The Metamorphosis of Quartz

Our journey takes us now back to the Hellenes who gave our science its name. The
marvelous columns of quartz arose their
awe and their curiosity. Perhaps because
of the pureness of those columns, they
associated quartz with water that would
have been solidified and densified by the
cold (κρύος = ice-cold) and the pressure
of the mountains, and so they named the
beautiful polyhedra κρύσταλλος (= frozen
water). Nowadays, our world can hardly
be imagined without silicon dioxide, to
such an extent sensors and actuators
make it more agreeable. It also allows us
to correctly measure the time of progress,

Die Metamorphose des Bergkristalls
Unsere Reise führt uns jetzt zu den alten
Hellenen, welche unserer Wissenschaft
den Namen gaben. Die wunderschönen
Säulen des Bergkristalls weckten ihre
Bewunderung und Neugier. Vielleicht der
Lauterkeit der Säulen wegen brachten sie
Quarz mit Wasser in Verbindung, welches
durch die Kälte (κρύος = eiskalt) und den
Druck der Gebirge verdichtet wurde,
und nannten den Bergkristall deshalb
κρύσταλλος (= gefrorenes Wasser). Heute
ist Siliziumdioxid aus unserer Welt kaum
mehr wegzudenken. Nicht nur, dass es
über Sensoren und Aktuatoren unsere Leben entscheidend vereinfacht; es erlaubt
uns vor allem auch, die Zeit des Fortschritts richtig zu messen. Schliesslich
danken wir den schweizerischen Strahlern
dafür, dass sie unsere Seele mit immer
neuen Funden erquicken.

La métamorphose du quartz.
Notre voyage nous amène chez les
Hellènes qui, à travers un solide facetté
transparent, donnèrent un nom à notre
science. La limpidité de magnifiques
colonnes de quartz éveilla la curiosité de
nos anciens qui associèrent ces sculptures à de l’eau gelée, solidifiée à jamais
au cœur des montagnes par un froid
glacial (κρύος). La glace (κρύσταλλος) est
donc étymologiquement à la source de
la cristallographie. De nos jours, les propriétés piézoélectriques de ces cristaux
de roches sont exploitées à travers les
capteurs, les actuateurs ou oscillateurs.
Sans cette «glace» de dioxyde de silicium,
notre monde moderne ne saurait être à
l’heure du progrès. Qu’il nous soit permis
à travers le mois de mars de rendre
hommage aux cristalliers suisses et à leur
association.

La metamorfosi del quarzo

Il nostro viaggio ci porta indietro ai tempi
dei Greci, che hanno dato il nome alla
nostra scienza. Le meravigliose colonne
di quarzo crearono stupore e curiosità.
Forse per la purezza di quelle colonne, i
Greci associarono il quarzo all‘acqua, che
sarebbe stata solidificata dal freddo (κρύος
= freddo) e dalla pressione dei monti, così
chiamarono questi bellissimi solidi poliedrici κρύσταλλος (= acqua raffreddata). Oggi
il nostro mondo non potrebbe essere immaginato senza il diossido di silicio, tanto
sono necessari i sensori e gli interruttori a
renderlo migliore. Ci consentono anche di
misurare il progresso. Infine, ringraziamo
la società Svizzera di cercatori di minerali
che rinfrescano e ravvivano il nostro suolo
con sempre nuove scoperte
