interest, in an informal setting, at the nearby Café De Jaren.

Introductions to the presentations:
Dr. David Berge, University of Amsterdam:
Extreme astronomy with gamma rays
Gamma-ray astronomy has recently evolved from few-photon experiments to fully developed
facilities capable of imaging structures within astronomical objects thought to be sites of highenergy particle (cosmic ray) acceleration. Observations with instruments like the Fermi-LAT or
H.E.S.S. use particle-physics techniques and have helped in recent years to open a new window
provided by photons of GeV to TeV energies to study the "extreme Universe". I will summarise
the state of the art in gamma-ray astronomy and describe how very energetic photons provide
constraints on some of the physical processes behind the extreme Universe. I will explain what
the future holds for this field, and will conclude by describing our new gamma-ray activities in
the Netherlands towards a participation in the construction of the next-generation gamma-ray
observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array.
Prof. dr. Ger de Bruyn, ASTRON/University of Groningen:
The LOFAR EoR Project
I will describe the status of the LOFAR EoR project and show results on deep continuum
imaging, in full Stokes, of the various EoR windows. I will give a short summary of the EoR
science questions, the processing strategy and the remaining obstacles. Finally I will describe the
prospects of detecting signals of redshifted HI from the EoR for the redshift range from 7-11.5 in
2014.
Dr. Catherine Walsh, Leiden University:
The Chemical Heritage of Planetary Systems
Protoplanetary disks are vital objects in star and planet formation, containing all the ingredients gas, dust, and ice - for building new planetary systems. The chemical composition of disks is of
particular importance because it is this material which determines the final molecular
composition of planetary atmospheres and planetesimals such as comets. In this talk, I will
review the current knowledge regarding the chemical and physical structure of protoplanetary
disks around Sun-like stars. I will discuss some of the open questions in the field, such as, the
origin of complex organic molecules considered the 'building blocks' of Life, and the different
physical and chemical processes which influence the composition of planetary atmospheres. I
will also describe how new observational facilities, for instance, the Atacama Large
Millimeter/Submillimeter Array and upcoming space missions such as Rosetta are likely to have
a transformational effect on our understanding of planet formation.

Dr. Gemma Janssen, ASTRON:
Detecting gravitational waves using a pulsar timing array
Using pulsars as distant clocks provides the basis of high precision timing measurements, and
gives a unique tool to probe various astrophysical processes. In general, the best measurements
of pulsar parameters are obtained when using data sets that consist of large numbers of
observations of millisecond pulsars, and covering time spans as long as possible. In practice, this
requires combining data sets from multiple telescopes.
Gravitational waves (GWs) are small disturbances in space-time that are caused by the
movement of masses in space-time itself. They are predicted to originate from a variety of
sources, and are expected to occur over a wide range of frequencies. A pulsar timing array will
use an array of millisecond pulsars as the endpoints of a galaxy-scale GW detector. It will be
sensitive to GWs with frequencies in the nano-Hertz regime, being complementary to the
frequency bands addressed by ground- or space-based detectors.
I will describe the current efforts of the European and International pulsar timing array
collaborations in the run towards the first direct detection of gravitational waves. I will present
the recent highlights of our work, and our new way of connecting all European telescopes in
order to improve our sensitivity by an order of magnitude: the Large European Array for
Pulsars.
Dr. Steven Bloemen, Radboud University Nijmegen / KU Leuven:
Kepler’s view on binary stars
While the Kepler satellite was designed to hunt for planets, its precise and quasi uninterrupted
photometric observations of about 150 000 stars have also proven to be of immense value to the
binary star community. During this talk we will dig into Kepler's treasure chest of over 2500
eclipsing binaries. Highlights include the discoveries of circumbinary planets, stars that show
tidally excited oscillations, and the detection of small-amplitude effects in the light curves such as
gravitational lensing and Doppler beaming. We end with a discussion on ongoing work and the
proposed ‘K2’ Mission. During this phase, the satellite will point at ecliptic fields, thereby
opening up an exciting opportunity to select high profile targets that where not accessible during
the nominal Mission.

Leden kunnen hun contributie vóór 1 april 2014 overmaken naar NL70 INGB 0000834997 t.n.v.
Nederlandse Astronomenclub te Amsterdam. Leden woonachtig in België dienen daartoe bij
de overschrijving te vermelden de BIC van de ING bank: INGBNL2A.
Van in het buitenland woonachtige leden wordt een vrijwillige bijdrage gewaardeerd.

Notulen van de huishoudelijke vergadering van de Nederlandse Astronomenclub
gehouden op 18 januari 2013 te Amsterdam
1. Opening en vaststelling van de agenda
Voorzitter C. Waelkens opent om 12.30 uur de vergadering. De agenda wordt geaccepteerd.
2. Mededelingen van het bestuur
NAC Conferentie 2013, georganiseerd door U Gent + KU Leuven vindt plaats te Lommel, België,
van 15-17 mei 2013.
3. Notulen van de vorige huishoudelijke vergadering
De notulen worden goedgekeurd na enkele correcties:
“Kascommissie 2013” -> “Kascommissie boekjaar 2012” en “regelement” -> “reglement”
4. Jaarverslag secretaris
Het jaarverslag wordt geaccepteerd na verwijdering van de incorrecte zinnen “Na controle ..
verantwoordelijk is.” in de derde paragraaf; en na de volgende correctie:
“UU” -> “voor de laatste maal aan de UU”
5. Jaarrekening penningmeester, verslag Kascommissie, vaststelling Kascommissie 2013
Penningmeester Jan Lub geeft enige uitleg bij de jaarrekening 2012. Kascommissie 2012 bij
monde van Henk Olthof (vz) adviseert de jaarrekening goed te keuren. ALV keurt de
jaarrekening goed en dechargeert het bestuur. Kascommissie boekjaar 2013 bestaat uit Wim
Hermsen (vz) en Ralph Wijers.
6. Voorstel contributieregeling en begroting 2013
De contributieregeling is ongewijzigd. De ALV keurt de begroting goed.
7. Bestuurswijzigingen
Secretaris Dr. J. van Leeuwen wordt verkozen voor 2e termijn.
8. Rondvraag en sluiting
i) Overleden NAC leden Henk van Bueren, Aad Fokker, Gart Westerhout en Sjoerd Hardeman
worden herdacht.
ii) Edwin Mathlener vraagt waarom NAC ALV niet op Sonnenborgh wordt georganiseerd?
Bestuur antwoordt zeer geïnteresseerd te zijn maar dat de huur plus de offerte voor inrichting +
catering van Oud London het NAC budget helaas te boven ging.
iii) Wim Brouw vraagt of Opticon ondersteuning kan bieden voor NNV La Palma reizen?
Secretaris antwoordt dat op de Opticon website daarover geen informatie te vinden was.
iv) Ralph Wijers waarschuwt ervoor de La Palma reis voor prijswinnaars niet (te zeer) te
verdunnen met “betalende reizigers”, de NNV scholieren.
v) Marieke Baan stelt voor de NAC conferentie interessanter te maken voor journalisten, door
een persconferentie en persdag te organiseren, en te zorgen dat er genoeg nieuws kan worden

gepresenteerd. Discussie volgt. De ALV is het hier mee eens; Marieke Baan en de organisatie
2014 gaan dit uitproberen.
vi) Christoffel Waelkens meldt dat de NAC regelmatig verzoeken krijgt van zusterorganisaties
voor het organiseren van gezamenlijke meetings. Hoewel we daar in principe voor openstaan
blijkt dit moeilijk te combineren met het (student) karakter van de NAC. Voor de Montpellier
meeting zal wel een NL afgevaardigde worden gevraagd (en een Franse spreker voor onze NAC
worden teruggevraagd).
Daarnaast ontvangt de NAC verzoeken zich in EAS verband actiever op te stellen. Aangezien
Nederlands beleid niet door NAC maar door NCA/NOVA worden uitgezet, is de juiste
representatie niet altijd duidelijk. ALV stelt voor dat een NCA/NOVA/NAC persoon volgende
keer expliciet aan Thierry Courvoisier vraagt wat het doel is.
vii) Harry van der Laan wijst er op dat Cees de Jager een interessant en leerzaam blog bijhoudt,
en hij bedankt Prof. De Jager voor zijn inzet.

APPENDIX B
Jaarverslag 2013 van de secretaris
Eind 2013 telde de Nederlandse Astronomenclub 446 leden, waarvan 28 leden in België, 288
leden in Nederland en 130 leden in het buitenland.
Dit jaar bestond het bestuur van de NAC uit Prof. Dr. C. Waelkens (voorzitter), Dr. J. van
Leeuwen (secretaris), Dr. J. Lub (penningmeester), Prof. Dr. P. Barthel (onderwijsassessor), Prof.
Dr. I.A.G. Snellen, Prof. Dr. M. Spaans, Dr. J. Vink en Prof. Dr. G. Nelemans (assessoren).
De kascommissie voor controle jaar 2013 werd gevormd door Wim Hermsen (vz) en Ralph
Wijers.
Leden wordt verzocht ter betaling van de jaarlijkse NAC contributie een incasso-machtiging te
verstrekken om administratie werkzaamheden tot een minimum te beperken. Ter aanmoediging
wordt €2 korting op de contributie geboden. De alternatieve manier van betalen is via een
overschrijving.
Het afgelopen jaar werden een ALV vergadering en de jaarlijkse Nederlandse Astronomen
Conferentie gehouden. De 228e ALV vergadering werd gehouden op vrijdag 18 januari 2013, op
de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De 68e Nederlandse Astronomen Conferentie werd
georganiseerd door U Gent / KU Leuven en vond plaats te Lommel, België, van 15-17 mei 2013.
Dit jaar heeft de NAC de volgende subsidies toegekend:
€ 500 ten behoeve van de 6e Nederlandse Sterrenkunde Olympiade, een wedstrijd voor
middelbare scholieren in de bovenbouw HAVO/VWO, georganiseerd door de Nederlandse
universitaire sterrenkundige instituten. Dit jaar was de organisatie in handen van Groningen.
€ 915 ten behoeve van NAC-beurzen voor de NAC conferentie in mei 2013.
Het NAC bestuur dankt allen die aan het clubleven hebben bijgedragen door hulp bij de
organisatie van vergaderingen, het optreden als spreker, het werk in commissies, of op een
andere wijze.
