Dezember, 20 Uhr ONO Das Kulturlokal - Kramgasse 6 - 3011 Bern Tuesday, December 1st, 8 pm ONO Das Kulturlokal - Kramgasse 6 - 3011 Bern Auch lange Jahre nach ihrer Flucht ist Burma für Wendy Law-Yone Thema und literarische Herausforderung geblieben: in „The Coffin Tree“ als Erinnerungen einer Jugendlichen im amerikanischen Exil, und in „Irrawaddy Tango“ als fiktives Land Daya. In „Road of Wanting“, im Burma von heute angesiedelt, begibt sich eine junge Frau, geprägt von einem Leben voller Enttäuschung und Gewalt, auf der Strasse zurück ins Dorf im Norden. Mit der erstmaligen Rückkehr nach Burma 2001 wurde es für Wendy Law-Yone möglich, nicht nur Fiktion, sondern auch Tatsachen zu schreiben: In „Golden Parasol: A Daughter’s Memoir of Burma“ folgt sie dem Leben ihres Vaters, der als Oppositioneller nach fünf Jahren im Gefängnis ins Exil ging. Law-Yone ist eine hellsichtige, einzigartige Stimme, die Geschichte und Gegenwart in einer klaren, fast klassischen Sprache in Worte fasst. Zurzeit ist sie Friedrich Dürrenmatt Gastprofessorin für Weltliteratur an der Uni Bern, wo sie sich der Literatur Südostasiens widmet. An der Lesung im ONO steht ihr eigenes Schreiben im Zentrum. Many years after fleeing the country, Wendy Law-Yone continues to focus on Burma as a central and challenging topic of her literary work: for the protagonist of The Coffin Tree, exiled to the US, Burma exists as a memory; in Irrawaddy Tango it features as the fictitious country of Daya. In The Road to Wanting, set in contemporary Burma, a young woman whose life has been shaped by disappointment and violence sets off on the road back to her native village in the north of the country. In 2001, Wendy Law-Yone was herself enabled to return to Burma for the first time, and it became possible for her to turn from fiction to fact: in Golden Parasol: A Daughter’s Memoir of Burma, she charts the life of her father, a member of the opposition who went into exile after five years of imprisonment. Law-Yone is a clear, unique literary voice who verbalises the past and the present in distinct, almost classic, prose. Currently, she holds the Friedrich Dürrenmatt Guest Professorship for World Literature at the University of Bern, where she focuses on the literatures of South East Asia.
