Hydrophilus acuminatus larvae are known to feed on aquatic animals. However, no
quantitative study about the feeding preference and indispensable prey animals for
their complete growth have been reported. In order to elucidate the feeding preference
and nutritional needs of the larvae, both field and laboratory experiments were carried
out. Seventeen species were collected in the field including the larvae of the water
scavenger beetle. The first instar larvae showed high predation bias on snails
compared to other animals. The larvae, which were provided with snails only, have
developed into second instar larvae. This indicates that even though the larvae of H.
acuminatus can feed on multiple kinds of invertebrates, it strongly prefers snails and
cannot finish its larval development without snails in the field.
