Geschiedenis
De geschiedenis van Vega Sicilia ontstaat in 1864
met een voor die tijd ongekend revolutionaire stap.
In dat jaar sticht Eloy Lecanda het wijngoed en
importeert
18.000
stekken
van
Cabernet
Sauvignon, Malbec, Merlot en Pinot Noir uit
Bordeaux. Die stekken plant hij op de finca van
zijn vader, iets ten oosten van Valladolid. Een
lange opvoeding op barrique en houten foeders
volgt. Pas in 1915 bottelt het domein zelf de eerste
Valbuena en Vega Sicilia.
Reputatie
Vega Sicilia vestigt zijn reputatie voorgoed in 1929
op de wereldtentoonstelling van Barcelona. Daar
krijgen de jaargangen 1917 en 1918 een
onderscheiding. Vanaf dat moment vergroot het
bedrijf zijn imago tot de huidige, haast
legendarische dimensies.
Investeringen
In 1982 breekt een nieuw tijdperk aan met de
overname van het domein door de huidige
eigenaar, de familie Alvarez. Onmiddellijk start de
nieuwe bezitter een omvangrijk programma van
investeringen in de wijngaarden en de kelders,
zonder daarbij het unieke karakter van Vega
Sicilia aan te tasten. In dat jaar wordt ook de D.O.
Ribera del Duero ingesteld.
Verdere expansie
Na de succesvolle overname van Vega Sicilia denkt
de familie Alvarez aan verdere expansie. Ze gaan
op zoek naar de beste terroirs en voegen in relatief
korte tijd een aantal beroemde of veelbelovende
wijngebieden aan hun bezit toe.
Alion
In 1992 neemt de familie in Peñafiel Bodegas Liceo
over. Deze bodega was twee jaar daarvoor
opgericht in het hart van de D.O. Ribera del
Duero, een klein stukje stroomopwaarts. Daarmee
ontstaat Alion; een naam beladen met emotie
omdat het de naam is van de geboorteplaats van
de patriarch van de familie: David Alvarez.
Pintia
2010 & 2011 Beschikbaar vanaf 2015
In het wat minder bekende Toro sticht de familie
Alvarez in 1997 Pintia. Velen zien dit gebied als
een D.O. met een enorm potentieel voor kwaliteit.
Daarom koopt het bedrijf na een zorgvuldige
selectie zeventig hectare wijngaarden aan. De
state-of-the-art
kelders zijn na een lange tijd
bouwen eindelijk helemaal af. In Pintia streeft men
een variant na met naast de concentratie die bij
Toro
hoort
veel
elegantie,
een
moderne
persoonlijkheid en een explosie van aroma’s. Een
stijl dus, die niet zo rustiek is als de doorsnee
Toro.
Macán
Deze ‘nieuwe’ bodega, is een gemeenschappelijk
initiatief van de familie Alvarez van Vega Sicilia en
Edmond de Rothschild. De wijngaarden liggen in
de regio Rioja Alavesa en Rioja Alta, welke meer
wordt beïnvloed door het vochtige Atlantische
klimaat dan door de droge, typisch Spaanse
mediterrane patronen. De eerste vijf jaren wordt de
productie beperkt gehouden (60.000 flessen).
Terwijl het domein deze wijn al drie jaar maakt, is
de eerste officiële jaargang 2009 die medio 2013 in
Nederland debuteert. Zowel de Macán Clásico, de
basiswijn, als de Macán, de prestige cuvée, zijn
volbloed Rioja’s van 100% tempranillo. Er gaan
serieuze geruchten dat de wijn al direct tot de
absolute top gaat behoren.

De wijnen
Valbuena, Vega Sicilia
Valbuena is een grote wijn en bezit eigenlijk alle
karakteristieken van de Unico met alleen een wat
afwijkende samenstelling van de druivensoorten.
Voor de Valbuena gebruikt men een blend van
hoofdzakelijk Tinto Fino, gemiddeld 80-90%,
aangevuld met Malbec en Merlot, gemiddeld 1020%. De stokken hebben een minimale leeftijd van
20 jaar. Het team van Xavier Ausás doet grote
inspanningen in de wijngaarden om elke hint van
onrijpheid te voorkomen, terwijl men tijdens de
oogst ook nog eens zeer selectief te werk gaat.
Alvorens de wijn wordt gebotteld, heeft de wijn na
de gisting eerst 4 maanden gelegen in grote foeders
en vervolgens zo’n 16 maanden op nieuwe
barriques, om vervolgens tot de botteling weer in
grote foeders te rusten. Eén tot twee jaar
flesrijping is normaal.
Unico, Vega Sicilia
Unico wordt gemaakt van de alleroudste en beste
wijngaarden van de bodega. De stokken zijn
gemiddeld 35 jaar oud, en dat resulteert in een
enorme concentratie en groot potentieel om te
ouderen. In goede jaren bestaat de productie van
Unico uit een derde van het totaal. Het systeem
van houtrijping is, sinds Vega Sicilia zijn reputatie
vestigde, ongewijzigd. Totaal zo’n 6 jaar houtrijping
en daarna nog eens 4 jaar op fles. In uitzonderlijke
jaren kan de duur van de houtrijping oplopen tot
wel negen jaar. De blend bestaat gemiddeld uit
90% Tinto Fino en 10% Cabernet Sauvignon,
daarnaast is toevoeging van een klein percentage
Merlot niet ongebruikelijk. Wat altijd weer opvalt is
de enorm jeugdige uitstraling van Unico en de
prachtige wijze waarop de aroma’s van het hout in
de wijn zijn geïntegreerd.
Reserva Especial, Vega Sicilia
Deze jaartalloze wijn is de grootste wijn die Vega
Sicilia in zeer beperkte oplage produceert en wordt
samengesteld uit een selectie van tenminste drie
verschillende topjaargangen Unico. Het concept is
uniek in Spanje en mogelijk zelfs in de hele wereld.
De jongste jaargang is minstens tien jaar oud.
Alion
In
1992
wordt

Alion
overgenomen door de familie Alvarez en in 1994 is
het eerste jaargang een feit. De druiven zijn
afkomstig van 18 hectare Tinto Fino die direct
grenzen aan de bodega en verder afkomstig zijn
van eigen wijngaarden van Vega Sicilia in
Valbuena. Tussentijds zijn de kelders meerdere
malen aangepast. Men verving in 2000 de
roestvrijstalen gistingstanks voor eikenhouten
kuipen. In 2005 werd een geheel nieuwe bottellijn
in gebruik genomen.
Pintia
2010 & 2011 Beschikbaar vanaf 2015
Dit project van de familie Alvarez in het
opkomende gebied Toro heeft in het verleden het
nodige stof doen opwaaien. Naar verluidt stegen de
prijzen van de wijngaarden in het hele gebied toen
het gerucht ging dat de eigenaar van Vega Sicilia
bezig was de beste terroirs te selecteren. De familie
kocht 70 hectare wijngaard in de geselecteerde
zones. Een gedeelte daarvan is beplant met oude
Tinto de Toro. Hoewel dit een variant is van de
Tempranillo zijn er verschillen: de schil is dikker
en de druiven zijn kleiner. Hierdoor is de Tinto de
Toro beter bestand tegen de onbarmhartig
schijnende zon en hoge temperaturen overdag.
De kelder van Pintia bevindt zich in San Roman de
Hornija tegenover Bodegas Elias Mora. De eerste
twee oogsten 2001 en 2002 gooiden meteen hoge
ogen bij de ‘wine critics’. Pintia is uiterst beperkt
beschikbaar omdat de wijn van zeer oude stokken
wordt gemaakt. Pintia voedt men 12 tot 14
maanden op, op nieuwe eiken vaten van 70%
Frans en 30% Amerikaans eiken. Kenmerken zijn:
heftige concentratie met bakken rood en zwart
fruit, kruidigheid en vanilletonen van de vaten.
Macán
Soms moet het goede plaatsmaken voor het betere.
In onze portfolio van Rioja was dit het geval; een
samenwerking van Vega Sicilia met Benjamin de
Rothschild heeft dit gebied opnieuw op de kaart
gezet. Het idee ontstond na een ontmoeting tussen
Pablo Álvarez en Benjamin Rothschild aan het eind
van de 20e eeuw. In het diepste geheim werden de
beste wijngaarden rondom San Vicente de la
Sonsierra, Rioja Alta, van minstens 30 jaar oud
vergaard. De naam hetzelfde als de naam van de
inwoners van het bovengenoemde dorpje: Macan.
De combinatie van Bordeaux en Ribera del Duero,
Rothschild en Vega, zijn terug te zien in
verschillende aspecten: een eerste en tweede wijn
volgens het model van Bordeaux, maar het
importeursnetwerk van Vega werd gebruikt. Bij
beide heren is echter kwaliteit hetgeen waar het
om draait; om de beste wijn te produceren in de
stijl van het gebied met de bodem als
uitgangspunt. Het doel? De beste wijn van de Rioja
te gaan produceren, een alles-of-niets-instelling.
Vandaar ook de twee wijnen: alleen de beste
Tempranillo druiven verdienen de titel Macan. De
tweede wijn Macan Clásico is ook van zeer hoge
kwaliteit, maar wel de tweede wijn.
Vega Sicila is grootaandeelhouder van Macan en
kwaliteit die onlosmakelijk met dit icoon van
Spanje verbonden is, zal terug te zien zijn in de
komende jaargangen van Macan. Dus niet
getreurd als u dit jaar niet kunt proeven door de
zeer beperkte oplage!

Once the process of fermentation ended, the
wine spent 5 months in large capacity wooden
vats (20,000 litres.). The wine is aged in new
barrels, 50% American oak and 50% French for
16 months. Afterwards aged in semi-used
barrels for 4 months and finally again in the
large-capacity wooden vats for 6 months till
bottling in May 2012. For sale in 2014.

new barrels, 15 months in semi-new barrels and

just ripe fruits aromas. Long and very elegant palate.

Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia
The vineyards evolution over the 2010 year cycle
was very good overall with no significant
climatic or plague incidents. Excellent vegetative
and sanitary condition during all the year cycle.
During the stationary vegetative phase the
rainfall was 400 mm. Budding started as usual
at the end of March, flowering was a bit delayed
during the month of July with the result of some
irregularities in the bunch development without
much importance. August was dry favoring
maturation and a good sanitary state.
2010 Macán Clásico
The harvest took place between the 1st and 7th
October avoiding the intense rains starting on
the 10th October.

Vega Sicilia 2004 Unico

Moving on to the big guns, the 2004 Unico is
truly spectacular, in line with the 1970 and
1994. It’s a blend of 87% Tempranillo and 13%
Cabernet Sauvignon. Unico has a unique long
aging, in the case of the 2004, 15 months in
20,000-liter vats, 25 months in new barrels, 17
months in used barrels and a further 26 months
in the big oak vats. It has complex notes of
tobacco, cedar wood and blackberries, ands
shows very good balance between power and
elegance as well as perfect ripeness. It has a
similar profile to the 1994, but there’s ten years
difference
in
experience
and
technical
knowledge. There is nuance; there is detail,
filigree, balance, harmony and complexity. There
is a fine texture. In short, it is a great, worldclass wine, a superb vintage for Unico. 87,500
bottles, 2,229 magnums, 150 double magnums
and 5 Imperials were filled with this
extraordinary wine. This is approachable now,
but it’s a shame to drink so soon. It will age for
a very long time, as it has the balance and
harmony to do so, and it will develop more
complexity with time. Drink 2016-2029. But if
the single harvest Unico is fantastic, the multivintage blend could be even better as it also
plays with the benefit of extra aging time.
Vega Sicilia 2009 Valbuena
RP: 94
The 2009 Valbuena was harvested early, the
result of a warm summer. It’s mostly
Tempranillo complemented with 5% Merlot. The
wine matured for five months in 20,000-liter oak
vats, 16 months in new barriques (equal parts
French and American oak), four months in used
barrels and then four more months in the vats
before being bottled in May 2011. 180,000
bottles produced. It has some reductive notes
and would benefit from some time in a decanter,
were you’d start appreciating its background of
cherries which feels very classical and serious.
The palate is well-built, with polished tannins,
very good acidity and freshness with elegance
and fine tannins. Mature and with good typicity.
Drink 2014-2020.
Vega Sicilia Reserva Especial

Release 2014
The NV 2014 Release Reserva Especial is a
blend of different harvests, and therefore sold
without a harvest year. This 2014 Release is a
blend of 1994, 1995 and 2000, three very good
years for Unico. Reserva Especial is the most
Burgundian, classical and reminiscent of the
old-style Vega Sicilia of yesteryear, a more
subtle, baroque wine, aged for a long time in
wood. It has a high level of complexity and a
touch of volatility, which clearly tells you that
this is not a style for everyone. This is not a
fruit-driven wine. It’s a tertiary wine with a
developed, complex bouquet consisting of hints
of leather, earth spices and iodine, and a subtle,
elegant style This was bottled in 2010 and is one
of the best modern-day Reserva Especial
vintages. By the way now that we’re talking
about the best Reserva Especial, if you ever
have the chance to drink a bottle of the 1990
release – that is the best one I’ve ever had.
15,500 bottles of this prodigious wine were
produced. Make sure you grab at least one!

Alión 2011

The big news here is that the 2010 Alión will not
be released because there was a problem with
the fining leaving suspended sediment, that was
floating in the wine, which made it cloudy. They
decided not to release it. That means more than
300,00 bottles of wine will be destroyed, a hard
decision to make, but as they are committed to
offer only the very best quality to their
customers, they decided to release 2011 earlier
than normal and skip 2010 altogether. That’s a
brave decision, which implies a substantial cost
to the winery to preserve the quality of the
wines. I also tasted the 2009, which I had not
been tasted before.
The 2011 Alión is pure Tempranillo from
vineyards averaging 25 to 30 years of age,
harvested early (second half of September)
matured for 16 months in new Nevers barrels
(that’s a difference with Vega Sicilia; for Alión all
wood is French) It is an exuberant, ripe Alión,
with hedonist’s aromas that jump out of the
glass. Winemaker Javier Ausás tells me he likes
the wines when they are young and showy like
this one. It is indeed a showy vintage, whit
aromas of violets, molasses, cereals and a whiff
of malt whisky. We tasted the wine a little warm,
but that does not benefit the wine, which should
be served at 15-16 C and allowed to warm up
and open up in the glass. It’s also quite smoky,
with reminiscences of very good barrels, black
aromas, violets, black olives and fresh plums.
The palate is tannic with lactic and warm
flavors. This is a very exuberant, showy vintage
for Alión, and here I tend to agree with Ausás:
even though this has plenty of stuffing to age I’d
drink it young in its exuberant phase. 290,000
bottles produced. Drink now- 2019.

Emilio Moro, Ribera del Duero
Het familiebedrijf Emilio Moro is sinds 1892 in
Pesquera del Duero gevestigd. Deze bodega kan
bogen op een traditie van drie generaties en
omvat onder andere wijngaarden van meer dan
90 jaar oud. Door hun lange historie zijn ze in
staat geweest om hun wijngaarden heel gericht
uit te breiden met veelal Tinto Fino. De Finca
Resalso en Crianza blinken uit in zuiverheid,
elegantie en complexiteit. De top cuvées zijn van
zeldzame klasse; de zeer oude wijnstokken van
deze twee 'Pagos' geven een uiterst lage
opbrengst wat resulteert in zeer complexe
wijnen met een geweldige diepgang en
temperament.
2009 Malleolus de Sanchomartin
2009 Malleolus de Valderramiro
History:
Made with grapes from the Sanchomartín plot
located within the municipality of Pesquera de
Duero. A vineyard of one hectare, the wines
produced from this vineyard are tannic with a
marked acidity, which makes them ideal for
ageing in wood. It was planted in 1964 by
crafting stock, taken from the oldest family
vineyards.

History:
“Malleolus of Valderramiro” is made with grapes
from the Valderramiro vine plot. In this plot the
winery has three vineyards planted in 1924. The
yield from these vineyards is 2.500 Kg / ha and
the idea in the production of this wine is to
maximize the role to the “terroir”.
Process:
26 days of maceration in 3.000 Kg. vats,
malolactic fermentation in American oak barrels
and ageing in new French oak barrels for 18
months.

Tasting notes:
An intense, deep cherry-red colour. Complex
and elegant aromas, with subtle, floral notes
that accompany the liquorice, mulberry and
blackcurrant. The balsamic notes from the oak
are perfectly integrated into the ensemble of the
wine. On the palette it is warm and sweet, with
balanced acidity and a great quality tannin that
caresses the palette. A warm finish that goes on
forever
Tasting notes:
Intense ripe cherry-red colour, with dark tones
at the heart. The nose is opulent and intense,
dominated by black fruits and a marked
minerality, accompanied by toasted aromas of
fine oak. A great complexity of spicy and sweet
nuances. On the palate it is a powerful
ensemble, persistent with a silky tannin that
envelopes the palate. The finish is long and
persistent, and lingers on the palette.

2009 Malleolus de Sanchomartin

The 2009 Malleolus de Valderramiro comes from
85-year-old vines and is matured for 18 months
in new French and American oak. It received a
eulogy from my predecessor in barrel, and
although my own appreciation is more
tempered, I still regard it as a stupendous wine.
The oak is seamlessly integrated on the stylish
nose that offers hints of mocha and dark
chocolate to complement the brassy bold black

palate is full-bodied and just a little cloying on
the entry. It is decadent, structured and
voluminous, a bold intense wine with mouthlacquering luscious, almost viscous fruit on the
finish with fresh dates and cassis. It is
uncompromisingly primal and unyielding at the
moment and deserves several years in bottle.

2009 Malleolus de Sanchomartin

The 2009 Malleolus is sourced from 25- to 75year-old vines aged for 18 months in new
French oak. It has a rather predictable nose
with that veneer of glossy, vanilla-tinged oak
and yet you cannot deny that it is well-defined
and maintains good freshness, with the fruit
suggesting it will meld together with time. The
palate is ripe and voluptuous with sensual black
cherries, blueberry and layers of creamy oak on
the finish. Although it needs to develop more
individuality through its bottle evolution, it is
undeniably very well-crafted and will please
those who love opulent Ribera del Duero wines.
