VOCABULARY – FAMILY & HOMETOWNS
Starting next week and continuing for 2 weeks, the main topic of most of our classroom activities will be
family and hometowns. In order that you gain the most benefit from what we will be doing, you are
strongly advised to learn the following English family and hometown related vocabulary. Note the
following:
Ø
There will be no vocabulary test. However, learning these words will help you understand better
the listenings, get better marks in the dictations, will help you participate better in class, and will, of
course, help you in the TOEIC test at the end of term.
Ø
As you know already, many English words have more than one meaning. When you check the
meaning of any words you don’t know in a dictionary, make sure you choose the meaning that is
related to family and hometowns.

Unit 1
R & L – TAKE CARE!
Not only is the difference between R and L hard for Japanese speakers to make, it is also hard for you
to hear. Look at the diagrams on the blackboard that show the differing tongue positions for R and L.
Now repeat after me and try to make a difference between the following words:
1
2
3
4
5
6
Question:
river
wrong
crows
brew
crime
correct
liver
long
close
blue
climb
collect
Listen to me, and circle the word you think you hear.
Very often a mistake with L and R can cause problems as it creates a new word in English. Sometimes
this new word has a different meaning, so an English speaker can quickly work out what is being said.
For example:
free
frog
reef
royal
cram
Question:
flea
flog
leaf
loyal
clam
What do the words in bold
太字
mean?
Sometimes, however, the new word is very common. For example:
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
Question:
grass
road
rain
row
raw
pray
breed
glass
load
lane
low
law
play
bleed
Listen to me, and circle the word you think you hear.
Today’s tongue twister 早口言葉:

TH: θ & ð
Although the θ and ð sounds are not the most common in English, they do unfortunately occur in some
of the most frequent words in the language. Look where my tongue is and repeat the θ sound after me.
Now try ð (= θ”). Repeat after me the following very frequent English words:
the
these
their
than
then
those
there
thing
this
they
other
three
that
them
though
thus
無声音
Question:
Which of the above have the voiceless sound
θ and which the voiced
有声音
sound
ð? Write the appropriate symbol (θ or ð) next to each word above.
Usually a mistake with th can be understood by a native speaker of English because the meaning of the
new word is nearly always completely different. For example:
1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
Question:
think
thin
thing
theme
thaw
thick
thigh
thumb
youth
sink
sin
sing
seem
saw
sick
sigh
sum
use
What do the words highlighted in bold above mean?
Some th words can be particularly difficult for Japanese students to pronounce when they are in
子音連結
consonant clusters.
Let’s practice the following very tricky words by repeating after me:
fifth
sixth
twelfth
布・布巾
cloth
布巾の複数

SPORTS & GAMES
In Japanese, when you play a game or a sport, you use する or やる. Very easy! However, in English,
it’s not so easy. There are 4 rules to remember:
Rule 1
If it is a sport that uses a ball or something similar, for example a shuttlecock or a puck,
then use the verb play:
He plays golf
Can you play volleyball?
Rule 2
If it is a GAME, then use the verb play:
They like playing poker
We played pachinko last week
Rule 3
If it is a MARTIAL ART , then use the verb do:
She does judo
I can do karate
Rule 4
ANYTHING ELSE, uses the name of the sport as a verb:
スポーツの名前を動詞化する
I ski
She skated yesterday
With your partner, write down the name of three new sports or games in the table below in rows 1,
2 and 3, the place where they are played, and any equipment needed to play them. Write down also
which verb the sport uses. Three examples are already given.
SPORT/GAME

Then interview some classmates and write down four more sports or games in rows 4 - 7.
Some questions you might ask are:
What is the sport?
Where do you play ______ ?
What do you need to ____________?

VOCABULARY – FOOD & DRINK
Starting next week and continuing for 3 weeks, the main topic of most of our classroom activities will be
food and drink. In order that you gain the most benefit from what we will be doing, you are strongly
advised to learn the following English food and drink related vocabulary. Note the following:
Ø
There will be no vocabulary test. However, learning these words will help you understand better
the listenings, get better marks in the dictations, will help you participate better in class, and will, of
course, help you in the TOEIC test at the end of term.
Ø
As you know already, many English words have more than one meaning. When you check the
meaning of any words you don’t know in a dictionary, make sure you choose the meaning that is
related to food and drink.

OTHER DIFFICULT PRONUNCIATIONS
So far we have looked at R, L, V and TH. There still remain, however, three more English pronunciations with which
Japanese students tend to have problems.
1. SHI ~ SI
The reason why Japanese students find it difficult to differentiate these two sounds is obvious: the
Japanese language has only shi but never si. Repeat the si sound after me.
Differentiating between them is very very important as problems might arise! Repeat the following
words after me:
1
2
3
4
5
6
ship
sheep
sheet
she
shin
sheen
sip
seep
seat
sea / see / C
sin
seen
Question: What do the words highlighted in bold mean?
2. YE & YI
The modern Japanese language has sounds for ya, yo and yu (や, よ and ゆ), but not for ye or yi.
Repeat the following words after me:
1
2
3
4
5
year
yes
yearn
yeast
yell
ear
S
earn
east
L
3. WO & WU
Japanese speakers often have problems with wo and wu. Try repeating the following words after me:
would / wood
won’t
woman
wool
wolf
怪我
wound
Try these four minimal pairs:最小対立語
悲哀
woe
求愛する
woos
:
:
支払う義務がある
owe
にじみ出る
ooze
war
woken
:

オーク材の

Finally, today’s tongue twister: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

WEEK 4: PREPARING YOUR RESULTS
Ø
Collect all your data together. Think about how to deal with the answers to open-ended questions.
Ø
Look at your results. What do they tell you? Very high or very low numbers can tell you a lot. Is
there any surprising information?
Ø
Think about how you are going to present your results to the class. Will you draw tables or graphs
or pictures? How are you going to design your poster? It should be as clear and interesting as
possible.
