while the back half was the
responsibility of Mike Lorraine. There were several
outstanding performances turned in, led by Kay and
her Doberman Pyro who impressed all with his
solid and near flawless routine to score 100.
Melissa and her fast and hard hitting dog Cino also
impressed with a 96, and who can forget Mike
O’Donnell and his malinois Raising Kane, who
made a thunderous hit on Curtis Brantly in the
escape bite, then charged down the field on the
courage test, where Mike Lorraine made a
spectacular catch and left the field with a 95. After
protection most competitors headed out as tracking
was scheduled for early Sunday morning.
The tracking portion consisted of dirt at a local sod
farm in Melbourne, many thanks to the Kempfer
family for allowing the use of their property, and to
Curtis Brantly who worked to obtain the site.
Melissa and Cino led all the IPO 3 championship
competitors with an 87 which led to her being
crowned the SEKG regional champion for 2015.

Did You Know?
The “JOYS” of Traveling
By Jacki Purdham, DVG America Judge
DVG judges are available to judge
trials for any AWDF-member breed
club.
DVG judges are all-breed judges,
understanding the different
characteristics of each breed and
evaluating their
performance
objectively. Once a
year the DVG
America judges
meet and have a
formal, two-day
workshop to discuss
new rules and their
interpretation. All
our Judges are
active in the sport;
working dogs and
competing.
We have high standards for
selecting judges.
Once they meet all the experience
qualifications DVG
judges must go
through a very
extensive
apprentice
program. They
must apprentice at
a minimum of five
trials under several
different
experienced judges
They must write an
extensive report on
each trial, which
goes to the judge, then to the head
DVG America judge and then to the
head judge in Germany, assuring
oversight
They must pass a final written and
practical exam
administered by the
head judge from
Germany.
For more about
our judges
program, please

Hope everyone has had a wonderful holiday season. I wanted to share with all of you a
story about one of my travels. If you ever have the pleasure of traveling with me,
RUN!!!
I’m cursed when it comes to traveling!
So here it goes…….
I was asked to judge a trial for High Drive Working Dog (AWMA) 21-22 Nov. 2015 with
Waine Singleton as an apprentice. This would be Waine’s last trial before completing
his apprenticeship.
On 21 Nov. I started out on this journey.
My flight was scheduled to leave at 5:50 am out of Omaha which
takes me about 1 ½ hour to get to door to door. Mind you, I work
nights, so I had just about enough time to go home after work, pack,
and head out.
My 1st flight out of Omaha was delayed for 2 reasons. 1-for weather,
and 2-, the tug used to back the airplane up, was stuck to the
airplane.
So, 1st flight out, delayed flying into good ol Chicago O’Hare!
Due to this delay, I missed my connecting flight into Detroit. At this
point, there is weather settling in.
Keep in mind, the trial is supposed to start 1-2 pm.
The airline puts me on the next flight out, so I still could make this
schedule work.
NOPE!! This flight is now delayed due to weather. It’s delayed 3 times in 45 minute
increments until it is finally cancelled completely, and then, the Chicago airport is
totally shut down!!
So, now I’m off to try and find a hotel and explaining to the club that I will not make it
but they did get me on the 1st flight out in the morning.
In the meantime, Chicago gets 16 inches of snow and Detroit is now getting hammered
with weather.
We can still make this work right? RIGHT!!!
I call Waine and inform him on my delays, but tell him that I will
text him when I take off in the am and if he gets all the tracks in and
has the 1st dog waiting for me, we can get this done. This will
happen, it’s just going to take some coordinating.
Now, my am flight out is delayed due to weather again! OH NO!!!!
This time for only a short 1 ½ hour delay. Finally, I make it to
Detroit.
They pick me up and we drive (fly) to the tracking fields which are 2
hours away on roads that are, well let’s just say, questionable!!
Waine does an amazing job and has all the tracks in and totally
organized when I arrive to start. We run all the tracks in 6-10 inches
of snow!
Did I say this is crazy yet??
We finish tracking and head straight to the club field, No Breaks!!
Oh, I forgot to tell you that their club house burnt down the night before too L
We get to the club field, and they had to have a tractor plow around the outside of the
field and up the middle so that you could walk due to the snow being so deep. Then
they got hand shovels out to make a hole for the dogs to do a long down in.
Yes, I think I’ve said this is the craziest trial ever!!
Finally, done with obedience and I gave everyone a 5 minute break
before starting protection. We were limited on light, (no lights on
the field) and I have to be on the road by 5:30pm to make my flight
home.
The 5 minute break was really only so I could find my hand and foot
warmers due to I could not feel my fingers anymore!
So we finished protection at 5:00 which left me with 30 minutes to
do all the paperwork and sign the books. Angie traveled with Waine
thankfully, and she had all the paperwork ready to go for us! I
checked all my numbers, signed the books, thanked everyone and off
on the next road trip to the airport for my journey home.
Low and behold, my flight leaving Detroit was delayed for more
weather. OMG!! Finally made it to Chicago, but missed my
connection flight again and now there is no flight until next morning.
By this time it is late, and I’m on the 1st flight out in the morning, so
it made no sense to get a hotel room for just a few hours, so yes, I

out in the airport with all the other wonderful happy people that were also stranded there.
Ok, so now I’m on the 1st flight out on my last flight, and now it’s delayed.
Really, I promise, I’m not making this stuff up!!
It was only delayed for an hour and I finally make it back to Omaha, and make my 1 ½ drive home.
This was all done on 6 hours of sleep!
All and all, I had every reason to cancel this trial, but NO!!! All the club members were willing to give it their all, and I know how incredibly
important it was for Waine to get his apprenticeship over with and become the judge that he so deserves to be!
I gave it my all, the club gave it their all, Waine did one hell of a job, Angie saved us with organizing the paperwork, and we GOT IT DONE!!.

guests.
The tracking was held a fairly close distance from the facility, which made travel from one venue to the other very convenient. The tracking
conditions were on hay grass, and a tough spring made condtions very difficult. Only two “V” rated scores were achieved, and these were by our
top two finishers, Michael Lorraine (96) and Sandra Rushing (97).
The venue for the obedience and protection phases was the Showplace arena. The covered arena was just spectacular offering some shade from
the unusually warm November weather.
Sandra Rushing and her malinois Kcharge ot Vitosha and Joanne Fleming and her Bouvier Briarlea Solamente en la Luz took high obedience honors
with fantastic obedience routiness scoring 96 points each. In protection, Michael Lorraine and his malinois, Graubaers Bruiser shined with a
tremendous score of 98, capturing the over all first place and high in trial trophies, with scores of 96-94-98 (288). Second place went to Sandra
Rushing 97-96-92 (285), placing third were Steve Clark and his Malinois Yargo ot Vitosha 86-91-88, and fourth place belonged to Joanne Fleming
with scores of 91-96-78.
Once again thanks to all of the competitors and to everyone that attended making this a tremendous success.
Editor’s Note: While every effort was made to have photos of all the competitors included in this issue,
circumstances beyond my control made that impossible. The addiitonal photos of competitors that will be
provided by the event photographer, will be published in the next issue of the magazine. Thanks for understanding.
