Eine runde Sache
Als kreisförmige Vorrichtung zur Erleichterung des Transports
meldete der Anwalt John Keogh im Jahr 2001 seine Erfindung
beim Patentamt in Australien an. Es handelte sich um ein
gewöhnliches Rad. Das Rad wurde zwar schon vor fast 6000
Jahren erfunden, aber beim Patentamt hatte man wohl nicht
aufgepasst. Vor etwa 4000 Jahren bekam es Speichen und
wurde damit leichter und lief schneller als die alten Räder aus
zusammengefügten Brettern.
Leonardo da Vinci, einer der größten Visionäre, Maler, Bildhauer und Ingenieure nutzte das
Rad in zahlreichen Erfindungen, genauso wie später Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler, der deutsche
Ingenieur, Konstrukteur und Industrielle. Daimler entwickelte den ersten schnelllaufenden
Benzinmotor und das erste vierrädrige Kraftfahrzeug mit Verbrennungsmotor. Klingende Namen
wie Franz Josef Popp, der österreichische Ingenieur und der erste Generaldirektor von BMW,
der Bayerischen Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (BMW AG) - heute die Muttergesellschaft
der BMW Group brachten die Räder zum rollen. BMW hat sich vor allem seit den 1960er
Jahren als Hersteller hochpreisiger, komfortabel ausgestatteter und gut motorisierter
Reisewagen mit sportlichem Anspruch einen Namen gemacht und zählt zu den so genannten
Premiumherstellern.
Mit den Automobilen haben

A round thing
With a circular transportation facilitation device John
Keogh in 2001 applied for and was granted a patent at
the Australian Patent Office. This device – known to most
of us as wheel – was invented more than 6000 years ago,
but the patent office did not seem to mind. About 4000
years ago spokes were added to the wheel, which made
it lighter and run faster than old wheels just made from
assembled planks.
Leonardo da Vinci, one of world’s greatest visionaries, painters, sculptors and engineers used the wheel in
countless inventions, like later Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler, the German engineer and industrialist. Daimler
developed the first high-speed petrol motor and the first four-wheel motor vehicle with combustion engine.
Articulate names like Franz Josef Popp, Austrian engineer and first general director of BMW AG, the “Bayerische
Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft” – today’s parent company of BMW Group – got the wheels rolling. Most
notably, BMW made a name for itself since the 1960s as manufacturer of high-price, comfortably furnished
and strongly motorized passenger cars with a sportive commitment.

Felgen aus hochwertigem Aluminium aus dem Hause Breyton

Um das perfekte Rad-Design und das niedrigste Radgewicht bei
optimalster Festigkeit zu erreichen, werden alle Räder während
der Konstruktion einer FEM-Analyse unterzogen und während
der Produktion warm ausgelagert. Die Warmauslagerung verstärkt die strukturelle Materialzusammensetzung und zugleich
die Elastizität, die FEM-Analyse ermöglicht aufregendes Design
bei gleichzeitig größtmöglicher Festigkeit.
Räder, die im Flow-Forming Verfahren hergestellt werden, sind
noch einmal deutlich leichter als Guss-Räder. Durch warmes ausrollieren der Felgenschulter wird bei dünnerer Wandstärke höhere
Festigkeit und Materialdynamik erreicht.
Die hochwertigste Leichtmetallfelge ist heute die Schmiedefelge aus
Aluminium. Das Rad und sein charakteristisches Design werden mittels
eines CNC-Fräs-Verfahrens aus einem geschmiedeten Rohling herausgearbeitet. Dabei ist die Stabilität und Dichte des Materials weitaus
größer als bei Felgen aus anderen Produktionsarten.
Als letzter Veredelungsvorgang werden alle Felgen mehrschichtig lackiert
oder elektrochemisch eloxiert. Erhöhte Sicherheit und filigranes Design bei
geringem Radgewicht zugleich sind Ansprüche jeder Breyton Felge.
Wheels made of high-quality aluminium by Breyton form the perfect synthesis between sportive
design and optimized driving characteristics. They are among the lightest wheels worldwide.
To find the perfect wheel design while retaining minimal weight and optimal strength every
wheel is FEM analyzed during construction and heat treated during production. Heat treatment
increases the material’s rigidity and elasticity, FEM analysis allows for stunning design coupled
with highest strength.
Wheels produced with flow-forming technology are even stronger than casted wheels. By rolling out the rim’s bed
the wall thickness is reduced and the material is compressed, making the wheel very solid and improving material
dynamics. The highest-quality light alloy wheels available today are forged wheels. The wheel and its characteristic design
are milled, using CNC processes, from a forged wheel blank. The resulting material is much stronger and denser than with wheels
produced using other technologies. In the final processing step every wheel is either coated or electro-chemically anodized in multiple
layers. Increased safety, delicate design and minimal weight are, at the same time, the expectation of every Breyton wheel.

Eine der beliebtesten Leichtmetallräder bei anspruchsvollen
Automobil-Ästheten, sind neben den Schmiedefelgen die
in Flow-Forming-Technologie hergestellten Räder.
Die gegossenen Felgenrohlinge werden im zweiten
Bearbeitungsschritt ausgewalzt. Der Großteil der
spanabhebenden Bearbeitung entfällt, beim Auswalzen
wird das Material zusätzlich verdichtet. Teile des Leichtmetallrades
können trotz geringerer Wandstärke äußerst stabil hergestellt werden. Das Gewicht wird um wichtige Prozente reduziert, es ergibt sich
eine wirkungsvolle Gewichtsersparnis von über 10 kg pro Fahrzeug im
fahrdynamisch wichtigen Bereich der ungefederten Masse.

forged wheels, are wheels produced with flow-forming technology.
The casted wheel blank, the rim’s bed in particular, is rolled out in a second processing
step. The majority of machining can be foregone, during milling the material is compressed additionally. That means parts of the wheel can be produced very solid while
allowing a narrower wall thickness. The weight is reduced by essential percentage points,
which implies an effective reduction of the dynamically important unsprung weight
of a car by over 10 kg.
