CURRICULUM VITAE AC STUDIORUM
Barbara Bettoni graduated in law in the Academic Year 1997/98 at the Faculty of Law of the University of
Brescia. She discussed a thesis in Economic History entitled "Glass bead manufacturing in the Eighteenth
century Venice" (original in Italian "La manifattura veneziana delle perle di vetro nel XVIII secolo",
supervisor Prof. C.M Belfanti). Between March 2000 and December 2002 she attended a PhD course in
Economic and Social history at the Bocconi University in Milan. In April 2003 she got the PhD defending a
dissertation upon the theme "Consumer patterns and life style of well-to-do families in Brescia during the
Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries" (original in Italian "Stili di vita nelle famiglie agiate bresciane
dell’età moderna", tutor Prof. C.M. Belfanti, Prof. M.A. Romani, Prof. G. Labrot, coordinator Prof. M.
Cattini). In 2004/05 she obtained a Postdoctoral fellowship at the Dipartimento di Studi Sociali of the
University of Brescia (tutor Prof. C.M. Belfanti). In 2006 she was assistant researcher at the same
Department within the research framework "Buttons and zips in Palazzolo sull’Oglio between the
Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries: inventions, machines and patents" (scientific coordinator Prof. C.M.
Belfanti). Since 2007 she has been assistant professor in Economic History at the Department of Social
Studies (now of Economics and Management) of the University of Brescia.
Her main research interests are (1) material culture, consumer models and lifestyle in Northern Italy
between the Sixteenth and Nineteenth century, (2) fashion and innovation in button and buckle
manufacturing in Italy from Renaissance up to the Twentieth century, (3) supply and demand of metal
objects for domestic and personal use in Northern Italy between the Seventeenth and Nineteenth century,
(4) patents, innovation and design in the industrialization process, (5) origins of “bijouterie” and “fashion
jewellery” manufacturing in Northern Italy.
Since Academic Year 1999/2000 and, as a connoisseur of the subject, since AY 2002/03 she has cooperated
with the Chair of Economic History at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Brescia. Since November
2010 she has been member of the board of the PhD course in Economic history with administrative seat at
the University of Verona.
