Prof. Zalkin's special field of interest is the cultural and social history of East European Jewry
until World War II, mainly in the Baltic region. Among his books are:
- A New Dawn: The Jewish Enlightenment in the Russian Empire – Social Aspects (2000)
- Naujos Lietuvos žydų istorijos perspektyvos [New perspectives of Jewish history in Lithuania]
(2009)
- Modernizing Jewish Education in Nineteenth Century Eastern Europe (2016)
In his recent published articles he examined the concept of "East European Jewry"; Childhood
in traditional East European Jewish society; Tradition, enlightenment and democracy in 19th
century East European Jewish society, and different aspects of Jewish life in interwar
Lithuania.
