A NEW TIMELESS EDITION
Sono oramai passati oltre 10 anni da quando
Axo Light ha iniziato lo sviluppo di questa
straordinaria collezione disegnata da Manuel
Vivian: già allora, nonostante ci fossero solo
alcuni disegni e qualche schizzo, si poteva
intuire la grande e sobria eleganza che il
progetto Clavius custodiva.
Si profilavano dunque giorni di lavoro nei
quali dovevo rispettare i mirabolanti schizzi di
concezione nella redazione dei disegni esecutivi
e trovare al contempo una nuova storia da
raccontare.

TECHNICAL DATA
All’epoca avevo di recente rivisto “2001 Odissea
nello spazio” di Stanley Kubrik: mi aveva
affascinato la presenza misteriosa del Monolite
che nel film compare nei momenti chiave della
storia. Trovavo curioso che in quella collezione
si potessero ritrovare la stessa presenza
auratica e la stessa fascinosa stereometria del
ben più famoso parallelepipedo alieno descritto
per la prima volta da Arthur Clarke. Durante la
ricerca del nome da attribuire alla collezione
mi ricordai di quell’elemento misterioso e dopo
qualche indugio pensai che “Clavius”, il cratere
della base lunare immaginata da Kubrik/Clarke,
potesse essere perfetto. Poco importava che
fosse il nome di un famoso cratere della Luna
derivato dal matematico e astronomo Clau
latinizzato Clavius poiché il risultato avrebbe
inciso ulteriormente nella resa in termini di
fascinazione.
Manuel Vivian intanto incalzava con i disegni
e la collezione cresceva. A distanza di 10 anni
conservo con vivo piacere la memoria di quella
stagione fruttuosa. Dopo aver più volte ampliato
la collezione, siamo ora felici di proporre una
nuova finitura oro della montatura, il nuovo
colore sabbia dei fili setati dei paralumi, nuovi
modelli per nuove tipologie ed infine nuove
sorgenti a LED più efficienti. Mi auguro che la
nostra ricerca possa completare l’offerta di una
collezione di lampade che ha dato e continua a
dare tantissime soddisfazioni ad Axo Light.
Clavius è dunque senza tempo? Come il
misterioso monolite, la collezione percorre
spazi e tempi, lungo una parabola di successo
che ancora oggi continuiamo a rilevare.

More than 10 years have gone by since Axo Light
began the development of this extraordinary
collection designed by Manuel Vivian: even
then, despite the fact that there were only a few
designs and a couple of sketches, the great,
sober elegance of the Clavius project was clear.
Those were days when I was trying to follow the
incredible conceptual sketches in the realization
of the executive drawings and, at the same time,
I was trying to find a new story to tell.
I had also just watched “2001: A Space Odyssey”
by Stanley Kubrick once again. I was fascinated
by the mysterious presence of the monolith that
appeared at key moments in the film. I found a
very interesting connection between the auratic
presence and the fascinating stereometry of
the better known alien parallelepiped described
for the first time by Arthur Clarke and our new
collection Clavius.
When searching for the name of the collection,
I remembered that mysterious element and,
after some hesitation, I thought that “Clavius”,
the name of the moon crater imagined by
Kubrick/Clarke, would be perfect. I didn’t really
care that the name came from a famous moon
crater, derived from the mathematician and
astronomer Clau - rendered as Clavius in Latin
– because the result would have made it even
more fascinating.
Manuel Vivian rapidly went on realizing his
designs and the collection kept on growing.
Ten years later I still have a vivid and pleasant
memory of that fruitful time. After having
enlarged the collection several times, we are
now delighted to offer a new gold finish for the
frames, a new sand colour for the silky threads
of the lampshades, new models for new types of
lights and new, more efficient LED light sources.
I hope that our research and development can
complete the range of this lighting collection
that has been and continues to be a great source
of satisfaction for Axo Light. Does this mean that
Clavius is timeless? Just like the mysterious
monolith, the collection covers space and time,
along a path of success that goes on day by day.

MANUEL VIVIAN
Nato a Venezia nel 1971, si diploma all’Istituto d’Arte
di Venezia e comincia giovanissimo ad interessarsi
al design, soprattutto del vetro soffiato, anche grazie
all’attività di famiglia. Dopo i successi dei primi
progetti in vetro, allarga i suoi interessi ai vari settori
dell’interior design. Sin da quando nasce Axo Light,
nel 1996, collabora costantemente con essa e ne
diviene il designer principale.
Born in Venice in 1971, he gained a diploma at the
Venice Art institute and began to design at a very young
age, in particular blown glass, thanks also to his family
business. Following the success of his first projects in
glass, Manuel enlarged his range of interests to various
other fields of interior design. Since the creation of Axo
Light in 1996, he has collaborated constantly with the
company and has become its main designer.
