~The fourth day<Part 2>~
“Hi, Sally.”
My voice was shaking. I thought I would be accused of abandoning him on
purpose.
“Ken! I’m very happy to see you again. Are you Ok? What happened to you? Did
you have any trouble? I’m sorry for having lost sight of you.”
He said this with tears in his eyes. He looked so exhausted. He must’ve been
searching for me all day long.
“Don’t say sorry, Sally. Rather, let me apologize to you for what I did. As a matter
of fact, I left you intentionally. I’m terribly sorry for that.”
I apologized to him from the bottom of my heart. Looking him in the eye, I
discovered an unquestionable fact. He was not a bad guy after all. He might be
working for a bad company, but he himself didn’t have any intention to deceive
me or do me harm. I could see this in his eyes. He was different from the other
people who had tried to cheat me during the trip.
“I wanted to go around more freely, so I left you. I’m really sorry.”
I thought he would get angry, but he didn’t. Instead, he said,
“What a relief. So you didn’t get involved in any trouble. Ok, I will give you more
free time. I promise. But remember the fact that there are lots of bad guys here.”
“I know.”
I remembered how I was locked in a shop and almost forced to buy some
expensive stuff only a few hours before. I blamed myself for my bad decisions. I
had upset Sally after following another Japanese traveler’s advice, and I had got
involved in trouble after following an Indian taxi driver’s suggestion. It didn’t
matter whether it was Japanese or Indian advice that I followed. I was influenced
too much by what others said. Finally, I felt it is what you see with your eyes that
counts, not what others say or what information you get from the Internet or
books.
I decided to trust what I thought and felt.
I decided to continue the trip with Sally.

「ケン！また会えて本当によかった。大丈夫？何が起こったの？何かトラブルにあった
の？見失ってしまってごめんね。」

彼は涙を目に浮かべてこう言った。

「謝らないで、サリー。いやむしろ、僕に謝らせてくれ。実を言うと、僕が意図的に君の
元から去ったんだ。本当にごめん。」
※ apologize to 人 for 事「事で人に謝る」
※ as a matter of fact「実を言うと」(= in fact)
I apologized to him from the bottom of my heart.
僕は心の底から彼に謝った。
Looking him in the eye, I discovered an unquestionable fact.
彼の目を見て、僕は疑いようのない事実に気づいた。

He was not a bad guy after all.
結局のところ、彼は悪いやつじゃなかった。

He might be working for a bad company, but he himself didn’t have any intention
to deceive me or do me harm.
彼は悪い会社で働いているのかもしれない。けど、彼自身は僕をだましたり、害を与えた
りしようという意図は全くなかったのだ。

I could see this in his eyes.
僕は彼の目を見てこれが分かった。

彼は旅行中僕をだまそうとした他の人たちと違った。
“I wanted to go around more freely, so I left you. I’m really sorry.”
「僕はもっと自由に動き回りたかったんだ。だから君から離れた。本当にごめん。」
I thought he would get angry, but he didn’t. Instead, he said,
僕は彼が怒るだろうと思ったが、彼は怒らず、その代わり次のように言った。
“What a relief. So you didn’t get involved in any trouble. Ok, I will give you more
free time. I promise. But remember the fact that there are lots of bad guys here.”
「よかった～。つまりトラぶったわけじゃなかったんだ。オッケー、もっと自由時間をあ
げるよ。約束する。でもここにはたくさんの悪いやつがいるっていう事実を覚えておいて
欲しい。」

“I know.”
「うん、知ってる。」

た。

Finally, I felt it is what you see with your eyes that counts, not what others say or
what information you get from the Internet or books.
最終的に、大事なのは、人の言葉やネットや本から得た情報ではなく、自分の目で見たも
のだと感じた。

I decided to trust what I thought and felt.
僕は自分が思ったことや感じたことを信じることに決めた。
I decided to continue the trip with Sally.
僕はサリーとこの旅を続けることに決めた。
