Chitose・Shikotsu Hyoto Matsuri or Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival, Chitose, Hokkaido. Many ice
sculptures exhibited on the shore are lit up from 4:30 pm to 10 pm daily during the festival period.
A fireworks display is scheduled from 6:30 pm to around 6:45 pm on Saturdays, Sundays and
holidays during the festival period. Some more events are scheduled during the period.

66th Sapporo Yuki Matsuri, Snow Festival in Sapporo, Hokkaido. The festival, the biggest in scale
of this kind, started in 1950, and has become one of the most popular events in winter for now.
Approximately 200 snow creations and ice sculptures are exhibited at three sites, mainly at the
Odori Site with enormous snow creations and many attractions, at the Susukino Site with fantastic
ice sculptures, and at the Tsu-dome Site with the huge playground where children and adults can
play in snow.

Asahikawa Fuyu Matsuri, Winter Festival in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. Many snow creations and ice
statues are exhibited at the Asahibashi-kahan site (on the riversides of the Ishikarigawa River), on
Heiwa-dori Street where about 50 ice sculptures are to be judged in competition. Illumination over
the statues is held from 8 pm to 8:15 pm daily, and a fireworks display is held from 7 pm to 7:15 pm
on the 6th and 11th. Many attractive events such as a show collaborated with ULTRAMAN,
Japanese drumming and dancing, and a long sliding way are scheduled during the festival period.

Abashiri-Okhotsk Ryuhyo Matsuri, Drift Ice Festival around Abashiri Port, Abashiri, Hokkaido,
features thousands of ice floe covering over the sea, and about 40 snow sculptures and ice
carvings on exhibition, which are lit up from around 4:30 pm until 9 pm daily from the 7th to the
10th. Many events such as a popular song-show, games and performances are scheduled during
the festival period.

Zao Juhyo Light-up at Zao Onsen Ski Ground, Yamagata, Yamagata Pref., features the lighting up
Juhyo , known as "Ice Monster", trees covered with frost, along the Zao Ropeway Sancho Line and
around Jizo Sancho Sta., from 5 pm to 9 pm daily until Feb. 28th. On Jan. 31st, an event in which
skiers and snowboarders holding torchlights descend on the Uwanodai ski slope under a fireworks
display is held from 7:15 pm to 8:30 pm.

The festival is highlighted by ice sculptures, snow carvings and many Kamakura (huts made of
snow) illuminated from 4 pm to 9 pm and a fireworks display is scheduled from 7:30 pm, every night.
Many more events such as games and demonstrations of snow boarders are scheduled during the
period.

About 200 snow lanterns and about 300 Mini- Kamakura (miniature huts made of snow) are lit up
from around 4:30 pm to 9 pm daily, which creates fantastic atmosphere in the Hirosaki Castle park
during the festival period.

Kariwano Otsuna-hiki, or a tug of war in Kariwano, Daisen, Akita Pref. The festival with a 500year history is designated as one of the National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties, and
is held to pray for a rich harvest of the year. Townspeople lay out a giant straw-rope (70
centimeters in diameter and over 100 meters long) for a fight on Omachi-dori Street around 7 pm,
and the tug-of-war starts at 9 pm.

Feb. 11
Daito Ohara Mizu-kake Matsuri, or Water Pouring Festival at Ohara Hachiman Shrine, Daito-machi,
Ichinoseki, Iwate Pref. This festival is for a prevention of fire with a 350-year history. Local
people make a new giant Shimenawa (sacred straw festoon) which is fixed to Ohara Hachiman
Shrine from 10:10 am to 12 noon. A parade of floats, Taiko drumming and local performing arts,
and firefighters are presented from 12:40 pm. About 300 half-naked men who are purified by the
ritual at the Shrine at 2:30 pm, rush on the streets in the town, while townspeople dash cold water
over the rushing men from 3 pm to around 3:50 pm.

Bonden Festival in Daisen on the 11th, and in Yokote on the 16th and 17th, Akita Pref. Dozens
of Bonden (sacred bamboo baskets decorated with colorful cloth and streamers, 30kg in weight
and 5 meters in length each) are carried by villagers who vie with each other to be the first in
dedicating Bonden to the Shrines.
(1) On the 11th in Daisen, boats transfer Bonden from Hanadate Pier to the other side of the
Omono River from around 9:30 am, and then people carry all these Bonden up to Izusan Shrine on
the mountain until around 11:30 am.
(2) On the 16th, Bonden Workmanship Contest is held at the festival site near Yokote Chiiki-kyoku,
Yokote City Hall branch office, from around 9:30 am to 1 pm. On the 17th in Yokote, local young
men carrying about 30 Bonden leave Yokote Chiiki-kyoku at around 10 am for Asahiokayama
Shrine, to which Bonden are dedicated around 1 pm.

min. to the Omonogawa River site.

Namahage Sedo Matsuri Festival at Shinzan Shrine, Oga, Akita Pref. The festival, designated as
one of the National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties, features about 15 Namahage
(men wearing devil masks) dancing wildly, drumming vigorously, running around and then serving
mochi (rice cakes) to people thronged in the precincts of the Shrine, from around 6:30 pm to
around 8:30 pm daily during the period.

Uesugi Yukidoro Matsuri, or Snow Lantern Festival, Yonezawa, Yamagata Pref. About 300 (Yukidoro big snow lanterns) and more than 3,000 Yuki-bonbori (small snow lanterns) at Uesugi Shrine
and at Matsugasaki Koen Park are lit up from 5:30 pm to 9 pm (to 8 pm on the 15th) on both days.

Yokote Kamakura, Snow Huts in Yokote, Akita Pref. Playing in snow huts is a popular pastime in
winter for children living in the heavy snowfall areas. They make snow huts called " Kamakura " in
which they play games and eat traditional delicacies. About 100 snow huts, and a number of snow
creations are built on Kamakura-dori Street, in front of the Yokote City Hall branch office and at
Yokote Park and so on. The best time to see this event is from 6 pm to 9 pm daily during the
festival period.

Kuromori Kabuki (local Kabuki Play) with a more-than-270-year tradition is performed on the
makeshift stage set up in the precincts of Hie Shrine at Kuromori, Sakata, Yamagata Pref.
Shonen-Taiko (Japanese drumming performed by boys), Kodomo Kabuki (play by boys) are
performed after the rites starting from 10 am, and the Kabuki & Kyogen (Noh farce) are performed
from around 1 pm to 5 pm on both days.

Emburi or Local Dance Festival, Chojasan Shinra Shrine, Hachinohe, Aomori Pref. This is a unique
harvest festival native to Hachinohe and its vicinities, with an 800-year history, and is designated
as one of the National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. On the 17th, over 30 grouped
villagers in fancy costumes trail up to Chojasan Shinra Shrine around 7 am and perform Ohayashi
music, and then parade through the city from around 10 am to 11:20 am. Emburi (local dances) are
performed under the flickering torchlights at Shimin Hiroba (civic square) from 12:15 pm on the
17th, from 1 pm and from 2 pm on the 19th & 20th, and from 6 pm to 9 pm daily during the festival
period.

Atami Baien Ume Matsuri, or Japanese Apricot Festival at Atami Baien (Japanese apricot garden),
Atami, Shizuoka Pref. There are about 470 Japanese apricot trees of 60 species in the garden and
they begin to bloom usually from the middle of January. Various entertainments are scheduled
during the period. The garden is open from 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission is \300.

Toyohashi Oni Matsuri, or Devil Festival at Akumikanbe Shinmeisha Shrine, Toyohashi, Aichi Pref.,
is designated as one of the National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. It features
several kinds of Kagura (Shinto dance with music) dedicated to the Shrine to dispel evil spirits,
and Ame-maki (candy-throwing ceremony) to pray for a good harvest of the year from 10 am on
both days. On the 11th, the festival is highlighted by " Oni-odori " in which Tengu (a long-nosed
goblin) banters red devils from around 2 pm to 3 pm, thereafter Kagura (Shinto dance with music)
is dedicated to the Shrine until 5 pm.

Kawazu-zakura Matsuri, or Cherry Blossom Festival in Kawazu, Kamo-gun, Shizuoka Pref. Rich
pink blossoms are distinctive of Kawazu-zakura which come into bloom in February. One could
enjoy seeing the cherry blossoms along the Kawazu River, even at night until 9 pm, since the
blossoms are lit up daily during the period.

Akatani Dontsuki Matsuri Festival at Akatanisan Shrine, Shibata, Niigata Pref. The festival has an
over 700-year history. Local men dressed in only loincloths jostle one another in the precincts of
the Shrine to pray for a good harvest and good health throughout the year, from 7 pm to around
8:15 pm.

Katsuyama Sagicho, burning piles used New Year's decorations at Katsuyama, Fukui Pref. The
festival with a 300-year history is held to pray for a good harvest for this year. Local performing
arts to the tune of Japanese music and drumming are demonstrated on a dozen of Yagura (wooden
high stages) in the city from 1 pm to 10 pm on the 21st, and from 10 am to around 8:30 pm on the
22nd. Dondo-yaki , setting fire to New Year's decorations and ornaments, is scheduled on the
riverbank of the Kuzuryu River from 9 pm on the 22nd.

Yah-Ya Matsuri Festival at Owase Shrine, Owase, Mie Pref. The festival with a 300-year tradition
is known as a "quarreling" festival. Men in traditional white costumes shove and jostle one
another at three places in the city from 7:30 pm, and then Kori-kaki , men jumping into icy ocean of
Owase Bay to purify themselves, takes place from around 8:30 pm on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th,. On
the 5th, a procession of feudal lords and local dancing parades on the old Kumano road to the
Shrine from 12:30 pm to 4 pm. Japanese archery from 7 pm and Shishimai lion dance from 8:40
pm are demonstrated in the precincts of the Shrine.

Setsubun Mantoro, or Lantern Festival at Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Nara, Nara Pref. Bugaku (ancient
court dance with music) are performed from 5:30 pm to 6 pm. More than 3,000 stone and bronze
lanterns in the precincts which had been dedicated by people in the Heian period (794-1185) up to
now, are lit up from 6 pm to 8:30 pm.

Baika-sai, or Japanese Apricot Blossom Festival at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto.
Nodate or open-air tea ceremony (Fee: \1,500 per person) is held from 10 am to 3 pm near
Sanko-mon Gate. There are 1,500 apricot trees of 50 species in the garden, and is open to the
public from the beginning of February to the middle of March, depending on the flowering.

Akiba Matsuri Festival of Akiba Shrine, Niyodokawa, Kochi Pref., has an over 200-year history, and
features a pageant of 200 townspeople wearing traditional costumes following Mikoshi (portable
shrine). They start from Iwaya Shrine at 9 am, and parade along the mountain paths stopping by
three major sites where they perform local performing arts to the tune of music, and eventually
arrive at Akiba Shrine at 3:30 pm.

Saidaiji Eyo or Hadaka Matsuri, literally Naked Festival of Saidaiji Temple, Okayama, Okayama Pref.
This festival is the largest in scale of this kind. Some 9,000 young men wearing only loincloth
vigorously purify themselves by pouring cold water over their bodies in the Yoshii River. They
gather at the Shrine from around 5:40 pm, and then vie with each other to get a pair of Shingi
(amulets) which are thrown over the throng by the priest in the compound from 10 pm to around
midnight. The gallery tickets are sold at the temple on the day.

Yanagawa Hina Matsuri Sagemon Meguri, or Girl's Festival of Yanagawa, Fukuoka Pref. Sagemon
are handsewn ornaments which are displayed all over the city for this festival. When a baby girl is
born, her mother and grandmothers sew Sagemon stitch by stitch wishing her to grow up healthy,
and decorate them at both sides of Hina dolls to celebrate her first Girl's Festival. On Feb. 11th, a
procession of girls and adults in traditional Hina doll attire, and floats adorned with colorful
Sagemon , takes place from 10 am. On Mar. 15th, a parade of girls and adults dressed in Hina doll
costumes sitting on the boats sails through the canals bedecked with Sagemon from 11 am to
12:20 pm. On Apr. 3rd, Nagashibina (floating paper dolls ceremony) from a boat starts from 11 am
to 11:30 am. Many more events are scheduled during the period.

Tenryo Hita Ohina-Matsuri, or Girl's Festival of Hita, Oita Pref. The Hita area prospered under the
reign of Tenryo (Tokugawa Shogunate dependency) in the time of the Edo era. Hina Ningyo or
traditional Japanese dolls which have been handed down for generations, have been well preserved,
and are displayed at about 20 houses in the city, where everybody can visit and enjoy to view from

2015 Nagasaki Lantern Festival, Nagasaki Pref., is a picturesque Chinese event featuring 15,000
lanterns in the shape of various creatures along the streets lit up daily during the festival period.
Chinese dragon dances and some other performing arts are daily demonstrated at Minato Koen
Park, Chuo Koen Park, Kofukuji Temple and other sites. Kotei-gyoretsu (a parade of Chinese
emperor) marches from Chuo Koen to Minato Koen (park) from 2 pm to 4:30 pm on the 21st and
the 28th. Maso-gyoretsu (a parade of the goddess of voyage) starts from Koshi-byo to Kofukuji
Temple from 2 pm to 5:20 pm on the 22nd, and from Kofukuji Temple to Koshi-byo from 2 pm to
5:20 pm on Mar. 1. Many other events are scheduled during the festival period.

Japan. According to the lunar calendar, "Setsubun " marks the last day of winter. People throng
temples and shrines to vie with each other for lucky beans which are thrown by priests, monks or
famous figures who shout "Fuku-wa-uchi, Oni-wa-soto !" (Fortune in, Devils out!) to drive away
imaginary devils. Mamemaki, bean-throwing ceremonies are scheduled at the following major

and from 11:30 am on the 28th. Matcha (powdered green tea) is served from 10 am on the 22nd,

Hari-kuyo, or memorial services for used, broken needles and pins. People put those needles and
pins into a huge cake of Tofu (soybean curd) placed on an altar, praying for improving their skills
of needlework. The services are conducted at the following three temples:
(1) Shojuin Temple, Shinjuku-ku. The memorial service is held from around 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm.
