In un futuro prossimo, Kurt (Simon Merrells) e Eva (Ana Ularu) vivono oltre la grande muraglia degli Stati Uniti d’Europa, nelle
terre abbandonate dopo la crisi economica globale. Lei è incinta e, per assicurare un futuro migliore al loro bambino,
vogliono entrare in Europa illegalmente.

Affrontano un lungo e disperato viaggio che parte dalle terre aride e finisce in uno strettissimo tunnel scavato illegalmente
sotto la muraglia. Riescono a superare il confine, ma sono catturati dalla polizia dell’immigrazione che li confina in un centro
di detenzione temporanea costringendoli a separarsi.

Qui scoprono che ad ogni persona è assegnato un indice di sostenibilità basato sul benessere e la produttività personale.
L’indice li divide in classi, decidendo chi può sopravvivere e chi dovrà morire. Secondo questo calcolo, Kurt è considerato
‘potenzialmente sostenibile’, detenuto in attesa di raggiungere l’INDICE ZERO che gli permetterà di diventare cittadino
europeo. EVA, invece, è considerata ‘non sostenibile’, detenuta in attesa dell’espulsione oltre i confini. In Europa, infatti, la
gravidanza naturale è illegale. La gestazione dei bambini avviene in uteri artificiali per non far perdere alle donne nove mesi di
produttività.

Kurt, nonostante tutto, decide di non piegarsi agli eventi. Deve liberarla e mantenere la promessa che le ha fatto.

NOTE DI REGIA
La mia volontà è stata quella di girare un film di genere con un approccio intimista, europeo. Una fantascienza umanista dove
la messa in scena è realistica e la rappresentazione del futuro il più naturalistica possibile. Anche il notevole impiego di effetti
visivi è invisibile, totalmente al servizio della storia.
La narrazione è in una soggettiva rigorosa che punta sul minimalismo del racconto, senza didascalie. La stessa carenza di
dialoghi e di spiegazioni introduttive è un modo per rimanere legati alle immagini e alle loro emozioni, cercando di evitare le
convenzioni del racconto cinematografico. Lo spettatore viene accompagnato a scoprire le regole del ‘mondo’ in cui si
muovono i protagonisti insieme a loro. Attraverso lo sguardo di due immigrati si vogliono raccontare i temi più attuali legati al
futuro dell’Unione Europea e alla sostenibilità delle economie e delle genti.
È ovvio, infatti, che il genere fantascientifico ci abbia permesso di parlare in modo metaforico di quello che oggi avviene sotto
gli occhi di tutti. Lo stesso concetto di sostenibilità, che è attualmente percepito dal pensiero comune come un valore
necessario, lo abbiamo riconsiderato cercando di immaginare cosa succederebbe se fosse portato alle estreme
conseguenze. Index Zero non vuole essere una rappresentazione distopica del futuro, ma una proiezione realistica del nostro presente
distopico.

NOTE DI PRODUZIONE
Index Zero è il primo film di fantascienza italiana con ambizione internazionale dai tempi di Nirvana di Gabriele Salvatores. Il
film è stato girato in sette settimane a Sofia, in Bulgaria, mentre i casting degli attori sono stati tenuti a Londra. La lingua
originale è l’inglese.

Lorenzo Sportiello è un filmmaker della nuova generazione, abituato ad auto-prodursi. In questo film, sia per esigenze
creative sia di budget, ha co-firmato la sceneggiatura, le musiche e gli effetti visivi. Infatti, Giuseppe Gargiulo ha finanziato le
riprese del film per la CVC ma, finiti i fondi per la post-produzione, ha abbandonato il film incompleto. Dopo dei difficili giorni
di set in cui la troupe ha dato il massimo con risultati inaspettati, non era il momento di mollare. Così lo stesso Lorenzo
Sportiello ha prodotto la post-produzione con il generoso aiuto di The Shift per la modellazione 3D, Mix Studio per la postproduzione audio e Grande Mela per quella video. Nonostante tutto, grazie all’ostinazione e al talento di tutte le persone
coinvolte, il film è stato terminato senza compromessi e con il massimo della qualità possibile.

L’ambizione produttiva è stata quella di lavorare ad un film indipendente, internazionale, con un budget decisamente
contenuto rispetto ai production value messi in scena. L’obiettivo è stato raggiunto grazie a un cast tecnico/artistico di alto
livello, formato da alcuni tra i migliori talenti della nuova generazione del cinema italiano. L’età media del cast è di 35 anni.
Quasi tutti i capi reparto, infatti, sono amici da anni e hanno frequentato, più o meno nello stesso periodo, il Centro
Sperimentale di Cinematografia.

IL REGISTA
Lorenzo Sportiello nasce a Bari nel 1978 e vive e lavora a Roma, dove si è laureato in Scienze della Comunicazione e
diplomato in regia cinematografica al Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. Come sceneggiatore, ha frequentato workshop
internazionali presso la Tish School of the Arts della New York University e il Puglia Experience 2010 tenuto presso l’Apulia
Film Commission.

Appena diplomato si concentra su videoclip e pubblicità. Tra i suoi clienti ci sono MTV, RAI, SKY, EMI recordings, Warner
bros, Microsoft, BMW. Nel 2009 il suo promo TOIVE per Vadislav Delay viene pubblicato su varie riviste internazionali tra cui il
The New Yorker e Shots, ottenendo ottime recensioni su numerosissimi blog. Nel 2008 gli viene commissionata da MTV
WANNABE A FILMMAKER, che diventa la prima serie web italiana.

Tra il 2005 e il 2008 ha diretto sette cortometraggi, vantando la partecipazione ai principali festival internazionali tra cui il Los
Angeles Film Festival, il Taormina International Film Festival, il Karlovy Vary International FilmFestival, il Genova Film Festival, il

GLI ATTORI
SIMON MERRELLS Lui è KURT. Attore inglese di lunga esperienza teatrale. Dopo alcune apparizioni cinematografiche, nel 2012 arriva una parte
importante nel remake WOLFMAN interpretando Ben Talbot al fianco di Anthony Hopkins e Benicio del Toro. Nel 2013 la
consacrazione con la parte di Marco Licinio Crasso, antagonista principale dell’ultima stagione di SPARTACUS. Ruolo che lo
consacra a una fama internazionale. Nel 2014 interpreta un ruolo principale nella serie TOMORROW PEOPLE. !
ANA ULARU È la protagonista femminile. Rumena, ha iniziato a recitare all’età di nove anni nel thriller di Claude-Michel Rome MEURTRES
PAR PROCURATION. Da allora ha lavorato in più di 20 film tra cui LOST AND FOUND e TURKEY GIRL di Cristian Mungiu, e
YOUTH WITHOUT YOUTH di Francis Ford Coppola. Nel 2012, Ana riceve il Shooting Star Award alla Berlinale con il film
OUTBOUND.

Attrice slovacca, si trasferisce in Italia dove intraprende una carriera da attrice di successo in numerose fiction televisive. Al
cinema ottiene numerosi premi e nomination, tra cui il David di Donatello e il Golden Globe. Ad Annency viene premiata
come migliore attrice per il film RIPARO di Marco S. Puccioni.
SYNOPSIS
In the near future Kurt (SM) and Eve(AU) were born over the Great Wall of the United States of Europe, in the abandoned
lands after the global economic crisis laid waste to them. Eve is pregnant ,and in order to provide a future for their child ,they
decide to enter Europe illegally.
They face a long and desperate journey through the dry lands ending in a claustrophobic tunnel secretly dug under the Great
Barrier.They get through only only to be captured by the waiting Immigration police.They are confined to a Temporary
Detention Centre where they are traumatically forced to separate .
In the United States of Europe an 'Index of Sustainability' is imposed on every citizen, calculated on their potential
productivity and well being. Practically, it divides them in classes, deciding who can survive and who will die.
According to the Index system,Kurt is "potentially sustainable",with a chance to achieve the 'Index Zero' which will confirm
him as a European citizen. Eve however,is considered unsustainable,and awaits deportation beyond the borders.
In the new Europe natural pregnancy is outlawed and artificial wombs are used to give women 9 months extra productivity.
Incarcerated and seemingly powerless,Kurt decides not to bow to events. He will not give up on her.

SHORT SYNOPSIS
In the near future, KURT and EVE were born over the United States of Europe barrier, in the abandoned lands after the great
global economic crisis. She is pregnant and, in order to provide a future for their child, they try to enter Europe illegally. In this
world, an 'Index of Sustainability' is given to every citizen, calculated on their personal productivity and wellbeing. Here a
pregnant woman is considered ‘not sustainable’ and she must to be expelled.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES
My desire was to make a sci-fi movie with an authorial approach, European. For this reason, the mise en scene is realistic,
making the representation of the future as natural as possible. A humanist science fiction focused on the character's drama.
I chose a first person storytelling format avoiding unnecessary exposition,so the viewer discovers the rules of our world
along with the characters. The lack of dialogue or background story is an attempt to preserve the immediacy and humanity
of the story with the complex rules of the imagined world filtering through the sub plot.
The Europe Union nowadays, indeed, is struggling with what is good for the economy instead of people's welfare.
Sustainability is perceived in our culture as of prime value, becoming more and more like a mantra to justify the loss of
people’s rights. The rules of INDEX ZERO have a cold reasonableness after all, but how far this can go? Even the United
States of Europe seems something inevitable whether people want it or not.
Index Zero does not want to be a representation of a dystopian future, but a realistic projection of our dystopian present.

PRODUCTION NOTES
Index Zero was shot in seven weeks in Sofia, Bulgaria. The casting was held in London. The original language is English.
Lorenzo Sportiello is a filmmaker of the new generation, independent, accustomed to be self-produced. In this film, he cowrote the screenplay, the soundtrack and the visual effects for both creative and budget needs.
In fact, CVC has financed the shooting of the film, but funds dried up for post-production. At this point, the film was left
incomplete. After the difficult days on the set where the crew had given everything with unexpected problems arising, it
wasn't time to give up. Thus, Lorenzo Sportiello produced the post-production with the generous help of The Shift for 3D
modeling, Mix Studio for audio post-production and the Grande Mela for the color correction. Despite all, thanks to the
stubbornness and talent of all involved, the film was completed without compromise and with the highest quality possible.
The ambition was to work on an independent and international film, with a low budget but high production values. The goal
has been achieved thanks to an high level cast and crew, formed by some of the best talents of the new generation of Italian
cinema. The average age of the cast is 35 years old. Almost all, in fact, have been friends for years and have attended the
National Film School together.
Index Zero has been declared of cultural interest by the Italian Ministry of Culture MIBAC.

DIRECTOR
Lorenzo Sportiello was born in 1978 in Italy, where he had a degree in film directing at the National Film School Centro
Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Cinecittà. As a writer, he attended international workshops at the Tisch School of the Arts
at New York University and at the Apulia Film Commission in Italy.
Newly graduated, he focuses on music videos and commercials. His clients includes MTV, SKY, EMI Recordings, Warner
Bros, Microsoft, BMW. In 2009 his promo TOIVE for Vladislav Delay is published in various international magazines including
The New Yorker and Shots. In 2008 he was commissioned WANNABE A FILMMAKER by MTV Italy, which becomes the first
Italian web series.
Between 2005 and 2008 he directed seven short films, boasting participation in major international festivals including the Los
Angeles Film Festival, the Taormina International Film Festival, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, the Genova Film
Festival, the Next Reel Film Festival in Singapore.
In 2006 he was in competition at the 63rd Mostra del Cinema di Venezia with the short film FIB1477.
In 2009, his graduation short film STAIN-BLOOD EYES is awarded as Best Film at RIFF.

ACTORS
Simon Merrells
He is KURT. British actor, with a prolific stage career with such with such prestigious organizations as the National Theatre
and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2012, he played in The WOLFMAN with Anthony Hopkins and Benicio del Toro. On
television he became well-known in SPARTACUS:WAR OF THE DAMNED interpreting Marcus Licinius Crassus, the main
antagonist. In 2014, he played a major role in THE TOMORROW PEOPLE.
Ana Ularu
She is the female lead Eve. She started out as a child actor in French television productions. She went on to star in the stage
adaptation of Nabokov’s “Lolita” at age 16 and through that acclaimed performance started a prolific film career, with more
than 25 feature film titles to her name. After graduation from the National University of Film and Drama Studies, in 2012 she
was a Berlinale Shooting Star for Romania. Her most recent endeavours are Susanne Bier’s “Serena”, where she stars
opposite Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, a guest starring role in the Showtime series “The Borgias”, Pinewood
Pictures’ “Camera Trap” and the upcoming thriller “Thursday”. !
Antonia Lísková
Slovak, she moved to Italy where she began a career as a successful actress in numerous television dramas. On the silver
screen, she won numerous awards and nominations including the David di Donatello Awards and the Italian Golden Globe.
She was voted Best Actress for the film SHELTER by Marco S. Puccioni at the Annecy Film Festival.
