La città fu fondata nell’XI secolo A.c dai Piceni, la
leggenda narra che furono guidati da un picchio che ha
poi dato l’appellativo di “Piceno”. La città ha subito
notevoli cambiamenti nel tempo, attraversando diverse
epoche storiche, dai romani ai longobardi, dal medioevo,
all’epoca dei liberi comuni, per poi passare sotto il
dominio dello stato della chiesa nel XV secolo. Conserva
ancora intatte molte testimonianze dell’epoca
romana, medioevale, rinascimentale e della
dominazione pontiﬁcia. Ascoli Piceno ha un
centro storico molto esteso ed è costruito
interamente in travertino locale. Tra le città
più ammirate nel centro Italia per la sua
ricchezza artistica e architettonica, conserva
diverse torri gentilizie e campanarie e per
questo è chiamata città delle cento torri.

The city of Ascoli Piceno was founded in the 11th
century BC by the Piceni population. The legend tells
about a woodpecker showing them the way during
their research of a new territory to live. The name
“Piceno” comes from this legendary woodpecker
(“Picchio” is the Italian word indicating
woodpecker). The city has been subjected to many
changes over the centuries, passing through diﬀerent
historical periods: from the Romans to the Longobards’
dominations, then the Middle Ages, the period of the free
Municipalities, and the annexation to the Papal States in
the 15th century. The city still preserves a lot of
historical and artistic evidences of its great past, mostly
located in its extended city centre, built almost entirely
with local travertine. Ascoli is one of the most admired
cities of the central part of the Italy, thanks to its artistic
and architectural treasures. It is commonly known as
the city of “The one hundred towers”, as a
consequence of the noble towers and the bell
oones which rise in its historical city centre.
