fantastic artist, Ingo Robin.
A name, long established in the
photographic world with his exceptional take on the world he sees
through his camera.

einen fantastischen Künstler vorstellen zu dürfen: Ingo Robin.
Ingo Robin has been surrounded
with a diverse cultural heritage and
experienced life in many countries
around the world. His art is like his
life, and is rich with many layers,
which add a deep complexity to his
artwork; full of diverse experiences,
influences and contrasting aesthetics. It is my great pleasure to present to you his “selected works” in
the catalogue. May the photos give
you a breath of what is Ingo Robins
beautiful, unique and individual
photography.
Ein in der Welt der Fotografie schon
lange etablierter Name – der Name
eines Manns mit einer außergewöhnlichen Sicht auf die Welt.
Aber vielleicht ist es ja auch das erste Mal, dass Sie seine wunderbaren
Arbeiten sehen, die für diese Ausstellung ausgewählt wurden, um
seine Fähigkeiten und seine Vielfältigkeit zu zeigen.
Ingo Robin war stets von großen
kulturellen Diversität umgeben und
sammelte Erfahrungen in vielen
Ländern der Erde. Seine Kunst spiegelt dieses abwechslungsreiche Leben wider und zeichnet sich durch
eine große Vielschichtigkeit, vielfältige Eindrücke, Einflüsse und eine
widersprüchliche Ästhetik aus, die
ihr allesamt ein hohes Maß an Komplexität verleihen. Es ist mir eine
große Ehre, Ihnen seine „ausgewählten Werke“ in diesem Katalog präsentieren zu dürfen. Mögen Ihnen

What are these colours, forms and
shapes that photographer Ingo Robin presents us with in such intensity and force that it is almost blatantly 'visual food'? Which journey
does he want to send us on with his
strangely drafted scenes of figures
against eye-catching backdrops? It is
curious how his almost voyeuristic
gaze intrigues us and how we want
to know more of Ingo Robin's world
which is sometimes poetic, sometimes excessive, sometimes greatly
reduced. It seems as if the photographer creates his work like a sculptor
or painter who fashions something
with his medium, not letting him go
but stimulating him evermore.
Ingo Robin has been a professional
photographer since the early 1990s,
characterised by a passion and professionalism that almost leaps out
at us. At first he worked on advertising campaigns for labels like Nike,
Adidas or Hugo Boss, changing later
to magazines such as Max, Vogue,
SZ Magazin and later yet to Stern
for which he shot fashion pictures
and celebrity portraits.
For his own art Robin loves to orchestrate man and nature. His models are not just glossy advertisement and fashion beauties but also
artistes like the trapeze and high
wire acrobats of the Weisheit family or a group of stilt walkers. He is
interested in the often contrasting,
sometimes absurd combinations of
man and landscape and always intends to catch the special moment in
time – when a small band of clowns
walks with their instrument cases through the snow of the Swiss
mountains or when the red coat of
a man waves flamelike in the wind
on the imposing Devil's Wall in the
German Central Uplands.

equipment too heavy to realise
one of his ideas which he comes up
with long before production. For
hours his photo team has to climb
the rugged rocks of the Norwegian fjords to find just the right spot
for the picture of a yeti – a creature
with specially designed costume
made of shags in garish colours.
There is also the image of a clown
on an oversized buoy in the North
Sea which makes one wonder how
he got there. He leans there with an
ease and joie de vivre as if dancing
in a circus arena and not on slippery steal in the middle of a rough
sea. The image on the book cover,
however – Robin's interpretation of
the iconic band KISS –, plays with
the mechanisms of perception, with
recognition and memory, leaving
room for projections of things heard
and felt.
The artist shows great sensitivity for
moments of history, mythology or
pop culture when interpreting them
anew. He confronts his varied subjects without reservations, embarks
on open interplay with his protagonists and gives us the impetus to
rethink old perspectives and paradigms. He wants to share his enthusiasm with us, he wants the spark to
ignite us too. And he manages this
in different ways – often by an exuberant blaze of colours, sometimes
by intense portraits as well as times
and again by provocation, like in
his newest series called The Masks.
It started during a trip through
the US where he accompanied the
world-famous DJ Jerôme Isma-Ae
with his camera for a documentary,
a trip which was later continued in
Madagascar. Robin puts the masks
of the title, made of plastic and in
garish colours, on people's face he
comes across, creating images which

The pictures talk of fears of an anonymised world, of the global mania
to which the individual falls prey,
but also of peaceful moments when
people without faces but with an
intense gaze stare at the camera, yet
losing themselves in the vastness of
their surroundings.
In Robin's imagery two contrasting
approaches encounter each other:
on the one hand the pictures are
highly effective and iconic, on the
other they are subtle and critical of
society. It is exactly this combination of seemingly incompatible opposites that fascinates and irritates us.
Ingo Robin has found a unique way
of uniting things which do not fit,
allowing us an iridescent appreciation of the world and triggering a
stimulating thought process, while
never once losing his colourful and
glamorous vein.

Was sind das für Farben, Formen
und Gestalten, die uns der Fotograf
Ingo Robin in Intensität und Wucht
fast marktschreierisch als „visuelle
Kost“ darreicht? Auf welche Reise
möchte er uns schicken mit seinen
auf eigenwillige Art entworfenen
Szenen von Figuren vor plakativen
Hintergründen? Es ist erstaunlich,
wie neugierig dieser fast voyeuristische Blick macht, auf eine Welt, die
Ingo Robin mal poetisch, mal verschwenderisch, mal ganz reduziert
entwirft. Man kann den Eindruck
gewinnen, der Fotograf kreiere seine Arbeiten gleich einem Bildhauer
oder Maler, der Kraft seines Mediums ein Werk erschafft, das ihn
nicht mehr loslässt, ihn nimmermüde suchend antreibt.
Ingo Robin fotografiert beruflich
seit den frühen neunziger Jahren
und hat das von Anfang an mit einer Leidenschaft und Professionalität getan, die uns aus seinen Bildern
geradezu entgegenspringt. Waren
es anfangs Werbeaufträge für Labels wie Nike, Adidas oder Hugo
Boss, wechselte er bald zu Zeitschriften wie Max, Vogue, dem SZ
Magazin und später zum Stern, für
die er Modestrecken und Celebrities
ablichtete.
Für seine eigene Kunst liebt der Fotograf die Inszenierung von Mensch
und Natur. Seine Models sind nicht
nur glatte Schönheiten aus Werbung und Mode, sondern auch Artisten, wie beispielweise die Trapezund Hochseil-Künstler der Familie
Weisheit oder eine Gruppe Stelzenläufer. Was ihn interessiert, sind
die oft kontrastreichen, bisweilen
auch absurden Kombinationen von
Mensch und Landschaft; dabei will
er immer den besonderen Moment
einfangen. So stampft eine kleine
Gruppe Clowns mit Instrumen-

tenkoffern durch den Schnee der
Schweizer Berge oder es weht der
rote Mantel eines Mannes – einer
Flamme gleich – im Wind auf der
imposanten Teufelsmauer im Deutschen Mittelgebirge.
Keine Weg ist zu weit und kein
Foto-Equipment zu schwer, um eines seiner Motive umzusetzen, die
lange vor der Produktion in seinem
Kopf entstehen. Stundenlang muss
ein Fototeam die schroffen Felsen
der Norwegischen Fjorde erklimmen, um die richtige Stelle für das
Bild eines Yetis zu finden – ein Wesen mit einem eigens entworfenen
Kostüm aus knallbunten Zotteln. Es
gibt auch das Motiv eines Clowns
auf einer überdimensional großen
Boje in der Nordsee und man fragt
sich, wie der wohl raufgeklettert ist.
Er lehnt dort mit einer Leichtigkeit
und Lebensfreude, als tanze er in
einer Manege und nicht bei hohem
Seegang auf glattem Stahl. Das Bild
des Buchcovers hingegen, Robins
Interpretation der Bandikone KISS,
spielt mit Wahrnehmungsmechanismen von Erkennen und Erinnern
und lässt viel Platz für Projektionen
von Gehörtem oder Gefühltem.
Der Künstler hat ein großes Gespür
dafür, Momente der Geschichte, der
Mythologie oder der Popkultur aufzugreifen und neu zu interpretieren. Er begegnet seinen vielfältigen
Themen ohne Vorbehalte, lässt sich
auf ein offenes Spiel mit den Protagonisten ein und gibt uns immer
wieder den Impuls, Perspektiven
und Paradigmen neu zu überdenken. Dabei ist es ihm wichtig, den
eigenen Enthusiasmus auf den Betrachter seiner Bilder zu übertragen. Er will, dass der Funke überspringt. Und das gelingt ihm auf
unterschiedliche Weise: Oft durch
eine überbordende Farbenpracht,
manchmal in intensiven Porträts
und immer wieder mit Provokationen, wie bei seiner jüngsten Fotostrecke „The Masks“. Die Serie fand
ihren Beginn bei einer Reise durch
die USA, bei der er den weltweit
bekannten DJ Jerôme Isma-Ae mit
der Kamera für eine Filmdokumentation begleitete, fortgeführt wurde
die Bildstrecke auf Madagaskar. Die
Masken, aus Plastik und in schrillen Farben, setzt er den Menschen
auf, die ihm spontan begegnen und
realisiert so Bilder, die die verschiedensten Assoziationen auslösen: Sie
erzählen einerseits von der Angst
vor einer anonymisierten Welt,
dem globalen Wahn, dem das Individuum namenlos zum Opfer fällt,
aber auch von stillen Momenten,
in denen Menschen ohne Gesicht
und doch mit intensivem Blick in
die Linse starren und sich gleichzeitig in den Weiten der Umgebung zu
verlieren scheinen.
So treffen zwei konträre Ansätze
in der Bildsprache des Fotografen
aufeinander – die eine werbewirksam und ikonografisch, die andere verletzlich und sozialkritisch.
Und genau diese Kombination von
scheinbar unvereinbaren Gegensätzen zieht uns in den Bann zwischen
Faszination und Irritation. Ingo Robin hat einen außergewöhnlichen
Weg gefunden, Dinge zu vereinen,
die nicht zusammenpassen um uns
so in eine oszillierende Wahrnehmung zu schicken, die nachhaltig
zum Denken anregt. Und das tut er
niemals ohne seine glamouröse und
farbenfrohe Ader zu verlieren.
