Aspects of rurality and peasantry in nineteenth century eastern European Jewish society Prof. Mordechai (Motti) Zalkin Jewish History Department Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel) Prof. Zalkin's special field of interest is the cultural and social history of East European Jewry until World War II, mainly in the Baltic region. Among his books are: - A New Dawn: The Jewish Enlightenment in the Russian Empire – Social Aspects (2000) - Naujos Lietuvos žydų istorijos perspektyvos [New perspectives of Jewish history in Lithuania] (2009) - Modernizing Jewish Education in Nineteenth Century Eastern Europe (2016) In his recent published articles he examined the concept of "East European Jewry"; Childhood in traditional East European Jewish society; Tradition, enlightenment and democracy in 19th century East European Jewish society, and different aspects of Jewish life in interwar Lithuania.
