SUMMARY
Whole Language in EFL learning :
Effective writing methodology in the Japanese classroom
MATSUMOTO Keiko
The purpose of this research is to identify the possibility of using the webbing maps in EFL
writing classes in Japanese junior high schools. The webbing map is a technique in Whole Language
Approach, a theme-oriented approach in language learning developed by Kenneth Goodman. The webbing map is an association map that presents students’experience and knowledge in the
form of a network of ideas. The advantage of the webbing map is not merely showing intellectual
elements in a student’
s mind but also revealing inter-relations of these associational nodes. Learners
themselves can use the network of knowledge thus available as a constant scaffolding to develop their
writing while teachers can also obtain useful information for instruction.
Combining theory and practice, the current research reports a practice of teaching with the
webbing map in detail and analyzes the results. Students draw webbing maps on the topic‘I’, then
they write about the same subject while receiving advice from the teacher. Both students and the
teacher refer to the map. The result demonstrates some positive changes in quantifiable aspects of
their writing as well as in quality. Conclusive evidence reports that the webbing map is an effective
technique for enhancing creativity in EFL writing.
