Remark
S 3 (see under Opus 2): Concertos I, II, III, IV, VI.
The dedicatee is Ferdinand Maria Innocenz Joseph Michael of Bavaria (Brussels 16991783 Vienna), a son of Maximilian II Emanuel Elector of Bavaria. He later served as a
general in the Imperial Army.
On the title page the volume is called Libro Primo, which is right for the six concertos
that follow. Nothing is known about a Libro Secondo. The number 477 was given to the
Libro Secondo of Facco’s Pensieri adriarmonici (Libro primo with no. 469). No. 485
seems to open. Perhaps this number was reserved for a Libro Secondo.

PART FOUR: THE CATALOGUE: D’ALAY — FUX

— Derosier — Concerts — (Pointel, 1688?) —
NICOLAS DEROSIER, ‘VII Concerts ou Ouvertures, Allemandes, Sarabandes, Courantes, etc. à trois parties et
un concert à quatre parties, pour toutes sortes d’instruments.’ Amsterdam: Antoine Pointel, 1688?
The data in connection with Derosier concerts are equivocal at first sight. The Pointel catalogue of 1689
gives only ‘Concerts a 4,’ a title resumed in Roger’s publisher’s catalogue of 1697B, apparently signalling a
take-over. This title is changed into ‘Ouvertures, Allemandes, Sarabandes, etc.’ in the catalogue 1697D.
These concerts were sold for f4.
Roger’s first sales catalogue 1698EE lists ‘VIII Concert ou Ouvertures, Allemandes, Sarabandes, etc.’ for
guitar and ad libitum melody parts (two trebles and figured bass), of which the guitar part sold for f5, all
parts together for f9. That means that the melody parts were sold for f4, the same price as the concerts or
overtures in the publisher’s catalogue. It is therefore difficult not to assume that the ‘guitar concerts’ are the
same as the other concerts, but it remains unclear why the guitar concerts are in the sales catalogue, the
version for melody instruments and figured bass in the publishing catalogue.
The sales catalogues bring another, third version of apparently the same concerts. Now they are in score,
for melody instrument and figured bass only, and sold per concert.
The above given relations between the various versions are by no means certain, but they seems
satisfactory to explain the various, seemingly paradoxical listings in the catalogues.
Thus, this collection of eight concerts (or rather: suites) was apparently available in three versions, which
could be performed separately or combined:

Remark
Roger must have bought plates and stock in 1698 or 1699. In 1699 the edition appears
among those for sale. Then Roger printed his own issue. Both on the title engraving and
on the engraved title he added ‘Ce Livre se vend à Amsterdam Chez Estienne Roger
Marchand libraire.’ Since the edition appears among his own editions in the catalogues
from 1700 onwards, the new issue must have been created in 1700.

Johann Wolfgang Franck (born Unterschwaningen, Middle Franconia 1644, died c.
1710?) was active as a musician and composer in Ansbach and Hamburg, mostly as a
composer of German operas. The sonatas published by Roger seem to be his only
instrumental works.

Remarks
This is an unusual publication within Roger’s catalogue, being the only Italian opera
score. It is Roger’s largest and also most expensive publication. It is unclear why this
opera, which was premiered in Vienna on 28 August 1719 should be published two years
later in Amsterdam. The edition, with Pariati’s letter of dedication addressed to the
Emperor, seems to be an authentic edition.
