WELCOME TO VOORNE - PUTTEN
It doesn’t matter which direction you’re coming from: whether you’re
headed from the industrial hub in Rotterdam’s Botlek area or whether
you’re driving up from the South West. You can’t miss Voorne-Putten. The
factories will slowly disappear from view and you will be welcomed by a
rural landscape which is varied and also definitely worth a visit.
I grew up in Spijkenisse and I know Voorne-Putten like the back of my
hand. I am happy to introduce you to a few of the amazing sights on our
island during this introduction.
Do you like the beach, water and nature? Then you should definitely visit
the Brielse Lake, the North Sea beaches near Oostvoorne and Rockanje. A
trip to the Quackstrand is also bound to be a hit.
There are quite a few water sport activities available for active visitors.
However, why not kick back and relax at the beach. You could also visit
one of the restaurants or cafés on the waterfront. The area is also ideal for
children during the summer.
I definitely recommend ‘Aquapark Splash’ on the Quackstrand! Are you a
nature enthusiast? Why not explore the woods and dunes near Rockanje,
Oostvoorne and Hellevoetsluis by bike or on foot. The Bernisse park is also

Brielle, which was called Den Briel in older days,
is a historical fortified town that owes its fame
to the fact is was captured by the Sea Beggars
on April 1st 1572: an event still celebrated most
enthusiastically each year. The ancient and
monumental St. Catharine’s Church, founded in
1417, has witnessed many centuries of additions
and new developments that go with a garrison
town, including the Military Prison and the
Guardhouse. Brielle is one historical monument,
boasting some 400 architectural monuments,
varying from splendid mansions to modest
dwellings. A walk on the impressive, still fully
intact ramparts, with their superb wooden
post-mill ‘t Vliegend Hert, will lead you through
hundreds of years of history.
The Historical Museum of Brielle houses
interesting exhibitions on the history of Brielle
and Voorne-Putten. And still, Brielle is also very
much a town that has kept up with the times.
There are lots of pubs, restaurants and shops,
and a range of good hotels, guesthouses, and
camping sites.
Walking tours are available at the local tourist
office (VVV).
In the summer one can also opt for a guided
city walk. The members of the Guide Group
Brielle will lead you through the city of Brielle
and tell you many interesting facts and
anecdotes.

Sint-Catharijnekerk
The Sint-Catharijnekerk, also known as Brielle’s
Cathedral is one of the city’s most recognizable
landmarks. Work started on the church in the
13th century and at the time it was supposed
to be the biggest church in the Netherlands.
However, a fire and lack of funds meant that
the church was never completely finished. The
statues and altars were destroyed and looted

The Stenen Baak was built by Payese, a master

It replaced earlier wooden lighthouses which
had been destroyed by fire. The lighthouse
was allocated a military function within Brielle’s
defences in the 18th and 19th centuries. The
lighthouse was fully restored in 2004 and it is

EVENTS IN BRIELLE
APRIL 1st
April 1st is for many people still the date for jokes and pranks. But the first day of April is also important to Dutchmen
for another reason. On that day, 440 years ago, in the year 1572, the Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) conquered the city
of Den Briel from the Spaniards.
The Spanish army commander Alva tasted defeat. Because of the conquest by the Sea Beggars, Brielle is still turned
upside down every year on April 1st. The capture is rehashed and the Spaniards are chased out of the city again, but
now amid great public interest.
In Brielle (formerly Den Briel) the inhabitants look forward to April 1st the
whole year. Historical costumes are made and the male population grows
beards and moustaches. The April 1st Association is the driving force
behind the festivities. This association owns a real, self-built Beggars’ ship,
the ‘Prince Admirael’, with which lifelike manoeuvres are carried out and
canons are fired. There is even a temporary shop for making the clothes,
where historical clothing can be bought between the middle of February
until just before April 1st. This shop, named ‘De Geuzennaald’, is run by a
group of volunteers, who are busy making clothing all winter.
The most important part of the event is a large-scale open-air performance,
that is carried out by the members of the April 1st Association. This
12
performance is called ‘For the key of the city’. During the performance the
Sea Beggars rattle the city gate, after which they chase the Spaniards out
of the city. The dressed-up inhabitants of the city form the live setting.
The atmosphere in the city is also determined by street groups. These are
groups of people in historical clothes that portray a theme on various set
locations in the city. In addition to these groups, many inhabitants dress
up individually and they move through the city as burghers.
The town centre is filled with stalls where all sorts of merchandise are
offered for sale. The special atmosphere that arises because of all of these
activities is typical for Brielle on April 1st. Celebration, atmosphere and
history go hand-in-hand on that day.
BRIELLE BLUES 27 july 2014
The 23rd edition of the free Blues festival!

three large stages near bars and cafés at various
locations within the fortified town of Brielle:
Turfkade, Maarland and Markt. Brielle Blues will
continue into the early hours and there is a pub
crawl with live performances by bands in various
bars and cafés. An afternoon and evening full of
Blues equals a great atmosphere, good bands
and fantastic company.
BUSTLING BRIELLE 30 august 2014
Bustling Brielle is to be organised for the 9th time on Saturday 30 th August.
This is always a great event for and organised by people from Brielle.
Naturally, visitors from outside the area are welcome to come and enjoy
themselves too. The activities will be held between 11.00 and 17.00 hours.
A full and varied program which features port activities, presentations by
local clubs, information about living in Brielle, a farmers market, buskers,
old agricultural vehicles, a market featuring local products, an old timer
show, music and art in the Catharijnekerk and lots of other great activities
are all part of this bustling day. The program will end around 17.00 hours.
However, Brielle wouldn’t be Brielle if the party didn’t continue into the
evening. One of the many bars and cafés in the town offer the ideal way
to end the day or night. Whether you feel like some music, just relaxing,
having a bite to eat or having a few cold ones on one of the many outdoor
patios. You will definitely find what you need in Brielle.
Bustling Brielle is the ideal occasion to take some time and discover what
Brielle has to offer. Seeing, tasting and experiencing are Brielle’s motto for
a reason. The organisation would like to wish everyone a wonderful day
and we hope that you will enjoy the amazing program!

peace and quiet. The beaches, woods and
dunes are wonderful for cycling, walking or

the most important nature areas in Western
Europe based on its unique flora and fauna.
All information about this wonderful area is
available at visitor’s centre Tenellaplas.
Near this centre there is the open-air museum

MUSEUMS AND SIGHTS
Open-air Museum De Duinhuisjes
Open-air Museum De Duinhuisjes consists of four
original dune farmhouses and their outbuildings,
dating back to the period between 1850 and
1910. Three dune houses were moved from the
dunes of Voorne to the museum grounds by the
Historical Society, where they were re-erected
into their original state. The most recent house
were already in the museum grounds. The small
dwellings are decorated in the style that was
common around 1900, with the exception of the
house Duinzoom that accommodates the
themed exhibitions.
Museum In den Halven Maen
Museum In den Halven Maen is the smallest
museum on Voorne-Putten (South Holland).
It displays an array of objects, including
groceries, tins, tobacco goods, hats and clothing
from the past.
The collection is housed in a grocery shop, small
pub, square, hat attic and an old-fashioned,
traditional Dutch sweetshop.
Oldtimermuseum De Rijke,
Oostvoorne
The museum has no less than 200 vintage cars,
each one a very valuable example, collected and
restored by Mr. de Rijke over a period of
40 years. Apart from being valuable, the
collection of cars, lorries and motorbikes is
definitely also unique.
The oldest car dates back to 1904.
The museum is also home to a 800 piece
miniature model collection of all models
produced by Ford in 100 years. If you are
interested in the development of the
automobile, a visit to the Oldtimer Museum is
something you should not leave out.

HELLEVOETSLUIS
Hellevoetsluis is not only an interesting fortified
town, but also the former homeport of the
Dutch navy. Celebrated naval heroes connected
with this old port are De Ruyter, Tromp and
Piet Heyn, who left their unique mark on Dutch
history. Here, too, the fortifications are still in
excellent order. Hellevoetsluis is one of the
major water sports centres in the Netherlands.
Within the city’s fortified walls a number of
interesting museums can be found, e.g. the
Museum Gesigt van ‘t Dok,
the National Fire fighting Museum, and the
local historical museum Stadsmuseum.
The ancient harbour, Koopvaardijhaven, offers
anchorage to the fully furnished museum
lightship Noord Hinder and in the port inside
the citadel you will find the former ramship
de Buffel. The gallery of the flourmill De Hoop
offers the visitor a spectacular view of the
city, its fortifications and the grand waters of
the estuary Haringvliet. There are snug pubs
and excellent restaurants, but Hellevoetsluis
also boasts a range of interesting boutiques
and shops, e.g. in the shopping centre Het
Evertsenplein, Rijkstraatweg, De Struytse
Hoeck, built on top of the old canal Kanaal door
Voorne, the former route between the sea and
Rotterdam.

the 17th century. Its primary purpose was to
strengthen the position of the Dutch when
This process was intensified once the naval port
was moved to Den Helder in the 1930s. The
navy retained a presence in the area until the
1960s and provided a mine sweeping service.
The municipalities of Hellevoetsluis, NieuwHelvoet and Nieuwenhoorn were merged to
create one municipality in 1960. Since that time
the municipality has focussed on renovation
and expanding the fortified city through the
creation of new builds on the west side of
the Large Dock, through the creation of flats
near the Struytse Hoeck shopping centre and
through the renovation of the historic bunkers
littered throughout the citadel.
17
Ramship HMS Buffel
HMS Buffel was originally a ram ship. This
means that the front of the ship extends
further forward than in most ships and that it is
reinforced. This is the ram. The tower is located
in the middle of the ship and can be rotated.
This was useful for the canon located on it as it
meant that they were not attached and could
be pointed in the desired direction.
The HMS Buffel was built between 1867 and
1868. The ship’s purpose was to defend the
Dutch coast.
Lodging ship
The ship was turned into a lodging ship after
seventeen years of active service. The canons
were removed and the ship was fitted with
berths for 350 men. The ship was berthed in
Hellevoetsluis, Den Helder and Amsterdam
between 1896 and 1974.
Museum ship
The ship was purchased by the municipality
of Rotterdam in 1973. The goal was to create
a museum. The ship was fully restored to its
original state. It has now been visited by more
than 3.5 million people. The ship returned to
Hellevoetsluis in October 2013 and can now be
visited in the harbour near the dry dock
Droogdok Jan Blanken
Jan Blanken developed plans to modernise
the naval settlement in Hellevoetsluis in 1787.
The most far-reaching plans are for the dry
docks which are deemed extremely effective
when it comes to the repair, maintenance and
construction of ships. We recommend a visit to
the visitors centre to get an idea of Jan Blanken’s
dry docks and the fortified city of Hellevoetsluis.
The visitors centre is located inside the fortified
city walls.
The National Fire Service Museum
The National Fire Service Museum in
Hellevoetsluis is the beating heart of fire service
history. Using the many objects that have
survived, a magnificent picture of the changes
in the fire service during the past centuries is
outlined. The main attraction is the fantastic
collection of old fire engines, with handoperated pumps to the high pressure water
mist pumps.

MUSEUMS AND SIGHTS
Lightship 12Noord Hinder
A lightship can be described as a floating
lighthouse and its purpose is to enable seafarers
to determine their position at sea accurately,
even at night, if it is foggy and there is poor
visibility. The light that it projected, which has
its very own ‘character’, is visible at a great
distance in the dark. When there is mist and
poor visibility, a foghorn blasts penetrating
sound signals. A radio beacon also transmits a
radio signal in Morse code, which enables ships
equipped with a direction finder to determine
the position of the lightship.
On the nautical maps that are used on board
ships, the lightships, as well as lighthouses and
other landmarks, including (nun) buoys and
floats, are all marked with their own specific
features.
Prinsehuis
This house was built in the middle of the
seventeenth century as a home for the customs
and excise officer and was also the lodgings
of the States of Holland and West Friesland.
The council’s job was to supervise, construct,
maintain and exploit the citadel’s port.
The customs and excise officer appointed
by the council was permanently on site. He
lived in the house, used it as his offices and
was responsible for collecting the taxes.

The City Museum displays everyday artifacts
from daily life in Hellevoetsluis in the past two
centuries.
Some relate to Hellevoetsluis’s past, others,
that are divided into theme groups, concern
agriculture, toys, the smithy, education,
occupations and shipping.
Corn mill “De Hoop”
“De Hoop”, which is stone tower mill, was built
in 1801. Flour carts could pass under the crown
wheel for loading or unloading. This passage
was restored to its former glory during the mill’s
full restoration in 1961 and 1962. The miller and
his partner lived on the ground floor and the
first floor.
You can visit the mill during the high season,
which starts on National Mill Day and ends with
Open Monumentendag in September. The mill
is open every Saturday and Sunday between
12.00 and 16.00 hours and when the blue
pennant is out or if you make an appointment.
The Visitors centre is open on Saturdays and

FORT DAYS
15-17 august 2014
The Fort Days in Hellevoetsluis: A weekend
which offers something for everyone. The annual
Fort Days in Hellevoetsluis are traditionally held
in the month of August. Watch the old fortified
city transform into a bustling mass. The steam
machines with their hissing, whistling and
rumbling set the scene for the atmosphere
within the old fortified city walls. A large fair, arts
and crafts market, exhibitions and so much more
complete the steam event within the fortified
city walls. Tens of thousands of people will enjoy
themselves against the atmospheric décor of the
old fort. The Fort Days traditionally last 3 days.
Fridays is all about steam whilst all other
disciplines are featured on Saturday and Sunday.
The float show on the Haringvliet will take
place on Saturday night in accordance with
Hellevoetsluis’ traditions. An amazing fireworks
show will be held directly afterwards.

WALLENPOP
WALLENPOP has quite a history. One
of the things which make Wallenpop
so characteristic is the combination of
performances by national and international
top acts and various local bands. The festival
was first held in 1978. However, the festival
stopped in 1981. Stichting Cultuuroverleg
Hellevoetsluis decided to get things going
again in 1996; Wallenpop (2.0). The new
Wallenpop organisation can look back on a
successful, uninterrupted series of 17 festivals
up till 2013. The festival has managed to
showcase famous bands like Kane, Racoon
and Direct before they hit the big time.
The 3rd edition of Wallenpop (3.0) will be
held at the new site and will use the new
formula for the third year running. This
new formula differs due to the unique
collaboration with Theater Twee Hondjes.
The theatre will present its own program in
addition to the usual wallenpop program.

SPIJKENISSE
Spijkenisse is a young city with nearly 74,000
residents , that has a central function on the
island of Voorne - Putten . It is a city of extremes
. On one side you can take the subway to the
heart of Rotterdam. You will be there in an
instant. On the other hand there are beautiful
polders, picturesque towns and the North Sea
Beach. Spijkenisse is definitely a city worth
exploring. Whatever the weather, Spijkenisse
has something to do for everyone. The shops
have a regional scope, especially the shops
in the new centre. They attract many buyers
from out of town. There are nice restaurants, a
cinema, sidewalk theatre, a museum house in
the sixties style and a pool. Several party boats
are in the harbour of Spijkenisse berth. From
here the ships sail to Dordrecht, Schoonhoven,
Gouda, Rotterdam and Brielle. With a water taxi
you will be in Rotterdam in half an hour. The
electric- powered whisper boat, the IJsvogel
sails from de old part of Spijkenisse through the
polders surrounding the city. It’s an incredibly
beautiful part of the Netherlands. This sail ends
at the vineyard Agthusen where you can stroll
through the vineyard or taste the produced
wine.
26
HISTORY OF SPIJKENISSE
Spijkenisse’s location is a site which has
been inhabited for a long period of time.
Archaeological investigations have proved that
the first traces of people living in the mouth of
the Maas date back approximately 10,000 years.
At that time the area was inhabited by fishers
(sturgeon catchers) and hunters who lived in
the swampy area which is now Spijkenisse.
The medieval village church is the oldest
building in Spijkenisse.
The name Spickenisse was first recorded in 1231.
The town’s name literally means pointy nose.
Boerderij in de IJzertijd
This refers to its location as a narrow stretch of
land on the banks of the river.
Spijkenisse was originally a farming and fishing
community at a creek in the Old Maas. A
residential dike, now the Voorstraat, gradually
formed on the northern bank. The houses, fields
and a stone church nearby became the village’s
centre. The medieval Old Church and the
Market Square still exist and are now deemed
sites of interest. This is also the case for the mill
at Noordeinde.
The village was hit by a number of floods
in the 16th century. In the 17th and 18th
centuries Spijkenisse suffered a number of
fires. These disasters hampered the prosperity
and economic growth of the area. The Lord of
Putten controlled the area. The family’s coat of
arms is currently used as the city’s coat of arms.
In 1459, the fiefdom of Putten - which included
Spijkenisse - was transferred to Philip of
Burgundy. In 1581 the area came under control
from Voorne-Putten. The population only

KITE FESTIVAL
22 june 2014
The kite festival is a family event with kites and outdoor fun. This is the seventh time that this event will
be held, more and more visitors flock to the festival every year. Last year, nearly 5,000 people visited
this event.
The event is held at the Maasboulevard in Spijkenisse. This is a great site for events on the old Maas.
This area is usually used as esplanade for walks near the river. Lots of people, most of them children,
bring their own kites with them and fly them during the festival. Not just fun to do but also great to see!

parts of the beach are guarded and patrolled by
the rescue brigade. The Ouddorp beach is not
just loved by both local and international sunworshippers, but also by wind- and water sports
lovers. Cyclists can enjoy beautiful wide views
from the many cycle paths and country lanes.
The characteristic landscape is very diverse. The
many benches and picnic tables are not just for
resting, but also for enjoying the surroundings.
A variety of catering facilities can be found
spread around the area. Ouddorp doesn’t just
have a great deal on offer for beach fanatics, but
also for those who enjoy pleasure boats. Boats

sports enthusiasts like anglers, canoers and

GOEDEREEDE
The centre of Goedereede itself is already worth
visiting. The church and the freestanding tower,
the equine stocks, with which the horses were
shoed, the narrow streets, the beautiful, old
buildings on the Market and the terraces define
this very picturesque little town. Goedereede
is therefore a conservation area. Goedereede
is dominated by the tower, built between
1467 and 1512 that boasts a museum with old
agricultural, fishing industry and cargo freight
related objects. The tower itself offers beautiful
views across Goedereede and the surrounding
areas. The carillon and its bells can also be
visited.

MIDDELHARNIS
SOMMELSDIJK
Middelharnis, is situated in the middle of
the island and twinned with the village
of Sommelsdijk. Whereas they are now
firmly linked together, they used to have
a different character. Middelharnis was
dependent on the fishing industry and
Sommelsdijk on agriculture. Middelharnis
has a cosy and special shopping centre,
‘D’n Diek’, just a little bit further on you
will enter the village of Sommelsdijk, with
a regional museum in the Kerkstraat. This
regional museum displays objects from

being an old corn-chandler’s shop. You
will recognise the agricultural character of
the village when you take a stroll through
Sommelsdijk. There are still various barns in
the middle of the village.
DIRKSLAND
Dirksland has a very pleasant village centre,
with a late gothic church dating back to

Visitors who enjoy seeing beautiful, flowery

Hellegatsplaten
An area, cut

creeks, lakes and
ponds, created
by the closing off
the former estuary Krammer-Volkerak. Before
it was closed off the bottom was salty. The
sandbanks only fell dry with low tide. After it
was closed off the water level remained fairly
stable and as a result part of the Hellegatsplaten
fell dry the whole year. The salt water turned
into fresh water.
OOSTFLAKKEE
Oostflakkee is the most easterly district of the
South Holland Island of Goeree-Overflakkee.
Oostflakkee consists of four villages: OudeTonge, Ooltgensplaat, Den Bommel and
Achthuizen and two communities: Langstraat
and Zuidzijde. Based on its total surface area
of 10.764 hectares, Oostflakkee is one of the
largest districts in South Holland. However, its
total population of 10.407 people indicated it’s
actually one of the smaller districts.
OUDE-TONGE
Oude-Tonge on the river Krammer was the
most-flood stricken district during the floods of
1953. The impressive graveyard in a part of the
dike, near the harbour, reminds us of this very
sad event. Over the years the former Zeedijk
has grown into a fantastic recreational resort.
Once you have arrived in Oude Tonge, a visit to
the old town hall is an absolute must.
DEN BOMMEL
Den Bommel is situated on the Haringvliet and
has developed into a water sports centre. Den
Bommel has a mill called the Bommelaer (1735).
OOLTGENSPLAAT
The waterway from Rotterdam to Antwerp
has also made Ooltgensplaat very easily
accessible. It used to be a fortified town in

MUSEA GOEREE-OVERFLAKKEE
Expo Haringvliet
Regional Museum Goeree-Overflakkee
The Regional Museum Goeree-Overflakkee is
located in a 17th century street in the centre
of the village of Sommelsdijk. The museum
is accommodated in five small step-gabled
houses. The museum is divided into 19 sections.
In a clear and sometimes surprising manner
each section tells a story, connected with a part
of history of the South Holland island GoereeOverflakkee.
The history of Goeree-Overflakkee goes back to
the first century AD. The fact that shipping and
fishing were important means of subsistence
for the population is illustrated by means of
model ships, flags and fishing attributes. A
photographic report shows the devastation and
the recovery of the island following the 1953
flood disaster. Other subjects covered in the
museum are traditional costume, crafts, an old
school class and a shop.
38
Museum R.T.M. Ouddorp
In order to keep the memory of one of the
biggest Dutch regional tramway companies
alive, the Tramweg Stichting (Tramway
Association) purchased a collection of steam
tram equipment from the RTM (Rotterdam
Tramweg Maatschappij) in 1965 and at a later
date immovable goods and rolling stock.
In 1989, the largely restored RTM equipment
was relocated to Ouddorp, where the first
section (2 km) of the new tram line was
opened in 1990. To keep the memory of the
235 kilometres of the RTM alive, there is a
6-kilometre long stretch on which only NV.RTM
rolling stock is used.
On the basis of unique photos, simplified maps,
scale models and original film material, the
Haringvliet exposition provides an impression of
how the locks were built and operate. These locks
can rightfully be called the biggest water tap in
the Netherlands. The exhibition also provides
a picture of “de Kier”. This refers to the decision
taken in May 2000 to open the Haringvliet locks
for almost the whole year, so that all kinds of fish,
such as salmon, sea trout and eel could enter the
Haringvliet again freely. As a result, shrimps and
smelt will also be found in the Haringvliet again.
In this way, there is a gradual transition between
freshwater and saltwater, which will have a positive
impact on nature in the Haringvliet. The locks will
only be fully closed in case of a storm surge or low
water.During your visit, there is also an opportunity
to view the subterranean building works and one
of the enormous engine rooms, to get an idea
of the massive scale of the complex. You will be
accompanied throughout by an experienced
guide.

NATURE
VOORNE-PUTTEN-ROZENBURG
SLIKKEN VAN VOORNE
(Voorne Mud Flats)
The Slikken van Voorne area is situated to the
west of Oostvoorne. This tidal area has an
eventful history and is still constantly changing.
In the Maas estuary channels, sand flats and
dunes were formed in the past. Everything
was constantly changing, during storms dunes
would break up, new beaches would be formed
and channels would move. During the last
century large-scale projects were carried out off
the coast of Voorne. The Maas was dammed off,
the Maasvlakte was reclaimed, the sea-defense
dunes were widened and raised to the required
minimum safe height. As a result the natural
dynamics largely disappeared from this area. But
nature had a surprise in store. On the south side
of the Maasvlakte in the former Maas estuary a
new dynamic coastal landscape was created
where new channels and sand flats are being
formed as a result of tidal activity. Also on the
beach at Oostvoorne new dunes are again being
formed.
As a result of the natural development, many
coastal plants have settled here, including sea
aster, sea milkwort, sea poa, sea-blite and salt
sandspurry. In the new dunes grows the beautiful
blue sea holly. The mud-flat-like ground is home
to many small animals which are an important
source of food for the oystercatcher, dunlin,
curlew and redshank. These days many little
egrets and spoonbills are spotted searching for
food. Peregrines, short-eared owls, harriers and
ospreys hunt there. At low tide, on the sand
flats between Goeree and Voorne, more than
40 seals can regularly be seen resting. The tidal
area is freely accessible along the edges. On the
Maasvlakte an observation post has been set up,
and the 15-kilometre long walking route from
Oostvoorne to the bird-watching hut De Bonte
Piet allows you to enjoy the Slikken van Voorne
to the fullest.

GROENE STRAND
The Groene Strand (Green Beach), an old sandbank with valleys and scrub,
has been extended over the last few years with a number of bird islands on
the edge of the Oostvoorne lake. In the past the Groene Strand consisted
of a normal beach and a sandbank, where the Maas flowed into the sea.
The Maas was dammed off with two dams as a result of which a salt lake
was created. The banks were soon grown over with herbs and shrubs. A
part of the area consists of valleys with unusual flora. On the banks of the
Oostvoorne lake a lagoon has been dug and a few bird islands developed
where one can enjoy the presence of geese, ducks, plovers and brooding
common terns. In the shallow waters of the lagoon egrets and spoonbills
search for food. A walking route has been made through the area with
various bird-watching screens. Dogs are allowed on the lead.
MILDENBURG
The Mildenburg estate lies in the middle of the village of Oostvoorne.
It was developed by the Van Leyden-Van Leeuwen family during the
course of the 18th century. Old maps show a baroque garden with large
straight lanes, a maze and a summer house. In order to make the estate
productive, large sections were in use as coppice wood. An estate as
this required a tremendous amount of maintenance. It is therefore not
surprising that most parts of the baroque garden have disappeared. The
main lane and sections of the other lanes have however remained intact.
An old beech wood with gnarled trees forms the transition from estate
to dune wood. The Mildenburgbos (Mildenburg Woods) – as the estate
is called by the locals - is full of birds, in particular the nuthatch can be
heard loud and clear. Bats have also discovered these woods. In autumn
the Mildenburgbos is full of mushrooms. The 2-kilometre long Wielewaal
route takes you through these woods. Dogs are allowed on a lead.
THE VOORNE DUNES
The Voorne Dunes stretch from Oostvoorne to the Haringvliet. The area is
managed by the South Holland Countryside Association and the Society
for the Preservation of Nature in the Netherlands. The dune area is home
to a large variety of plants and animals thanks to the presence of woods,
moist dune valleys, dry sand hills, shrubs, pools and large dune lakes.
The Voorne Dunes are still quite young compared to the dune areas in the
north of the Netherlands. The oldest Dutch dunes are thousands of years
old but here in Voorne they are only about 900 years young. Due to this
young age the dune sand is still rich in lime. In these calcareous dunes
there is a natural groundwater level, low in summer and high in winter;
as a result there is unusual plant life with an enormous variety of species
which can hardly be found anywhere else in Europe. This lush vegetation
and the pools that are scattered all over the area attract insects, including
butterflies and dragonflies beside many bird species.
The large dune lakes, the Quackjeswater and the Brede Water, are full of
water birds. Colonies of cormorants and spoonbills have settled here. In
autumn the berry-bearing shrubs provide a feast for migrating starlings,
redwings and fieldfares. Birds of prey follow their wake. The scrub and
woods also offer many brooding opportunities for songbirds, birds of prey
and owls. In the northern part of the dunes you may come across large
grazing animals, Iceland ponies and Galloway cattle. These help the South
Holland Countryside Association to keep the dunes open. In the interest of
animal welfare, visitors are urged to refrain from feeding the animals. There
is an extensive network of paths in the dunes, there are facilities available
for exploring the area in a wheelchair and guided tours through the dunes
are offered on a regular basis.
When on a lead, dogs are permitted virtually everywhere in the dune area.
Information about the ecological values and the walking and cycling
facilities can be obtained from the South Holland Countryside Association
visitor centre Tenellaplas.
(Please, see also Tenellaplas visitor centre)
HOLLE MARE AND DERRYVLIET
Holle Mare and Derryvliet to the southwest of Zwartewaal are the remains
of old creeks which used to form an open connection between the river
Maas and the Haringvliet.
These creeks are now beautiful nature areas with winding dykes with
pollard willows, reedy borders and flowery meadows. Harriers hunt above
the reeds and also brood there. The bittern is also found here. It is perhaps
interesting to know that the root vole is also found here. This rare type
of mouse lives in the hardy reeds close to water, it is also an excellent
swimmer. The Boerenzwaluw route (Swallow Route) runs along the Holle
Mare and Derryvliet and is 5 kilometres long.

GOEREE-OVERFLAKKEE
56
KLEISTEE
The Kleistee is a nature area that combines the characteristics of old
man-made landscape and old dune landscape. It is situated to the west
of Ouddorp in an area with relatively high sandy plains. The attention to
ecological values is concentrated on the low vegetation of sandbanks and
meadows. Polypody, lichen and moss are characteristic species of the banks,
and decumbent heath grass, bird’s foot and eyebright are characteristic
species of the meadows. Ouddorp VVV (Tourist Information) provides
information with regard to excursions to the Kleistee. Entrance is via a narrow
(sand) path adjacent to Dirk Doensweg 35 (parking is available in the centre
within 10 minutes walking distance). Dogs are allowed on a lead.
KWADE HOEK
This dynamic tidal area used to be known as ’de kwaaien hoek’ (the
dangerous headland) due to the treacherous current. On the northeastern
side there are mud flats, salt marshes and creeks where salt- tolerant
plants such as sea lavender and real scurvy grass grow. Black-tailed
godwits, avocet and redshank brood here. In the dune area there are
many songbirds. For migratory birds such as the fieldfare the Kwade Hoek
is a good port of call, due to the many berry-bearing shrubs which grow
here. There is a bird-watching hut on the Stellingweg, on the dam. On the
beach side new dunes are being formed. Kwade Hoek is freely accessible
on the roads and paths. The beach is closed between March 15 and July 15
during the breeding season. This is indicated by means of signs.
SCHURVELINGEN
There are two meadows in the reserve, surrounded by wooded banks
and/or strips of woodland. It forms a characteristic part of the so-called
Schurvelingen area, an area with dug-out plots, each of which is surrounded
by sand banks (‘heights’). The lowering of the ground level brought the
groundwater nearer which made the cultivation of crops possible. Hence,
the current grassland management in the reserve is therefore not an old
tradition but it does contribute towards higher ecological values.
WESTDUINEN
The open dune area is situated to the west of Ouddorp along the
Oudelandseweg, Westduinweg, Lange Dijk and Klepperweg. To the
north the Klarebeekweg cuts through the dune area. This road serves
as access road for the naval transmitting station in the area. To the west
the area borders on young open polder land, the eastern section on old
agricultural land with a more closed character (Schurvelingen area).
The good quality of the water in the pools offers space for special
communities in calcareous, slightly brackish water. The natterjack toad
is present in large numbers, whilst the flora includes species such as
soft hornwort and lesser marshwort. From a botanic point of view, the
Westduinen are of great importance, if only because of the presence
of autumn lady’s tresses that can only be found in two places in the
Netherlands. There is a good view of the area from the Westduinweg and
Klarebeekweg.
Ouddorp VVV (Tourist Information) provides information with regard to
excursions to the Westduinen
OUDELANDSE ZEEDIJK EN PREEKHILPOLDER
The Oudelandse Zeedijk nature reserve and the adjacent Preekhilpolder
are situated to the southwest of Ouddorp and can be reached via the
Blomweg or the Ouddorp harbour. The Zeedijk no longer serves as a
seawall since the closing off of Grevelingen. The dyke is now covered
with flowers, including rough clover, knotted clover, daisy, quaking grass,
Bermuda grass and fairy flax. At the bottom of the inside of the dyke you
can enjoy the presence of black bog-rush, common sedge, carnation
sedge and large quantities of western marsh orchid. The semi-parasite
yellow rattle also flourishes here. From the dyke you have a beautiful view
across the Grevelingen and Preekhilpolder, both home to many birds.
The Preekhilpolder consists of botanically valuable grassland and moist
valley vegetation. A section of the polder has been dug out and has
developed into orchid-rich marshland. Notable species here are the
western marsh orchid, adder’s tongue, green-winged orchid, dog’s tail
grass, sweet vernal grass and knotted clover.
Large gaggles of greylag and barnacle geese graze regularly in the
Preekhilpolder and the little egret can also often be admired.
There is a cycle path across part of the Oudelandse Zeedijk, you can walk
freely on the rest of the dykes. Dogs are allowed on a lead. Ouddorp VVV
provides information about excursions to this nature area. Start the walk
on the Blomweg, this is the road parallel to the N57.

58
DE SCHANS
The area De Schans lies to the south of Ouddorp and to the west of
Koudenhoek. De Schans is a 17th century defence work with four
bastions. The Directorate of Public Works and Water Management has
reconstructed De Schans with surplus soil from the construction of the
N57. The main shape with the four bastions, surrounded by a moat can still
be recognised. What is special is that the moat around De Schans contains
brackish water. As a result of the clear and oxygen-rich seepage water
from the Grevelingen the rare prawn can be found here.
GREVELINGEN
The Grevelingen is a former inlet which was closed off from the sea in
connection with the Delta works. Originally the water became increasingly
fresher. Thanks to a culvert in the Brouwersdam the lake has (again)
become salty. This has a direct influence on the nature in the area. The
Grevelingen lake has exceptionally clear water. It is therefore very popular
amongst divers. But there is also a great deal to be seen above the water,
such as the mud flats and sand flats where new nature areas have been
formed. The Hompelvoet is a good example of this. Nature is abundantly
present everywhere on the Grevelingen.
SPRINGERTDUINEN
This unspoilt dune area has become wider since the eighteenth century as
a result of coastal growth. The dunes are overgrown to a large extent with
hawthorn, gorse, elder and bramble. With a bit of luck you could discover
a deer in the scrub. Breeding birds here are the nightingale, whitethroat
and stonechat.
HELLEGATSPLATEN
An area crisscrossed with creeks, small lakes and pools, created by the
closing off of the Krammer-Volkerak. Prior to the closure the bed was salty.
Only at low tide were the sand flats uncovered. Following closure the water
level became fairly stable, as a result of which the Hellegatsplaten were
partially uncovered the whole year through. Furthermore the saltwater
became fresh following the closure. The sand in the seabed quickly lost
its salinity. The Hellegatsplaten are now partially covered with woods. The
lower clayey sections are still salty and specific saltwater plants grow there
such as marsh samphire and sea aster. There is often a strip of this salty soil in
the middle of an area where the ground has lost its salinity. As a result there
are places with saltwater vegetation in the middle of freshwater vegetation.
That is what makes this nature area so special. In order to prevent the whole
area from becoming overgrown with woods, Heck cattle and Fiord horses
have been put there to graze. The Hellegatsplaten are an interesting area
particularly for birds. Special species of breeding bird are: marsh harrier,
bluethroat, avocet, common tern, greylag goose and Mediterranean
gull. There are two bird-watching huts with the appropriate names “De
Zwartkopmeeuw” (the Mediterranean Gull) and “De Kluut” (the Avocet).
These bird-watching huts are accessible via attractive footpaths. In the area
opposite, the “Ventjagersplaten” (also partially accessible) there is also a
bird-watching hut, called “de Visarend” (the Osprey). In 1999 an observation
tower was built close to the recreational beach at Ooltgensplaat. From this
tower one can look out over the entire Hellegatsplaten.
SLIKKEN VAN FLAKKEE (Flakkee Mud Flats)
For this area it was decided to allow nature to take its course. After 35
years it has grown into a (natural) primeval forest, where trees and shrubs
dominate the landscape. Only the path that cuts right across it, is kept
open. It has become an area full of songbirds, including the nightingale,
golden oriole, willow warbler and song thrush. In the central area a large
beach lake has been excavated with shallows where various coastal birds
such as avocets and Kentish plovers have settled.
Furthermore the old creek system has been restored, so that the saltwater
from the Grevelingen can penetrate deep into the area. It was decided
to put cattle out to graze there from the middle of May until the end of
October. As a result, a half-open landscape has been created. This section
of the mud flats is accessible. Four walking routes have been set out. From
a few bird observation points one is able to watch the water birds.
MUD FLATS AT THE SABINA-HENRICAPOLDER
Following the closure of the Krammer Volkerak by the Philipsdam these
mud flats and salt marshes were permanently uncovered. As a result the
vegetation is changing. The salt marshes that previously flooded at very
high tide, are being overgrown with bramble, elder and willow. The salttolerant long-bracted sedge and red bartsia still grow on the mud flats.
But since the water in the Krammer Volkerak is now fresh, the southern
marsh orchid and the marsh helleborine also grow here.

BEACHES
Goeree-Overflakkee and Voorne are increasingly popular with beach enthusiasts. The various types of
beaches of the island make up a very special shoreline with many characteristics. In short: an area where
beach enthusiasts can truly indulge themselves. The beaches of Voorne stretch out over some 15 kilometres,
between the Haringvliet and the Nieuwe Waterweg.
The first beach, the Quackstrand, used to border on the sea until 1970.
However, since the completion of the dam in the Haringvliet in 1970 it
is located in the inner-dike area, offering fresh water for swimming and
playing. The water at the Quackstrand is also shallow a long way out,
which makes it particularly suitable for young children.
Protected by the Haringvlietdam novice surfers, sailors, and canoers can
gain practical experience here. Also, there are (day) parking facilities for car
or caravan near the beach.
The Quackstrand offers a range of facilities to spend a perfect day on
the beach. There are beach pavilions, a rescue team, and ample parking
facilities. If you prefer salt water you can reach the beach via a subway on
the other side of the Haringvlietdam. Here is where the actual North Sea
beach begins. It is considerably wider and perfect for walking and getting
a breath of fresh air.
The Haringvlietdam is the beginning of a beach stretching out over
more than 10 kilometres, via Rockanje all the way to Oostvoorne. Rockanje
is a typical seaside resort and adjusted to welcome holidaymakers.
There are ample facilities for parking, overnight accommodations and a
number of terraces.
The beach of Rockanje can be accessed at two points.
A part of the beach reserved for naturists is found to the north of the
bathing beach.
61
62
Lovers of nature often prefer the beach at Oostvoorne. This beach
offers space, peace and quiet. New dunes are building up and there is
a rough overgrown nature beach. However, this beach is not always
accessible to the public as it is a bird sanctuary beside being a home to
other animal species.
Maasvlakte 2 is directly next to the current Maasvlakte. The
Slufterbeach has almost disappeared. Although never officially intended
for recreation, this beach has become very popular over the course of
time. Reason enough to recreate the lost beach in the construction of the
Maasvlakte 2. Maasvlakte 2 has protection in the West against the North
Sea by a soft sea wall. That automatically means also a new beach. This
so-called soft sea wall is roughly twice as long as before to the existing
Maasvlakte.
Infrastructure and sufficient parking places provide good accessibility by
car and bike. The coastal strip along Maasvlakte 2 is not a beach with a
promenade and extensive catering industry. That does not fit with the
function of the land reclamation as a port and industrial area. It is a place
where people can enjoy the sun, sea, sand, wind and rest. The high waves
off the coast of the Maasvlakte have always had a great appeal on (kite-)
surfers.
E As a result of its location at the top of Goeree-Overflakkee, Ouddorp
is surrounded by many kilometres of beaches that are great, for everyone’s
enjoyment. As there are many beach tents scattered around the area, the
inner man needn’t be neglected. There is ample space for everyone, due
to its expanse. There are also plenty of free and easily accessible car park
facilities. Large parts of the beach are guarded by the rescue brigade. The
Ouddorp beach isn’t only popular with both local and international sun
worshippers, but also with all kinds of wind and water sports enthusiasts,
who manage to find their way to our coastline throughout the year.
The area boasts a number of spots with wide beaches that are ultimately
suitable for kite flying, either with or without a beach buggy. Have you
ever taken a stroll along the tidemark in the evening just before sunset?
It’s a truly spectacular view, very relaxing and good for your health. It
comes highly recommended!
Ouddorp has 2 beaches that have been given the blue flag, namely
Brouwersdam and Westerduinpad.

FUTURELAND!
The Port of Rotterdam Authority launched the construction of the Maasvlakte 2 at the end of 2008. This land reclamation
project in the North Sea is part of the development of the Port of Rotterdam. The new area of the port was opened in
May 2013 and the first container terminals will become operational in 2014. The creation of Maasvlakte 2 has changed
the map of the Netherlands. 240 million cubic meters of sand was required for the construction of Maasvlakte 2. This
sand came from the seabed but also from the existing port. Maasvlakte 2 spans approximately 2,000 hectares and is
approximately the same size as Schipol and Disneyland Paris! People interested in the newest port can visit FutureLand.
FutureLand is a free information centre about Maasvlakte 2.

interactive information centre has welcomed nearly half a million visitors
since it first opened in May 2009. The Royal Dutch Touring Club ANWB has
named FutureLand one of the top five most innovative days out in 2013.
FutureLand is free to visitors of all ages. Experience the most modern port
in Europe!
A SHINING EXAMPLE OF DUTCH ENGINEERING
The construction of Maasvlakte 2 is a shining example of Dutch Engineering.
Contractors Boskalis and Van Oord, united as PUMA, accreted 240 million
cubic meters of sand (imaging filling a large football stadium to the top 160
times) and created a substantial seawall of 3.5 kilometres using 7 million tons
of stone and 20,000 concrete blocks from the old seawall. They also built a
number of kilometres of embankments and created roads and railway lines.
APMT and RWG are currently furnishing their terminals and are working
hard on making sure that the infrastructure on Maasvlakte 2 is properly
connected to the infrastructure for the rest of the port. The construction of
Maasvlakte 2 means that the activity in the Port of Rotterdam will continue
to grow for the next 20 to 25 years. This is great for both international trade
and Rotterdam’s position as the most important port in Europe. It is also
good for employment in the area.
AN IMPOSING PROJECT
Seeing, doing and experiencing things is FutureLand’s starting point. Visitors
of all ages can learn about the expansion of the Port of Rotterdam and all
the associated aspects which make this imposing project on site which
spans 1,800 square meters. Take the wheel at the interactive model of the
new port area and see how and when the land will be reclaimed from the
water. FutureLand is on the borders of the current Maasvlake and offers a
great view of the development of Maasvlakte 2. Are you ready to experience
Europe’s futuristic port?
TOUR OR CRUISE
Visitors who want to get up close and personal with the futuristic terminals
can take either the FutureLand Express XL or the FutureLand Ferry. The
FutureLand Express XL will tour the newest part of the Netherlands every
day and provides visitors with a chance to see the construction work up
close. A guide will provide commentary during the trip. A tour will take
approximately 1 hour, depending on the state of the terminals, and costs €
5.75 per person. The FutureLand Ferry will resume its tour pas the newest
container terminals as of the spring of 2014. A cruise takes approximately 1
hour and costs € 8.75 per person. A ticket for both the tour and the cruise
costs € 13.00 per person. You can find the times for the FutureLand Express
XL and the FutureLand Ferry on the website. We recommend you book
because places are limited.
A DAYTRIP FOR EVERYONE
A visit to FutureLand is great for visitors of all ages from: landlubbers to water
rats, for port enthusiasts and gamers, for families and groups. There is always
something to do, regardless of your interests, in FutureLand’s interactive
environment.
ACTIVITIES AND EXHIBITIONS
Aside from interactive information about the construction work, FutureLand
also frequently houses temporary exhibitions, (art) projects and themed
events. Themed events are organised approximately once a month at
FutureLand. Various subjects related to the expansion of the port are dealt
with during these events. Events may include lectures, tours and exhibitions.
You can view a calendar with upcoming events on www.futureland.nl.
Mammoth bones
Mammoth bones, elk bones and other animal bones are frequently
discovered during the sand mining work for Maasvlakte 2. Interesting finds
include bones with hyena feeding traces (bite marks), a piece of antlers and
bones with signs of human tooling. The most impressive find is a woolly
mammoth’s left thigh bone which measures 132 cm. To date, this is the
largest mammoth thigh bone ever found in the Netherlands. A number of
interesting finds are on display at FutureLand.
ACCESIBILITY AND VISITING HOURS
FutureLand is located on the Maasvlakte’s old seawall at Slag Dobbelsteen.
The visitor centre has access to a disabled entrance, disabled toilets, a lift and
free parking. FutureLand is free for individual visitors. The information centre
is open all year from Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 till 17:00 and on Sundays
between 11:00 and 17:00. The information centre is also frequently open on
Saturdays between 11:00 and 17:00. There is a free tour every Sunday at 13:00
(duration: approximately one hour). Special tours for children are organised
on a regular basis.
You will find the extensive program on
www.futureland.nl.

WATER
The area around the islands of South-Holland is a veritable Eldorado for water lovers. The former Haringvliet and
Grevelingen estuaries and the easily reachable North Sea offer the water sport enthusiast ample space.
BRIELSE MEER
The Brielse Meer is located between the historical fortified town of Brielle
and the Rotterdam port complex. This stretch of water forms the core of
De Brielse Maas recreation area, covering a ten kilometers long area of 750
hectares Various marinas are available along the lake for pleasure boating.
Boats can be moored free at jetties and in small harbours. Particularly
the Brielse Meer offers many facilities for “small” water sports. Canoeing,
pedal boats and also water skiing are among the many possibilities.
There is plenty to do along the lake. There are small beaches, with safe,
demarcated swimming areas and you can cycle along special cycle paths
around the lake. A stop in historical Brielle should not be missed. There are
various trailer slipways around the Brielse Meer.
surrounded by historical villages. The area of the old De Bernisse river was
developed into a unique water sport- recreation area, specially for nonmotor water sports. There is every facility for rowing, surfing, fishing and
swimming. De Bernisse is also an ideal area for walking and cycling.
OOSTVOORNSE MEER
The Oostvoornse Meer (Oostvoorne lake), on the north side of Voorne, is
situated between the North Sea and the Brielse Meer. This 250 hectare
lake offers every opportunity for carefree water sports. There is a ban on
motorboats, and the very clear water, a depth of up to 40 metres beside
the lack of current make it ideal for divers. There are also many facilities
available for the diver. There are plenty of recreation facilities on the banks.
Designated paths have been laid around the lake for cyclists and walkers.
GREVELINGEN
The Grevelingenmeer is the biggest saltwater lake in south-west Europe.
To the west it is bordered by the Brouwersdam and to the east by the
Grevelingendam. The lake lies on the border of the provinces of SouthHolland and Zealand, between the islands of Goeree-Overflakkee and
Schouwen-Duiveland.
In the past, the Grevelingen – together with other estuaries such as
Haringvliet and Oosterschelde - formed the mouth of the river Rhine,
Maas and Waal in the North Sea. As a result of the construction of the
Deltaworks, the Grevelingen Meer was closed off from the North Sea and
is now an Eldorado for all kinds of water sports with many beautiful small
towns to visit.
BERNISSE
To the west of Spijkenisse is De Bernisse recreation area. This 300 hectare
area comprises small lakes, creeks and ponds, amidst meadows,
HARINGVLIET
The Haringvliet is not only an excellent navigation waterway, it is also a
beautiful nature area. The small towns of Hellevoetsluis and Middelharnis
for example are perfect destinations for a sailing trip. The 7000 hectare
Haringvliet that still had an open link with the North Sea 40 years ago, is
an ideal area for motor and sailing boats. The North Sea lies close at hand
through the Haringvliet locks.
69
ACTIVITIES
The ideal way to get to know an area is to leave the car at home and set out on foot or bicycle. Cyclists and walkers
have far more opportunity, absorbing the environment and enjoying the tranquility and open space, without
missing interesting details, one misses when speeding by in a car.
WALKING
Walking routes in all shapes and sizes have been laid out on VoornePutten and Goeree-Overflakkee. Two long distance walking routes
traverse the island of Goeree-Overflakkee: the Oeverloperpad and the
Deltapad. There are also various shorter routes in the dunes, in the
recreation areas and in the nature reserves managed by the Dutch
Forestry Commission. As part of its Recreation & Tourism Masterplan, the
Voorne-Putten-Rozenburg Recreation Commission has developed a total
of eight medium-long walks that are interlinked. Each route is signposted
and published in a beautiful brochure containing map material, photos,
route description and a description of interesting sights along the route.
The brochures are obtainable at all VVV (Tourist Information) offices on
Voorne-Putten and via www.zuid-hollandse-eilanden.nl.
VOORNEPAD
BERNISSEPAD
The Bernissepad (Bernisse Path) is a walking route along, around and over
the centuries old, small Bernisse river that separates the islands of Voorne
and Putten. This route has a total length of 26 kilometres, but there are
various alternative routes that allow you to make the route longer or
shorter.
LANDGOEDERENPAD
The Landgoederenpad (Country Estate Path) takes you past different
country estates and houses near Oostvoorne, each with its own history.
It passes through different landscapes: it will lead you through dense
woodland, onto wide walking lanes and past meadows and arable land.
This route has a total length of approximately 18 kilometres. It is also
possible to split the route into two: either 8 or 10 kilometres.
CYCLING
The same applies for cyclists as for walkers: plenty of choice and variety.
Routes that are definitely worthwhile include the Brielse Meer route,
a popular route on Voorne. The trip takes you along the banks of the
Brielse Meer and the Oostvoornse Meer. En route, you will pass through
Brielle, Zwartewaal and Vierpolders. Another option is the Water Ring
route, combining town and country side. Here, you will cycle along a
ring of water, along the Spui, Oude Maas and Bernisse. In many cases,
particularly in the recreational areas of Bernisse and Brielse Meer,
there are separate cycle paths. For those wishing to enjoy the polder
landscape, the Seven Dykes Route provides an excellent opportunity.
Passing dykes, farms, fields and pastures, the route takes you through
70
rural Voorne-Putten. It also crosses the recreational area Bernisse.
Along the mud flats and salt marshes of the Haringvliet, you will get a
wonderful view of one of the Netherlands’ major estuaries. The Voorne
Route passes over the westerly part of Voorne. The old fortified towns
of Hellevoetsluis and Brielle are on the route. During the trip, the cyclist
also passes the Dunes of Voorne, with Het Brede Water, the country
estate Strypemonde, en route to the seaside resorts of Rockanje and
Oostvoorne. The Brielse Meer route, the Water Ring route, the Seven
Dykes Route and the Voorne route are all signposted by the ANWB.
A folder is available for every route, containing maps, photos and
descriptions of all the ‘sights’ on the way.
RONDJE VOORNE
The Rondje Voorne-Putten, a recreational experience that was specially
created for visitors wishing to explore the island of Voorne by bike,
is getting closer to its final version. The Rondje Voorne-Putten is an
unbroken cycle route along the coast of Voorne, running from the
Boulevard in Oostvoorne, passing Hellevoetsluis and ending, for the
time being, in the harbour of Zuidland. A large part of the path – that is
designed solely for cycles, therefore no mopeds are allowed - takes you
through the Dunes of Voorne and areas outside the dyke. The total route
is 80 kilometres long and will finally connect the municipalities with each
other. An experienced cyclist will be able to do this Voorne-Putten trip in
just over 3 hours. But, of course, the holidaymaker can take as much time
as he or she wants. There is lots to see on the way. Extra attention is paid
to the safety of the cyclists and the cycle path is largely separated from
other traffic lanes.
GOEREE ROUTE
The island of Goeree-Overflakkee can be explored via interesting and
varied routes that are fully signposted.
One of them is the Goeree route that leads through the dunes area
of Ouddorp and the small town of Goedereede. It offers a number of
interesting objects and places, including the Rijdend Trammuseum, the
Expo Haringvliet and the tower museum in Goedereede.
FLAKKEE ROUTE
The Flakkee route allows you to see a different side of the island.
There are plenty of reasons to make a long stop in the twin village of
Middelharnis-Sommelsdijk. The nature reserves Slikken van Flakkee and
the Grevelingenmeer are also on this route. The Oostflakkee route offers a
completely different landscape again. The trip takes you through various
attractive villages, along polders and dykes and the Hellegatsplaten
nature reserve. The Fort Prins Frederik in Ooltgensplaat is worth a visit.
The Tourist Information (VVV) offices provide all the information you need
about cycling and walking on Voorne-Putten and Goeree-Overflakkee.

MOUNTAINBIKE ROUTE
The Netherlands now have another great mountainbike route. The car
park of ‘t Wapen van Marion is an ideal place to start the 14 km long
route that takes you through a very varied landscape, and even through
nature reserves of the South Holland landscape. The idea is to ride in an
anticlockwise direction, to avoid possible tricky situations with road traffic.
The whole route is signposted and has the well-known mountain-bike
logo. At the entrances and exits of the various areas there are barriers to
keep motorbikes off the route. For those who do not own a mountain bike,
it is possible to hire one at ’t Wapen van Marion, with a cycle helmet.
From the car park, you will ride straight into the Mildenburgbos, where
there are some good hills and tight bends. At the end of this wooded
section, you will ride on the Boulevard that is followed by a stretch of
woody dunes. The steep dune here means good speeds and calls for
extreme concentration. At the end of this wood, you travel on a small
section of metalled road and enter the Geuzenbos. The Geuzenbos is a
spectacular flat stretch, especially in slightly wetter weather. Lots of trees
and bends also mean that flat stretches call for good steering skills. Stay
72
alert in this part of the route because you might come across the wellknown Galloway cattle and they will definitely not make way for someone
on an ATB. After the Geuzenbos you will get to the probably most
strenuous and spectacular bit of the dune/dyke runs a magnificent path
with great views of the port of Rotterdam and the beautiful Oostvoornse
lake. Steep ascents followed by spectacular descents mean that you will
have time to take a breather at the end of this part of the route. Then
you will have to manoeuvre again between the gorse in the direction of
the Oostvoorne part of the route over the Brielse Gatdam. From here,
the route follows the bridle path, through the Kaapduin trees. Kaapduin
is a fairly densely wooded section of dunes, with some nice climbs. After
leaving Kaapduin, you will find yourself back in the hotel car park.
There is a rinsing facility here, specially for mountain bikers, so that you can
reward your bike with a good clean after a great ride.

KITE SURFING
Along the sea-facing side of the Brouwers dam is the North Sea beach, where there’s always something going on.
It’s one of The Netherlands’ widest and longest beaches. It is not only a beautiful stretch of nature, but it also offers
the opportunity for a variety of beach activities and sports. The beach, sun, sea and wind create a very dynamic,
energetic environment; play with the natural elements to your heart’s content! A large portion of the beach has
been reserved by the municipality for beach activities; beach and wind sport enthusiasts are given plenty of room
here and have ‘priority’ over other beach users in this section of the beach.
KITE SURFING
The most common activity on the North Sea beach is without a doubt
kite surfing, a sport introduced in The Netherlands some ten years ago.
Kite surfing is an exciting variation of wind surfing, which has evolved
very quickly in recent years. It’s actually a combination of two activities,
kite flying and surfing. The surfer is propelled along the water by a
controllable kite, often reaching high speeds and making impressive
jumps. The Brouwersdam is famous for being one of Europe’s best kite
flying spots; a little wind, and the beach is full of kite flyers turning the sky
into a spectacle of ‘dancing’ kites.
Kite surfing is surprisingly easy to master, even though it is important to
take some instructional lessons at a certified kite surfing school before
getting on the surfboard. People heading out onto the water without
any training can be a danger to themselves and others. A certified kite
surfing school that complies with the regulations of the ‘Watersportbond’
(water sports society), will monitor safety and also award a certificate upon
successful completion of a training course.
kite surfing school that also offers other beach activities with instruction.
Experienced kite surfers, kitebuggyers and blo-karters have the option of
renting gear and equipment. The beach club has a beautiful pavilion with
a unique design: the roof is in the shape of a kite, so that it looks like there’s
a giant kite hanging from it. The restaurant has an interesting menu, with
surprising meat and fish dishes. There’s also a large store where you can
buy kite surfing gear and the trendiest beachwear. You’ll also have the
option of actually testing out the latest kite surfing equipment. The big
terrace along the seaside offers numerous sunny seats with a grand view
of the Brouwersdam beach. In other words - everything under one roof . . .
or rather under one kite!
POWER KITING, BLO-KARTING AND KITE BUGGYING
Other beach/wind sports that can be practiced on the North Sea beach
are power kiting, blo-karting and kite buggying. Power kiting is like kite
flying, only with a very large, powerful kite (a power kite). The challenge of
power kiting is to control the kite and endure the force - a matter of finesse
and control rather than strength. In blo-karting (also called beach sailing),
you sit in a cart that is propelled by an attached sail. Kite buggying is also
done in a cart but with a kite instead of a sail. Power kiting, blo-karting
and kite buggying are all suitable for young and old alike. Blo-karting is
easy to learn; you lie down on your back in the cart (the blo-kart) and steer,
‘body-surfing’ along the beach close to the ground. With kite buggying
it’s important to learn first how to keep the power kite under control,
after which you’ll move on to using the buggies. The long, wide beach at
Brouwersdam makes it an ideal location for these wind sports.

BROUWERSDAM
SUPERSPOT
Welcome to the Kabbelaarsbank!
This is the Brouwersdam ‘interior’ on Lake Grevelingen and has been a favourite location for windsurfers and sailors
for many years. There is a reason for this! Europe’s biggest inland salt water lake offers optimal conditions for an active
and relaxing day of water sports: it has the most sunshine hours in the Netherlands, amazing surroundings and,
more importantly, lots of wind. There are lots of amazing water sports activities on offer and you can park your car
or camper on the banks of the lake at the Kabbelaarsbank. There’s nothing more liberating!
WINDSURFING
Mention the Brouwersdam to windsurfers across the globe and watch an
amazing smile appear on their faces. Upon completion of the Brouwersdam
in 1971, the area quickly developed into a much loved spot for windsurfers.
It is a place where enthusiastic windsurfers meet up regardless of the
weather, where fathers and mothers pass on their passion to their children
and a place where many famous faces in the world of water sports can be
found. Research carried out by the Royal Dutch Touring Club ANWB has
shown that this is one of the most important surfing locations in the world!
More than 1.3 million visitors come here to surf every year. This places it a
close second to Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Brouwersdam is the best place
for windsurfing in Europe. The European top 3 is completed with two
locations in France. Why is Brouwersdam such a great place to surf? The
sturdy wind from the south west, great parking access and the salty, clear
water are all reasons why Brouwersdam is so popular. The fact that the sea
is so nearby means that the wind has free reign and that there is always
enough wind. The ideal conditions for some board time! The shallow pool
in front of Zeil- & Surfcentrum Brouwersdam is great for beginners as well
as experienced freestyle surfers. A number of large changes have been
made since we first started out. Examples include the construction of
bungalow park Port Zélande. However, these changes have not affected
the amazing sense of freedom.
WATER JUMP, SAILING AND STAND UP PADDLING
Sailing is a sport which is connected to Grevelingen just as much as
windsurfing is. The lake is often packed with yachts when the weather
is good. Berthing at one of the islands or ports often completes a day of
water sports. The most spectacular attraction at Brouwersdam is Water
Jump (www.waterjump.nl). This jump is nearly eight meters high and has
three slides. It was opened in May 2009 and is located on the banks of the
Grevelingen, right next to Zeil- & Surfcentrum Brouwersdam’s patio.
A dive off of the water jump is a sensational and invigorating way to
jump into lake Grevelingen. Stand Up Paddling is another sport which is
practised on lake Grevelingen. Stand Up Paddling originated in Hawaii and
is a type of surfing ideal for calm days. On days when the surface of the
lake resembles glass you can paddle to one of the many islands, mussel
banks and natural banks in Lake Grevelingen at your own speed using a
special board. Your body will receive a hefty workout during your session
too!
SAIL & SURF CENTRE BROUWERSDAM

GOLF
Golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the Netherlands. Although this sport has been practiced on a large
scale and worldwide for years, until recently the number of golfers in the Netherlands remained at a consistently
low level. In the past ten years, however, the number of Dutch golfers has almost trebled. In this region too, the
interest in golf has gained ground. There are now two golf courses on Voorne-Putten-Rozenburg and GoereeOverflakkee: Kleiburg and Catharinenburg.
80
1 KLEIBURG
You can find the Kleiburg Golf Club in Brielle. This golf club is an
18-hole golf course with A status, a driving range, putting green and
chipping green. The club has a golf school, golf shop, restaurant and
terrace. Equipment can be hired. Golf buggies are not permitted on
this course. The golf course is open daily with varying opening hours,
also depending on the season. The driving range is open longer on
weekdays.
The Catharinenburg golf course is open 7 days a week and accessible to
everyone with a GVB or EGA handicap. Reservation is not necessary, the
starting order is determined by using a ball spiral. It‘s recommended to
consult the up-to-date course information on the golf course’s website
beforehand. Catharinenburg is the home course of Roxenisse Golf Club,
an active association with its own tournament/game calendar for both
competitive and recreational golfers. The golf pros can teach you the
technique and rules of this challenging game.
2
CATHARINENBURG
Catharinenburg golf course is situated in the vicinity of the Slikken van
Flakkee nature preserve. Surrounded by nature, this 18-hole course
could be considered‚ a dune course, a 9-hole par-3 course, a grand

HORSE-RIDING
The South Holland islands with its woods, dunes, beaches and polders are ideal for being explored on horseback.
PACKAGES FOR RIDERS
The packages are usually divided into three categories: beginners, semiadvanced and advanced. Supervised outdoor rides are made on a regular
basis. Most riding schools organise rides on outdoor trails that are fine for
the inexperienced rider. These rides take you through beautiful Voorne.
During the ride, there is plenty of walking and some trotting. This ride
does not call for a lot of experience, although you will “control” the horse
yourself. An experienced supervisor is present on every ride and if there
are a lot of participants, several supervisors will accompany them. The
supervisors are all experienced and skilled people. This means you will
always be in good hands.
Riding schools also offer you the opportunity to ride freely (without
instruction) on school ponies/horses in one of the indoor or outdoor
maneges. Free riding is usually possible every day, but at various times, so
you are advised to book your ride.

WATERSKI
Those who enjoy the more unusual water sports can have a whale of a time on the Brielse Meer and Haringvliet.
Water-skiing and scuba diving at just a stone’s throw from each other. The Brielse Meer and Haringvliet offer every
opportunity for water-skiing.
On the lake Brielse Meer, various zones have been set out, where people
can go water-skiing without any problems. The three most known – and
still most popular – forms of skiing are slalom, ski jumping and figure skiing.
Today’s most trendy ski sport is, without a doubt, wakeboarding that
originated on the beaches of America. Wakeboarding is a cross between
water-skiing and surfing, and can be compared with snowboarding.
On the Haringvliet, water-skiing and speed boating is allowed everywhere,
except in an area within 300m from the banks, the outer harbour of
82
Stellendam, to the north of the island Tiengemeten, around the Slijkplaat
near Hellevoetsluis within the markings. The water in the Haringvliet is
fresh water that will turn brackish in the future, because the Directorate
General for Public Works and Water Management decided to open the
storm surge barrier.
A good place to launch your boat from a trailer is the Quackjesstrand to
the north of the storm surge barrier. The boat ramp is free, there are 2
beach cafes and a small beach.
There are various skiing schools on both the Haringvliet and the Brielse
Meer, offering everything the modern skier could expect.
DIVING
The Oostvoorne lake is one of the favourite diving locations in the Netherlands. Scuba divers come from all over the
country to enjoy the unique conditions.
The Oostvoorne lake used to be open sea, but was dammed off for the construction of the Maasvlakte in order to
be able to use the sand for the raising of the new industrial area. As a result the lake is more than 40 metres deep in
some places. The water still has a salty character and is therefore extremely clear. It is home to a unique underwater
life. Conditions that cannot be found anywhere else in the country. There are several diving schools here.
SCUBA DIVING LOCATIONS
I OOSTVOORNE • BAARDMANNETJE
Nice place for diving, with good visibility. Ideal for practicing. Not
surprisingly, the spacious car park is full every weekend with diving schools
coming here to practice for all kinds of exams. There is good visibility.
Underwater you will find a tyre track, an ANWB post, vague remainders
from the movie Amsterdamned, a small intact boat, the Yellow Arrow, a
nice rowing boat (also more or less intact) and the well-known pieces of
the Archimedes. A little further away, the Big Buddy (a diving dummy) and
here and there a few surprises.
III OOSTVOORNE • STORMVOGEL
Highly suitable for practice and navigation diving.
With all the objects, it is a real playground for both novice and advanced
divers. A practice platform has been erected at three different depths,
and there is also an underwater house, various wrecks, SRV van and an
underwater slide to help you overcome your claustrophobia. But the peat
walls and blocks in the “Grand Canyon” are also definitely worth a visit.
All of this can be recognised above water from the red and green buoys.
II OOSTVOORNE • BERGEEND
No car park
Highly suitable for practice and navigation diving.
IV OUDDORP • PREEKHIL This location for experienced divers is known for its good visibility.
However, a stiff walk precedes the dive.

FISHING
The South Holland Islands comprise the area’s that contain the largest number of fish within the Netherlands and
they offer a true paradise for sports anglers. All different types of sports fishing can be exercised in the area.
HET KANAAL DOOR VOORNE (Canal through Voorne)
The Kanaal door Voorne, which runs right through Voorne, is known,
amongst other reasons, for its whitefish content, including bream, carp
and predatory fish. Over 200 fishing places have been positioned along
the banks, that can easily be accessed by car.
THE BERNISSE
Particularly rock bass can be caught in De Bernisse Recreational Area that
generally offer excellent opportunities to any sports angler. Part of De
Bernisse is designed as a trout pond, where, amongst others, the sheatfish
and American striped bass can be caught.
SPUI
The Spui is a very different water altogether. A strong feeder rod needs
to be used for fishing as a result of the strong current. Not easy, but very
productive and satisfying.
HET BRIELSE MEER
The Brielle lake, with its islands and banks surrounded by woods and trees,
is a beautiful and enclosed fishing area for any type of sports sports fishing
activity. It’s not just an excellent place for whitefish and carp fishing, but
it’s also fantastic pike water.
HARINGVLIET EN GREVELINGEN
The former arms of the sea Haringvliet and Grevelingen – that are widely
known for their large numbers of bream and fishing with feeder - have
84
the richest fishing water in the entire area. Fishing for eel, carp, white
bream and even sea trout is popular in Haringvliet and Grevelingen. The
latter can be caught in Haringvliet, as a result of one of the locks in the
Haringvlietdam being left open.
DE POLDERS
The polders also offer an abundance of possibilities. The drainage system
offers a nicely varied number of fish. The most beautiful catches in the
polder include rudd, tench and the crucian carp.
SEA ANGLING
Due to its coastal location people also go sea fishing. Well-known areas
include the Maasvlakte, the Haringvlietdam locks, Brouwersdam and the
top of the Landtong in Rozenburg. Sports fishing vessels regularly depart
from harbours in neighbouring areas to go fishing on the North Sea.
FLY- FISHING
OOSTVOORNSE MEER
The lake Oostvoorne Meer is the best known fly fishing water in the
Netherlands. The trout that can be found here grow to record sizes as a
result of the favourable circumstances. People can only fish here with a fly
fishing rod and all fish caught must be returned to the water.

SUSTAINABILITY IN
OOSTVOORNE
An example of sustainable construction and
operation is Aan Zee, a Restaurant in Oostvoorne.
Aan Zee is built with natural and sustainable materials. The necessary energy is generated from
the sun and wind. The food is cooked on wood
(so there is no connection for gas needed).
On the roof are solar panels and solar water heaters, and next to the restaurant are windmills,
that’s how the electricity is won from the sun
warmth and wind.
The company features a low temperature heating and cooling installation that extracts energy
from the soil: in the summer the heat is transported to deep soil layers to be used in the winter
weather.
The waste water is purified in a helofytenfield
and the rainwater is filtered in the dunes which
means no drainage connections are necessary.
The lighting is provided by led lamps which are
fed by the wind and solar electricity.
Therefore Aan Zee is an example for sustainable
entrepreneurship and certainly deserves following and not just in the hospitality industry.

WITH THE KIDS
“DE FLIPJES” PLAYGROUND, OUDDORP
A playground like you’ve never seen before. The children can thoroughly enjoy
themselves the whole day, while parents, grandparents or minders enjoy a rest with
plenty of seats close to the playground equipment. On the opposite side of the road
is “De Flipjes” pancake house and on production of your day ticket you leave and
(re-) enter the playground.
MEKKERSTEE
The Mékkerstee is a farm which houses approximately 300 satisfied goats. We make
organic goat’s cheese and traditional ice-cream using goat’s milk. These products
are sold to visitors in the farm shop and are also sold to companies. Our organic
goat’s cheese is featured on the menu of various restaurants. And then there’s
IJshoeve, our range of ice-cream, which is going to be launched soon. In addition to
goats they also have more animals like chickens, horses and a pig. Children will have
a great time: and not just with the animals.
They can also enjoy the playground.
The old goat shed has been turned into a the Landwinkel; this shop houses our icecream and cheese production. Because, despite the fact that ice-cream and cheese
making are traditional processes; the use of modern machinery can make things just
that bit easier. We used to give all the cheese a brine bath by hand. We now use a
larger brine bath with rigging which means we no longer need to do that.
The Mékkerstee, a great place for parents and children to visit!
FAUNAPARK FLAKKEE, NIEUWE TONGE
The park has a wide variety of animals and birds varying from parakeets to birds of
prey, owls and different larger animals, including deer and kangaroos. There is also
a cuddling corner with animals, including goats and rabbits that can be cuddled.
Visitors in a wheelchair, for example, can now see the whole park via the newly
constructed paths.
PLASWIJCKPARK
Enjoy yourself or play with your friends in family park Plaswijckpark! You will never
be finished playing!
SPEELWIJCK
In our children’s playground you can go from the super fast Kangaroetsjjj, or in
our old-fashioned carousel. In the cable car you will fly over the water. The park is
well-organized and you will feel safe, because your parents can keep an eye on you
from the centrally located terrace. In the large traffic garden you can find our pedal
go-karts, so you can join the live traffic. Are you over-heated of playing in the gokarts? Come and enjoy splashing around in the harbour playground. Or would you
rather play like the Vari’s on Monkey Island? Monkey island is a challenging monkey
playground.
BIG INDOOR PLAYGROUND!
Never think that you only can make use of Plaswijckpark with nice weather. Now
there is a large indoor garden (nearly 2,000 m2), which guarantees hours of fun! In
the House of Grandma and Grandpa van der Plas you can jump on the beds, climb
and go through secret cabinets and clocks, in the bathroom you can shoot with
bubbles and much more!
DIERENWIJCK
At the Zoo there are many animals such as monkeys and Plaswijckpark wallabies.
Some are known, such as the Black Swans and otters, but who knows what a Vari is,
or a Rhea or an Alpaca?
WANDELWIJCK
Are you looking for a nice place to have a picnic? What about on the grass or on
one of the many picnic benches in Wandelwijck. Here you can enjoy your delicious
sandwich.

At Blijdorp Zoo you’ll go on a journey of discovery, and will come across a variety of
fun, strange and interesting animals. Before you know it, you’ll be standing face to
face with a giraffe, or watching gorilla youngsters monkeying about on their lush,
green island. You can also explore the bottom of the sea (without a snorkel or mask)
and travel the coasts in the Oceanium. And there’s plenty more to experience –
where else but at a zoo can you find out a whole lot about so many different kinds
of animals?!
PANCAKES BOAT ROTTERDAM
The port of Rotterdam has a speciality specifically for children: the Pancake Boat!
What child wouldn’t like to sail for an hour on a boat and at the same time enjoy
eating an unlimited number of pancakes? Whether all the children will survive
without a tummy ache is not entirely known! But one thing is certain: everyone has
a wonderful time on this boat trip
KINDERSPEELPARADIJS ’T GEUZENPALEIS, BRIELLE
Playground paradise ’t Geuzenpaleis is an indoor adventure playground for
children under the age of 12. They can have fun on the gigantic climbing
frame/slide structure, jump on the bouncy castles, surf on the surf simulator
or have a go on the rodeo bull. For the smaller children, there is a special soft

NEELTJE JANS WATERLAND
Educational and fun! That’s the best way to describe the exhibitions and
attractions at ‘Waterland Neeltje Jans’ along the Oosterschelde dam.
An exhibition can be seen in the info centre with (visual) information
about the Delta works. Educational, by showing the beautiful and well
thought-out manner in which water is managed in the Delta area. And
the attractions of course will provide the ‘fun’ element, especially for the
youngsters.
At Neeltje Jans, you’ll find Zealand’s largest aquarium, along with interactive
presentations. Here, the Oosterschelde’s undersea kingdom – with vibrant
sea anemones, crabs, shrimps, stingrays and other fish, is revealed. The
‘Stormvloedkering’ allows this habitat to exist and be maintained.
The boat will introduce you to the Oosterschelde’s unique ecology. Even
seals and porpoises can sometimes be spotted.
Please, consult the map on page 115 as well.

AQUAPARK SPLASH
In 2013 Aquapark Splash was a great success in all aspects and it is for
that reason that the owner decided to make Aquapark Splash bigger and
better.
The park is open for children young, old and in possession of a swimming
certificate. If children are accompanied by parents/guardians also children
without swimming certificate have access. Parents/guardians can, if
desired, enjoy a snack or a drink on one of the terraces at the pavilions
and in the meantime keep an eye on their children. You can also choose a
spot on the sandy beach, along the beautiful Haringvliet. Security before
everything! There are up to 70 children allowed per play hour on the
Aquapark. So children can play safely at all times. All around Aquapark
Splash is an special monitoring dock so trained personnel have a good
overview.
The park is opened daily during the summer season, which runs from the
1ste of June to the 30th of September.

ROTTERDAM
ROTTERDAM IS A TRUE METROPOLIS.
The impressive skyline that gives the city its metropolitan image can be seen from a long way off. Rotterdam is
famous nationally and internationally as an architecture city, with numerous examples of innovative architecture.
These include the famous Cube houses that you can even visit inside, in the special Kijk-kubus (Show-Cube).
An enjoyable way to really discover the architectural highlights of the city is a
guided tour by Rotterdam ArchiGuides. These specialised guides will show you
the most beautiful buildings via a variety of routes. Through its metropolitan
character, Rotterdam is known as a typically masculine city. The centre of
Rotterdam is laid out on a grand and spacious scale, which is emphasized by all
the water. The river Maas flows through the heart of the city and together with
the now famous Erasmus Bridge it forms the symbol of Rotterdam. Numerous
little harbours can be found on the banks of the river, each with its own unique
character. You can visit for example the nostalgic Veerhaven, or the entirely
different modern, renovated Lloydkwartier. Further downstream you will see the
mercantile docks making Rotterdam the biggest city port in Europe. A boat-trip
through the harbours and city is something you really can’t miss on a visit to
Rotterdam. You can sail on a Spido excursion boat past the imposing architecture
of ‘Manhattan on the Maas’. In just 75 minutes you can explore the whole of
Rotterdam by water: the city centre, the harbours, docks, shipyards and quays.
Another pleasant way to see Rotterdam from the water is by water taxi. These fast
little boats take you from one bank of the Maas to the other in no time at all. You
can also discover Rotterdam in a spectacular way with Splashtours. After a round
trip through the city, the special amphibious bus makes a SPLASH in the Maas,
after which there is always something to do in Rotterdam. More than seventeen
96
million visitors find their way to the city every year. Fans of the fascinating world
of railways can enjoy themselves to their heart’s content at Railz Miniworld. This
indoor model rail track is the biggest in the Netherlands and offers an interactive
experience for young and old. The place where you find out everything about
the port of Rotterdam is the Maritime Museum. A day out in Rotterdam would
not be complete without a visit to the Euromast. The highest observation tower
in the Netherlands gives you a fantastic view over the whole of Rotterdam. When
the weather is clear, you can even see Antwerp and The Hague. If there is not
too much wind and you are brave enough, you can go abseiling with ropes
from the Euromast in the summer months. Rotterdam has much more to offer.
An event is held almost every weekend. It is not for nothing that the city has
already been designated events city of the year three times. You can also shop
to your heart’s content in the city. Feast your eyes in one of the chic shops in Van
Oldenbarneveltstraat or visit the hip boutiques in Witte de Withstraat. Even on a
Sunday, fanatical shoppers can enjoy themselves in Rotterdam,
the shops in the city centre are open 7 days a week.
Difficult to decide where to go? The free booklet ‘Shopping in Rotterdam’ with
eight very pleasant shopping walking routes is obtainable at the VVV Rotterdam
Store.

WORLDPORT DAYS
On september 5 to 7 september the World port Days will take place again.
During the World Port Days the visitors are shown every aspect of the
port. In Rotterdam, the port and the city are closely linked to one another.
Visitors are informed about the goings-on at the port in an instructive and
playful manner, and a variety of port shows are displayed on the water.
The port(-related) companies at the quayside present themselves with a
vast collection of special port equipment, large cranes, innovative projects
and ships whose interior you may visit. Career opportunities at the port
will be outlined at a job market communication plaza and you will find lots
of activities for children.
Additionally, the excursions are an essential part of the programme. These
mini trips will take you to the most diverse companies by boat, bus, train
or even aeroplane. Traditionally the official starting signal of the World Port
Days takes place on Friday afternoon. In collaboration with the Educational
Information Centre a special (school-related) programme is organised for
young people on this Friday.
Each year, the opening act reflects the annual theme. The Saturday night
programme is a special one to attend. A show will be held on the Maas river
and the night will be concluded by an extraordinary display of fireworks.

ENJOY THE SPECTACLE AT
TRUCK & TRACTOR PULLING
The 14th edition of
TRUCK AND TRACTOR PULLING OUDENHOORN
will take place on Saturday 14 June 2014!!
This year, as in previous years, our volunteers will do their very best to
make the arena an amazing location for a night full of spectacular Truck
and Tractor Pulling.
Track 1 will include the 6 classes which make up the Grand National
teams who will be battling it out for points towards the Dutch
championship. The best known teams will be present during these
races. All kinds of engines and mechanical forces will be on show at
this course and you will also be able to enjoy the amazing sounds
these machines make (though we recommend you bring ear plugs!).
The 2nd track will feature the battles of the Farm Stock Sport Class
and the Super Sport Trucks Class. The Farm Stock Klasse consists
of tractors which look just the same as regular ones. However, once
you lift the hood it’s a whole different story as literally everything has
102
been changed to increase the speed. Most of the trucks also look like
the ones you will see driving down the highway. That is, until they
put the pedal to the metal for the tow truck! Truck & Tractor Pulling
Oudenhoorn is a great family event suited for people of all ages. The
event is also more than just a competition. It features a fair, children’s
activities like a skelter pulling competition and bouncy castles. There
are also a number of catering stands on site which offer snacks, icecream and other treats sourced in Oudenhoorn and the surrounding
area. Also present at this year’s event: RC Junkies, a sporty club on the
go with their radio-controlled model cars which can reach speeds of
up to 80 km/hr.
We wish all our participants the best of luck and hope that our audience
has lots of fun seeing and listening to the various events. Start 16.00

Take a trip back to the sixties and
GO ON A SOLEX RIDE!
Pure nostalgia. A trip which will take you back to the good old days.
You will be greeted by the sounds of the sixties the minute you step
into Solex & Zo. We think the traditional jukebox is an amazing touch.
And, once you start trying on the leather jackets and the caps and
helmets you will be transported to another era.
The owners, who are happy to help you all day, every day, will make
sure that customers are ready to go and will provide you with all the
necessary information for a safe trip.
Small groups are allowed to head off alone with just a map. These tours
last three hours. Small groups can arrive on the spur of the moment
or they can wait and see what the weather is like. All they need to do
is give us a ring to see if we can fit them in. We are also happy to help
people who fancy going out on a Solex date or who fancy a trip on the
road by themselves.
We recommend you book a date for larger groups who want to go on
rides of 1 to 2 hours. Large groups will receive an escort including a
guide who will ride up front and a car to follow.
The 1 hour drive is especially popular as a company outing as it can
take place once work has finished and can be followed by a meal.
However, bookings around lunch time or bookings for bachelor parties
are also extremely popular. There’s nothing better than exploring the
area for an hour and then following it up with lunch in one of the great
places nearby. Plus, you will also have the whole afternoon for other
activities.

THE MANY FLAVOURS OF
DUINHOEK
Going on holiday? A weekend away? Taking a couple of days off to relax or to be
really active? We can offer you all of this at Duinhoek. Duinhoek’s location on the
beautiful South Holland island of Voorne-Putten offers you so much to do, both
when the sun is shining and when the weather is less enticing. Middelburg is close by,
or you could enjoy a day at the Blijdorp Zoo or a Spido boat trip in Rotterdam.
DUNES, SEA AND BEACH
Duinhoek lies beside the Voornes Duin in
the Quack polder. This relatively recent,
calcareous area of dunes comprises
hollows, dunes, marshes, shifting dunes
and woods offering, most of all, lots of
peace and quiet.
The beach is on the Haringvliet, a former
estuary on the North Sea. You can reach
the Haringvliet beach via the many
passages through the dunes. There is also
a pedestrian tunnel that takes you under
the N57 to the North Sea beach. The
car park at Haringvliet is very large and
entirely free of charge!!
NATURE
Voornes Duin lies on the South Holland
island of Voorne-Putten, less than half an
hour’s drive from Rotterdam. It is one of
the richest natural dune areas in Western
Europe. And despite being so close to
Rotterdam, it is an area that offers you
mainly peace and quiet. Come and walk
through the extensive dunes. Or discover
the area by joining in one of the many
activities organised by the Society for the
Preservation of Nature in the Netherlands.
You may suddenly step from the shadow
of the thick woods into the dry sand
of the dunes. This variety means that
Voornes Duin has a treasury of many
types of plants and extraordinary birds.
You could even spot the little egret!
www.vakantieduinhoek.nl
ACCOMMODATION
Duinhoek offers suitable accommodation
to fit everyone’s wishes and budget.
In Duinhoek you have the choice of
various types of camp sites for tents,
campers and caravans, four-person
walkers’ refuges, comfortable oldfashioned wooden caravans where your
children will have the time of their lives,
luxury four and six-person chalets and,
finally, Duinhoek offers you a choice from
5 different types of spacious holiday
houses (+/- 92 m2), and two of these
types of houses have thatched roofs. As
you can see, you will be spoilt for choice.
ACTIVITIES
There is a wide range of different
activities in Duinhoek such as walking
and cycling (we are also an ANWB bicycle
service point). The Haringvliet offers
those who enjoy water sports many
possibilities, which include sailing and
surfing, as well as enjoying the only
open-air aqua park in the Netherlands,
Aquapark Splash. Its unique location and
beautiful nature make this place a true
leisure paradise. Both the Brouwersdam
and the 2nd Maasvlakte beach close by
are perfect for kite surfers and for divers
there is the Oostvoornse lake. The staff
of our Leisure Team is ready to entertain
you and your children, both in the high
season and in the holidays during the
spring (Easter and Whitsun).
CULTURE
The Hellevoetsluis fortress offers a
number of wonderful historical points
worth seeing such as the Droogdok (Dry
Dock) and the De Buffel Museum Ship.
Take a walk through the fortress and its
surrounding walls and let yourself be
taken back through history with famous
names such as Michiel de Ruyter and
Maarten Tromp. Have a drink on one of
the terraces or enjoy a wonderful dinner
in one of the restaurants and take in a
theatre performance at the beautiful
Twee Hondjes Theatre.
FACILITIES. EATING AND DRINKING
You can make use of the reception
facilities at Duinhoek, which offer a lot
of tourist information and ticket sales
etc. There are also the indoor heated
swimming pool (10x15 metres with a
small children’s corner), a private sauna,
a massage parlour, beauty salon (where
you may also make a hairdresser’s
appointment), a lunch room, a snack bar,
Tony’s Pub, the Duinhoek restaurant with
a lovely terrace by the water, a café*, a
pancake restaurant*, 2 shops for your
daily needs, bicycle hire which includes
e-bikes, go-karts and wagon hire, an
indoor and outdoor play area for children,
a water play and spray area, bowling,
glow in the dark golf, E-Play, and rooms
for all types of events.
*We hope to be opening a new building
at Duinhoek by mid-June, where the
facilities marked with a * will be based.
ZIERIKZEE
Z
ierikzee, monument town, pearl on the
Oosterschelde. In the 10th century a few farmers
and/or fishermen settled on the stream the
Ee. This was a favourable spot, since the Ee
flowed into the Gouwe, an important shipping
connection between Flanders, Holland and
Zealand. As a result of its prosperity, Zierikzee
already had a prominent silhouette at the
beginning of the 15th century with walls,
gates, churches, tower and windmills. Zierikzee
is currently the 8th monument town in the
Netherlands after much bigger cities such as
Amsterdam, Leiden, Maastricht and Haarlem.
Zierikzee is now a picturesque monument town
where it is pleasant to shop and where you can
enjoy yourself on one of the many terraces. There
is a marina and it is the home port of the fishing
fleet. In the museum harbour you can find old
ships near the beautiful town gates. Furthermore
there are many galleries and artists’ studios.
During the summer months the shops are also
open on Sundays.
A MUST
The museum harbour Zealand
is a museum with two
locations.
At the Old Harbour you will
find the collection of historical ships. Nearby
is the Stads- & Commerciewerf, the museum
wharf, where ship repair works are performed
as part of the unsurpassed Interegg III
106
programme.
The address of the wharf is: Vissersdijk 2.
Both locations are open to the public.
The town hall museum Zierikzee
The rich history, Zierikzee can look back on
is being highlighted within one of the city’s
most prominent monuments, the former
town hall. Silverware, old postcards and
paintings illustrate the development of
Zierikzee over the centuries. de eeuwen heen

VEERE
V
eere is one of the most surprising places in
Zealand. A dream from previous lives. A small
town with a combination of a still visible grand
past, a contemporary atmosphere and the
proximity of the always fascinating water. On the
Kaai on the marina and on the Markt, there are
beautiful merchant’s houses and warehouses
with stepped gables, spout gables, border
gables and bell gables. The names of many
houses and the plaques tell of the trade, the
products that were traded and the countries and
places to which they used to sail. The Town Hall
in Veere was taken into use in 1474 by the Veere
town councillors. The statues of the lords and
ladies of Veere, residents of the Sandenburgh
castle, can be found on the façade. In addition
to its function as administrative centre the town
hall also served as court (vierschaar) until 1811.
During the course of five centuries this was the
place where town clerks carried out their duties,
where death sentences were pronounced by the
Veere baljuw (judge) and where monarchs were
proudly received with pomp and circumstance.
Throughout the centuries the Grote Kerk (Big
Church), also known as “Onze Lieve Vrouwe
ter Sneeuw”, has been used as a warehouse,
barracks, military hospital, beggars’ workhouse
and exhibition room.
GOES
Museum the Scottish Houses in Veere
From 1444 onwards Scottish
merchants lived in Veere for some
centuries. Two of their houses, De Struijs and
Het Lammeken, have been transformed into
a museum. The house De Struijs contains
two rooms - a best room and study - that
are decorated as Scottish rooms. Beside
many original objects and documents that
remind of the trade relationship between
Scotland and Veere, copies of original
painting can be admired in the two rooms.
G
oes, the lively heart of Zealand. A day out in
Goes is just a first introduction, because anyone
who has an eye for beautiful and historical
objects, will return. If only because a day is too
short to shop, sit on a terrace, go on a walk along
the monuments and historical buildings or to
visit the Historical Museum De Bevelanden.
Goes has a large number of historically interesting
buildings, in particular in the area around the
quays and the Grote Markt. The buildings in the
centre are included in the special monuments
route.
Goes has an attractive shopping centre that
attracts visitors from far beyond the town
boundaries. The number of shops is comparable
with that of a medium-sized town. Many shops
are located in historical buildings in the area
immediately behind the Grote Markt. After a trip
around the many shops you can enjoy a snack or
a drink in one of the bars or restaurants on the
Grote Markt or the surrounding streets.
107
T
he county town of Zeeland may rightfully be
called a monument town. In total you will find
around 1100 large and small monuments that
still exude the atmosphere of a rich past. The
wonderful abbey, the impressive town hall and
the beautiful façades of the merchant’s houses
and warehouses give you a taste of the past. For
a long time Middelburg was, after Amsterdam,
the second VOC (Dutch East Company)
commercial town in the Netherlands.
MIDDELBURG
V
lissingen is a maritime town on the
Westerschelde estuary and at the entry to
the North Sea. The town owes its charm,
its structure, its character and its appeal to
its position on the sea. The atmosphere in
Vlissingen is also defined by the movement
of ships in the roadstead just in front of the
promenades, the activity in the harbours and
the yachts in the Middeleeuwse Vissershaven
(Mediaeval Fishing Harbour), but also to the
Arsenal with its attractions, the shopping arcade
and the constant movement of wind, water and
clouds. Vlissingen is inextricably linked with the
Westerschelde. Vlissingen is also an important
monument town. With around 300 national
monuments and historical buildings Vlissingen
belongs to the top 50 of the Dutch monument
towns.
VLISSINGEN
YERSEKE
Y
erseke is a fishing town on the Oosterschelde,
it is famous for its mussel and oyster cultivation.
Yerseke is the Dutch centre for crustaceans and
shellfish, including mussels, lobsters, cockles,
winkles and oysters. The fishing involves many
activities, there are for example oysters basins
within the dykes and there are many mussel
processing industries along the waterfront. A
walk along these activities is definitely worth
the effort.

GOUDA
T
he name Gouda is not only associated with
cheese, pipes, syrup waffles and earthenware, but
also with stained glass windows, a picturesque
town hall and romantic canals. Gouda is a
convivial Old Dutch town with its historical
centre still virtually intact. Gouda has more than
300 monuments! The VVV in Gouda has laid out
a walk through the town that leads past these
monuments and many different interesting sights.
The 123-metre high St. Janskerk, with its world
famous “Goudse Glazen” stained glass windows,
the magnificent gothic Town Hall and the Waag
are well worth a visit!
VLAARDINGEN
V
laardingen is a pleasant town. While its
southern side borders the New Waterway with
its busy shipping traffic, the northern side
lies on the fringes of the fascinating MiddenDelfland nature and recreation area. An area
with an original centuries-old ditch pattern
dating back to the 10th through 13th century
is still virtually intact. The old land parceling
patterns, many terps and also the creek ridges
can be clearly seen in the landscape.

Schiedam has 225 national monuments. These
monuments include the five biggest windmills
in the world. De Nieuwe Palmboom Museum
