It was a coincidence that I had majored in Japanese in my undergraduate education in China. This coincidence led me to come to Japan for further education and to earn a teaching position. I would never have expected that language teaching would become my livelihood. Up to now, there were moments when I had gone through hard times; however, I now feel myself lucky because not only could I pursue higher education but also by having had contact with gentle people from different worlds and cultures, I can have a broader perspective of life and of human beings. I strongly encourage you to become aware of cultural differences, to bridge these differences with your own, and finally assimilate them. I have not doubt this will be an enjoyable experience. Otaru University of Commerce is relatively small in size; however, I assure you that you will not be disappointed coming here. SATO, Ami 〈First Year Student, Graduate School of Commerce, Major in Modern Commerce〉 I used to be a tutor for an exchange student from the U.S. and my main job was to help her with her Japanese conversation. Meanwhile, we also did things together: going to movies and talking over a cup of tea or on the telephone. Through these activities, I was pleased to find out the difference of culture through my friend: she often enjoyed the Japanese style strawberry shortcakes that are difficult to find in the U.S., and she was surprised at the great differences in the fashion style between the Japanese students and the American students. In addition, I could ask some questions about her country and learn some slang expressions, which I would not be able to learn in the class room. It is a good place to have exchanges with Japanese students and the local community. 〈※ 5〉 〈言語センター・教授〉 私も留学生の出身です。日本語を専攻にしたの は偶然でした。しかし，日本語を通して，日本に 留学し，日本で就職し，語学が生涯の糧になると は予想もできませんでした。辛いこともありまし たが，学問ができただけではなく，違う世界，違 う文化を知り，違う生身の人々の優しさに触れら れて，人生，人間についてたくさんのものが見え るようになったことはとてもラッキーなことでし た。異なる文化に配慮をし，異なる文化のあいだ に橋渡しをし，その文化を主体的に取り入れる楽 しみを是非ご自分の手で掴みましょう。小樽商科 大学は，規模は小さいですが，きっと貴方をがっ かりさせないでしょう。冬の大雪だけは邪魔者だ とも私などは思うのですが，それも自然の授かり ものですので，学問とともに満喫して行きまし ょうね。 〈※4〉 講義では得られない たくさんのことを学べるのが魅力 佐藤 亜美さん 〈大学院現代商学専攻１年〉 私はアメリカの留学生のチューターをし，主に 会話練習の相手役をしました。また映画やお茶に 行ったり，部屋に呼び合って長電話をしたりしま した。スポンジ部分がふわふわな日本の苺のショ ートケーキが珍しく美味しいのでよく食べたこと や，日本の学生の服装に最初は驚いたことなど， 相手と自分の国の違いを直接聞くことができ，と ても楽しかったです。講義だけでは学べない日常 生活の疑問や，友人の間で使うもっとくだけた表 現も学べるのが，チューター制度の魅力の一つだ と思います。 〈※5〉 国際交流サークルも活発です 多くの留学生，チューター，日本人学生が，国 際交流サークルのメンバーに加わっています｡日 本人学生と交流し，地域社会と交わるには，最適 の場所でしょう｡ 25
