Howard Philips Lovecraft, known as H.P. Lovecraft, may have been one of the most
influential American horror writers of the 20th century. He is most famous for his series of
stories centering around strange creatures from beyond space and time, although he also
wrote a great deal of poetry.
Lovecraft was born in 1890 to an upper-class family in Providence, Rhode Island, and his
troubled and unhappy life may have helped shape his dark and strange writings. His father
died when he was only eight years old, and he was himself sickly and only attended school
for a short time. He was raised primarily by his mother and aunts, especially after his
grandfather died in 1904. In 1908, just before he finished high school, he suffered from a
nervous breakdown, and spent the next five years almost as a hermit, with no contact with
anyone but his mother. In 1914, however, he started to correspond with an association of
amateur writers and began writing the horror fiction that would later make him famous.
Tragically, his mother was committed to a mental hospital in 1919, where she remained until
her death two years later. Lovecraft married and moved to New York City in 1924, but only a
few years later, economic difficulties led to his divorce and return to Rhode Island, where he
lived with an aunt until he passed away from cancer in 1937.
Lovecraft was not very well known while he was alive; most of his stories appeared in
“pulp” magazines, so called because of the very inexpensive and low-quality wood pulp paper
they were printed on. These magazines were not regarded very highly, as they had a focus
on not only horror, but fantasy, detective stories, superhero stories, and other “childish”
topics. They were mostly seen as cheap entertainment for working-class and young people.
However, his writings were popular with fans of horror and science fiction, and they only
grew in popularity in the years after his death. His technique of creating fictional but realsounding places and books, and referring to them across a number of stories, was very
influential. He also shared his creations with other writers, and many of the books, characters,
and monsters he created appeared in others’ stories. These techniques helped the fantastic
things and situations he wrote about seem more believable, and more frightening, to his

readers. Altogether, he wrote more than sixty short pieces of fiction, many of which have
been used many times over as the basis for modern works of entertainment.
Although Lovecraft’s stories were somewhat popular among fans of horror and science
fiction when he was alive, he has become widely famous after his death. Few modern horror
fans have never heard of H.P. Lovecraft, and many of the most famous horror writers today
claim him as an important inspiration. Stephen King, author of such books as Carrie and The
Shining, has often written and spoken of the inspiration he takes from Lovecraft. A new
adjective, “Lovecraftian,” has even entered the English language to describe the sub-genre of
horror fiction that he had such an important hand in creating. Although Lovecraft’s own life
was short and tragic, he has brought enjoyment to innumerable readers through his stories.
