長文読解講座「接続詞に注意して読む」

文と文をつなぐ接続詞のある文は一見複雑に見えるが，しっかりと読むことで文の流れがわかりやすくな
る。今月学習した接続詞 when，while，because などに注目し，文の流れを正確につかむ練習をしよう。
今月の読み取りのポイント接続詞に注意して読む。
q　〈時〉を表す文に注意して読む
when や while のある文…〈時〉と出来事や行動を読み取る。
w　〈原因・理由〉を表す文に注意して読む
because のある文…〈原因・理由〉を読み取る。
※〈接続詞＋文Ａ，文Ｂ〉と〈文Ｂ接続詞＋文Ａ〉は同じ意味である。文の構造は一見複雑に
見えるが，接続詞＋文Ａのかたまりを意識するとよい。
例題
接続詞に注意しながら読んでみよう。

に続く文にそのときの内容が書かれている。よって，イが適切。

た」とあり，そのあとに because 〜とある。because 〜は前で述べたことの理由を表すので，it wasn’t

Last Friday I met a *foreigner at the station. When I saw the man, he was *asking
some questions in English of the station *workers. But they didn’t *answer because
they didn’t understand English. I walked to him and said, “Excuse me. May I help you?”
“Oh, thank you. I’m going to the *city hall,” the man said. Then I took him to the
bus stop. While we were walking, he talked about his country, *Singapore.
Singapore has four *official *languages, English, *Mandarin, *Malay and *Tamil.
People in Singapore usually use some languages at home. They use English at school,
in business and in government, so they can speak English very well. “English is a very
*important language for us,” he said.
When we got to the bus stop, he said to me, “Thank you. You are very kind.” I said
to him, “You’re welcome. Enjoy your stay in Japan.”
