The Berlin-based and international artists participating in WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE
create spatial fictions that address our idea of the “good” life. The works originate
from the phantasm of the jungle, which we set against our standardized way of life as
a place of pristine rampancy. From various perspectives, the participating artists relate
themselves to the human wishful fantasies and fears linked to concrete or imaginary
spaces – and find images and forms of their own for the gaping chasms and the
productivity they find there.
The works make use of the motif of the jungle as a spatial utopia that does not
require a concrete place – such as the tropics – but can be established anywhere in
the world; whether in global capitals, the desert, the German provinces – or indeed
fictionally. So, through visions of the “other,” the works shed light ex negativo on our
ideas and self-perception.
Curator and writer Filipa Ramos enters into conversation with the exhibition with two
film events accompanying it: The screening of Phillip Warnell’s MING OF HARLEM:
TWENTY ONE STOREYS IN THE AIR (2014) on September 30, 2015, will be followed by
an artist talk; for October 28, 2015, Ramos has compiled a film program that focuses
on utopias and dystopias.
