Hallo,
bevor die Weihnachtsferien beginnen, möchten wir schon einmal unser Programm für Januar
bekannt geben! Es wird wieder eine Reihe von interessanten Veranstaltungen geben, an denen ihr
herzlich eingeladen seid teilzunehmen!
Wir wünschen Euch allen ein frohes Weihnachtsfest und freuen uns Euch im Neuen Jahr
wiederzusehen!

Wichtige Hinweise
1. Das Büro des International Office wird von Weihnachten bis Neujahr (24. Dezember 2015
bis 03. Januar 2016 einschließlich) geschlossen bleiben, in den Tagen vor Weihnachten
(21-23. Dezember 2015) sind v.a. vormittags besetzt. Christina Timpernagel ist
voraussichtlich vom 19. Dezember bis einschließlich 06. Januar nicht im Büro. Bitte
versucht möglichst wichtige Angelegenheiten bis zum 18. Dezember 2015 zu klären. Das
Team von Junior Year und Austauschprogramm ist im neuen Jahr ab dem 4. Januar 2016
wieder für euch da!
2. Vom 24. Dezember 2015 bis zum 6. Januar 2016 sind an der Universität Bonn
Weihnachtsferien. In diesem Zeitraum finden keine Universitätskurse und keine Kurse
des International Office statt.
3. Bitte beachtet: Die Kurse des International Office enden bereits am 22.12. abends. Einige
Universitäts-Kurse finden jedoch auch noch am 23.12. statt – bitte fragt Eure Dozenten!
4. Die letzte Kaffeestunde wird in diesem Jahr am 16. Dezember 2015 und die erste im
neuen Jahr am 13. Januar 2016 stattfinden.
5. Bitte beachtet: Während der Feiertage haben Behörden, Betriebe, Geschäfte und
Supermärkte aber auch viele Restaurants geschlossen! Dies betrifft Heiligabend (24.12.
nachmittags), die Weihnachtstage (25. und 26.12.), Silvester (31.12. nachmittags) und den
1. Januar 2016.
6. Die Vorlesungszeit des Wintersemesters 15/16 endet am 12. Februar 2016. Die
Vorlesungszeit des Sommersemesters 2016 beginnt wieder am 11. April 2016.
7. Wenn Ihr nur für das Wintersemester in Bonn bleibt, endet das Junior Year Program und
das Direktaustauschprogramm am 29.02.2016. Ihr werdet dann automatisch
exmatrikuliert und müsst spätestens bis zum 29.02. aus dem Wohnheim ausziehen. Auch
die Krankenversicherung läuft Ende Februar aus. Wenn Ihr privat länger in Deutschland
bleiben wollt, müsst Ihr Euch darum selbstständig kümmern (VISA, Wohnen,
Krankenversicherung) – bitte informiert Sharon Williams jedoch über Eure Pläne. Im
Semesterheft auf Seite 12 stehen weitere Informationen dazu.
Dienstag, 12. Januar: Besuch der deutschen Welle
„Hier ist die deutsche Welle Bonn“ – diese akustische Kennung geht aus der Bundesstadt Bonn
rund um die Welt. Hier entstehen die vielsprachigen Programme von DW-RADIO: Von Amharisch
bis Urdu, von Bengali bis Ukrainisch und natürlich in Deutsch und Englisch, Russisch und Chinesisch.
Die Deutsche Welle ist der staatliche Auslandsrundfunk der Bundesrepublik und setzt auf
modernste digitale Technik bei Produktion und Übertragung – und insbesondere auf ein
multinationales Team von rund 1.500 Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern aus mehr als 60 Ländern.
Für die DW ist interkultureller Dialog Alltag und Programm.

GANZ WICHTIG: Denkt unbedingt daran, dass Ihr Euch nur anmeldet, wenn Ihr definitiv wisst,
dass Ihr an diesem Tag könnt. Also bitte überlegt Euch vorher, ob Ihr zu diesem Zeitpunkt
eigentlich eine Veranstaltung in der Uni habt usw. Dies ist in diesem Fall besonders wichtig, da
wir eine Strafgebühr in Höhe von 100 Euro bezahlen müssen, wenn weniger Leute kommen, als
wir angemeldet haben!
Donnerstag, 21. Januar: Länderabend USA – Kanada
Wir laden Euch herzlich zum Länderabend „USA-Kanada“ ein. Helft deutschen Studierenden, die in
die USA oder nach Kanada gehen werden, sich auf Ihren Aufenthalt vorzubereiten.
Wir möchten ebenfalls eine kulinarische Reise in die Heimat unserer kanadischen und
amerikanischen Gaststudierenden machen: Wir bitten Euch, diese landestypischen Gerichte oder
Fingerfood vorzubereiten und den Abend gemeinsam mit uns zu gestalten.
Infos für die amerikanischen und kanadischen Studierenden, die etwas zur Gestaltung des Abends
beitragen möchten, gibt es in der Kaffeestunde und per E-Mail von Jan Veit. Der Länderabend ist
eine gute Möglichkeit für Euch, Punkte für das Zertifikat für Internationale Kompetenz zu sammeln.
Treffpunkt ist um 18.30 Uhr im International Club.

Sonntag, 24. Januar: Bonn Buddy Event: Surprise!
Das Leben steckt voller Überraschungen – so auch das letzte Bonn Buddy Event. Was wir genau an
dem Tag mit Euch vorhaben, bleibt noch geheim. Einige kleine Hinweise schon vorab: das Event
hat diesmal nichts mit Essen zu tun, bietet nach den vielen Weihnachtsfeiern und Festessen in den
Winterferien aber eine gute Möglichkeit, wieder in Form zu kommen. Außerdem solltet Ihr Euch
für dieses Event Sportkleidung einpacken!
Das Event beginnt um 14 Uhr!
Den Treffpunkt und weitere Informationen werden wir Euch früh genug per Email bekannt geben!
Dienstag, 26. Januar: Länderabend Asien
Wir möchten eine kulinarische Reise in die Heimat unserer asiatischen Gaststudierenden machen.
Wir bitten die asiatischen Studierenden Gerichte aus ihren Heimatländern mitzubringen oder im
Club vorzubereiten und diese vorzustellen.
Infos für die asiatischen Studierenden, die etwas zur Gestaltung des Abends beitragen möchten,
gibt es in der Kaffeestunde und per E-Mail. Der Länderabend ist eine gute Möglichkeit für Euch,
Punkte für das Zertifikat für Internationale Kompetenz zu sammeln.
Treffpunkt ist um 18.30 Uhr im International Club.

Vorausschau: Am 12. Februar findet der Abschiedsbrunch statt!
Bevor einige von Euch nach Hause fahren, wollen wir bei einem großen gemeinsamen Brunch den
Abschluss des Semesters feiern. Der Brunch ist außerdem eine gute Gelegenheit, sich von allen zu
verabschieden und Adressen und Fotos auszutauschen. Er findet um 10 Uhr im International Club
statt.

Von Monet bis Renoir: Japans Liebe zum Impressionismus
8.Oktober 2015 bis 21. Februar 2016
Erstmalig in Europa präsentiert die Bundeskunsthalle die bedeutendsten Sammlungen der frühen
Moderne aus Japan. Bisher ist es der Allgemeinheit in der westlichen Welt weitgehend unbekannt,
dass die Gemälde der französischen Moderne auch im fernöstlichen Inselreich gesammelt wurden.
Im Zentrum stehen mehr als 100 hochkarätige Werke der französischen Impressionisten und
Postimpressionisten, u. a. von Monet, Manet, Gauguin, Pissarro, Cézanne, Signac und Bonnard.
Hinzu kommen eindrucksvolle Arbeiten japanischer Maler vor 1920, die sich von den französischen
Künstlern zu Malereien im westlichen Stil anregen ließen und damit die moderne japanische Kunst
begründeten. Die ausgestellten Arbeiten vermitteln anschaulich die wechselseitige Inspiration
zwischen japanischer und französischer Kunst.

Schauspiel im Theater - Werther von Johann Wolfgang Goethe

Ein literarisches Meisterwerk von Johann Wolfgang Goethe wird in Bonn auf die Bühne gebracht.
Die Leiden des jungen Werthers lautet der ursprüngliche Titel des von Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe verfassten Briefromans, in dem der junge Rechtspraktikant Werther bis zu seinem Suizid
über seine unglückliche Liaison zu der mit einem anderen Mann verlobten Lotte berichtet.
Die Handlung des Romans ist insofern autobiografisch, als Goethe hier seine platonische
Beziehung zu der bereits inoffiziell verlobten Charlotte Buff literarisch verarbeitete. Das Motiv für
den tragischen Ausgang dieser Liebe, die Selbsttötung Werthers, lieferte Goethe der Suizid seines
Freundes Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, Gesandtschaftssekretär in Wetzlar.

Sonntag, 10. Januar: Konzert des Bundesjugendorchesters - Neue Musik und
Revolutionsklänge
Wie in jedem Jahr beginnt das Bundesjugendorchester, „Deutschlands jüngstes Spitzenorchester“,
seine Wintertournee mit einem Konzert in der Bundeskunsthalle. Unter der Leitung des
Chefdirigents der Dresdner Philharmonie Michael Sanderling geht das junge Orchester auf
Tournee und versetzt mit bekannten Werken wie „Eroica“ von Ludwig von Beethoven, Mozart,
Hechte und Ullmann sein Publikum in eine Atmosphäre voller Sehnsucht, erinnernd an verblasste
Farben
und
Flächen,
an
vergangene
Schönheit
und
entfernte
Intimität.

Ringvorlesung 2015/2016 - "Die Welt im Wandel: Zukunftsstadt"
Montag 11. Januar 2016
Bei der letzten Vorlesung aus der Vorlesungsreihe des Wintersemesters 2015/16 geht es um das
Thema: „Bonn selbstgemacht. Lokale Praktiken zur Hervorbringung und Gestaltung des urbanen
Raumes“. Das ganze wird von deutschen Fernsehmoderatoren moderiert, die Fachleute laden und
auch das Publikum mit in die Diskussion einbinden. Bei der Ringvorlesung geht es um Folgendes:
Bis zum Jahr 2050 werden rund drei Viertel der Erdbevölkerung in Städten wohnen. Diese rapide
Urbanisierung des Planeten ist für einen Großteil des jährlichen Verbrauchs natürlicher
Ressourcen, der globalen Treibhausgasproduktion und des weltweiten Bruttosozialproduktes
verantwortlich. Die Veranstaltungsreihe "Die Welt im Wandel: Zukunftsstadt" nimmt die mit
diesem Prozess verbundenen Herausforderungen in den Blickpunkt. Die einzelnen Vorträge von
Fachleuten aus verschieden Bereichen beschäftigen sich mit Fragen der Ökologie und
Nachhaltigkeit, dem Umgang mit Energieressourcen, der Infrastruktur, dem Einsatz von digitalen
Technologien und den gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen der Urbanisierung. Ebenfalls im
Mittelpunkt stehen der Dialog über Zukunftsentwürfe und Möglichkeiten des
zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements sowie die Chancen und Risiken urbaner und globaler
Transformationsprozesse.

will be many interesting events that we encourage you to participate in!

Important Information
1. The International Office will be closed from December 24 th, 2015 until January 3rd, 2016.
Please make sure to finish all your business with our office, particularly with Sharon
Williams, before the morning of December 18th. The Junior Year Team and International
Program will be available again starting on January 4th.
2. From December 24th, 2015 until January 6th, 2016 University of Bonn has Christmas
vacation. No classes will be held during this time.
Please note: The International Office courses finish on December 22nd. University courses
may still take place on December 22nd and 23rd – please ask your teachers if you have
classes.
3. Please note that Christina Timpernagel will be unavailable between December 19th and
January 11th 2015.
4. The Coffee Hours will not be held over the break and the first one of the New Year will
take place on January 13th, 2016.
5. Please note that during the Christmas break and New Year’s Holiday’s, many offices,
businesses, shops and grocery stores will be closed. This will be especially true on
Christmas Eve (Dec. 24th), Christmas Day(s) (25th and 26th), New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31st)
and New Year’s Day (Jan. 1st).
6. Classes during the winter semester 15/16 will end on February 12th 2016. Classes for
summer semester 2016 will resume on April 11th 2016.
7. If you are only staying in Bonn for the winter term, the Junior Year Program and the
Direct Exchange Program will end on February 29th, 2016. You will then be automatically
exmatriculated and will have to leave the dorms on February29th at the latest. Please
note that at the conclusion of the program, you will no longer be covered by German
health insurance. If you would like to extend your stay for private reasons, for example
travel, after February 29th, 2016 you need to take care of your VISA requirements, health
insurance, and apartment yourself. You can find more information concerning this issue
on page 12 of the semester program brochure.
Tuesday, January 12th: Deutsche Welle Visit
“Here is the Deutsche Welle Bonn” – this quote is known all around the world. Here, the
multilingual programs of DW-radio are developed: from Amharic to Urdu, Bengali to Ukrainian,
and, of course, German, English, Russian and Chinese. DW-online.de also goes online from here to
other multimedia channels.
The DW uses a very modern digital technique in production and broadcasting, which is supported
by a multinational team of about 1,500 employees from more than 60 countries. For the DW, an
intercultural dialogue is a part of everyday life and their programs.
Meeting point is 2:15 PM at the bus stop at the main station (Platform C4, Linie 611/610),
direction: Heiderhof Pappelweg.
We have already invited you via e-mail to this excursion.
VERY IMPORTANT: Please only sign up if you definitely know that you can participate! Consult
your class schedules, calendars, etc… before you sign up. Attendance is especially important for
this event because we will have to pay a 100€ fine if less students show up than are registered!
Thursday, January 21st: Country Expose: USA – Canada
We cordially invite you to the “Country Expose: USA-Canada”! Help German students going to the
USA or Canada prepare for their study abroad! We also want to further enhance this experience
by undertaking a culinary trip to the USA and Canada with the help of our American and Canadian
students. We request that students prepare a dish or finger food that are typically eaten in the US
or Canada to share with future exchange students.
Those American or Canadian students who would like to contribute something to the event, will
get more information in the Coffee Hours and via email from Jan Veit. If you are doing the
“Certificate of International Competence”, this is a great opportunity to collect credit points!

Sunday, January 24th: Bonn-Buddy Event: Surprise!
Life is full of surprises – as is our last Bonn Buddy event. The exact details of what we will be doing
will remain a secret but we will give you a few clues as to what we have planned;1) This time it
does not have anything to do with eating. 2) This event will offer you a good opportunity to get
back into shape after all of the Christmas festivities and foods. 3) Remember to pack your sports
clothing and shoes!
We will send you further information about the meeting point and time via email.
Tuesday, January 26th: Country Expose: Asia
During this event we would like to take a culinary journey to the homes of our Asian guest
students! We request that students bring foods and/or fingerfoods that they typically eat in their
home countries and present them. There is the option for students to prepare their dishes at the
International Club.
Students from Asian countries who would like to contribute something to the evening will get
more information during the Coffee Hours and via email. If you are doing the “Certificate of
International Competence”, this is a good opportunity to collect credit points!

Japan’s Love for Impressionism – from Monet to Renoir
October 8th 2015 to February 21st 2016
The ‘Bundeskunsthalle’ is hosting the first European presentation of the most important Japanese
collections of early Modernism. Until now, the western world has been largely unaware of the fact
that French Modernist paintings were also collected in the Far Eastern Island kingdom.
Over 100 first-rate works by French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, such as Monet, Manet,
Gauguin, Pissarro, Cézanne, Signac, and Bonnard to name but a few make up the core of the show.
This selection is supplemented by impressive works created by Japanese artists before 1920, who,
inspired by the French artists, developed paintings in the Western style, thus paving the way for
modern Japanese art. Ultimately, this exhibition also helps to shed some light on the relatively
unknown mutual inspiration and admiration shared between Japanese and French art and artists.

Classic Drama - Werther by Johann Wolfgang Goethe
January 8th, 16th, 30th, 2016
One of the masterpieces by Johann Wolfgang Goethe will be presented on the stages of Bonn.
The Sorrows of Young Werther is an epistolary novel of the ‘Sturm und Drang‘ period in German
literature, and influenced the later romantic movement in literature. The young intern, Werther,
tells about his unhappy love affair with Lotte, who is engaged to another man. He continues his
story until he commits suicide at the conclusion of the novel.
This story is in many ways biographical, since Goethe also had a platonic love affair with Charlotte
Buff. Also the tragic conclusion of the love affair and Werthers suicide seems to mimic the life and
death of Goethe’s friend, Karl Wilhelm Jerusalem, the embassy secretary in Wetzlar. Goethe
described the powerful impact the book had on him, stating that even if Werther had been a
brother of his whom he had killed, he could not have been more haunted by his vengeful ghost.

Sunday, January 10th: Concert of the ’National youth orchestra’ – New Music &
Revolutionary Sounds
Like every year, the national youth orchestra, the “youngest top orchestra of Germany” will start
its winter tour with a concert at the “Bundeskunsthalle”. Under the direction of the chief music
director of the Dresden philharmonic orchestra, Michael Sanderling, world famous pieces like
Beethoven’s “Eroica” and various pieces from Mozart, Hechte and Wullmann will fill the hall with a
desire for the forgone colors, spaces, intimacy and beauty of the past.

Lecture Series 2015/2016 - "Die Welt im Wandel: Zukunftsstadt"
Monday, January 11th 2016
At the last lecture of the lecture series of the winter semester 2015/16 people from the media
world and specialists will talk together with the audience about the theme: „Bonn self-made. Local
practices to a product and composition of the urban room”. The lecture series emphasizes the
following theme:
By 2050, three-quarters of the global population will live in cities. The local and global challenges
connected with this development are tremendous. Cities will not only have to face and address
questions of ecology and sustainability, infrastructure, the use of energy resources and
technologies, but participation and social inclusion will also become an increasingly important
topic.
The lecture series “The World Changing: City of the Future” focuses on urban structures and urban
societies as a dynamic unit and observes the interaction of multiple factors from an international
and local perspective. It traces social implications, enables conversations about future scenarios
and new possibilities for social commitment, gives room to discuss the implementation of urban
development and carves out chances and risks of urban transformation processes.
