However, as these new “holidays” are not official public holidays you don’t get to take the day off work. But these special events are a great chance to enjoy yourself with family and friends. The most popular of these new holidays is “Singles’ Day”. Singles’ Day got its name because the date consists of four "one"s and the connection between being single and the number “1”. This holiday is particularly popular amongst young Chinese people. When Singles’ Day nears, it seems that there are an increasing number of people desperate to find a date before Singles’ Day. Suddenly “matching parties” are being held more frequently and “matching corners” are set up in restaurants, cafés and bars as places where singles can mingle. The online dating app “MoMo” is also very popular. Once you upload your picture, this app will find other users in your vicinity who you can then contact. Of course, every year in the run up to Singles’ Day the number of app users drastically increases. So why is it that Chinese people are trying so hard to find a partner?
