Giovanni Giaretta Artist Talk
Een gesprek tussen film en video art
met Lorenzo Benedetti en Massimo Benvegnú
Donderdag 25 september, 20.30 uur
Istituto Italiano di Cultura
Keizersgracht 564, Amsterdam

Jean Painlenevè, Cecilia Mangini e Luigi Cozzi.

The Italian Institute of Culture in Amsterdam continues its series of artist talks with Italian video artists, who are asked to talk about their work in connection with suggestions generated by their favorite films and directors. The protagonist of the third artist talk is Giovanni Giaretta, who will present two of its most recent works (realized in 2011 and 2012), “Dans la Balaine” and “Untitled (Portrait study)”, along with sequences from films made by authors considered a source of
inspiration, such as Alain Resnais, Jean Painlenevè, Cecilia Mangini and Luigi Cozzi.
“Untitled (Portrait study)” documents the relationship between an entomologist with a few different species of butterflies. The gestures and the experience of
an entomologist create a narrative between scientific description, language of play and a choreography. “Dans la Balaine” was filmed inside the engine room,
which manages all the tanks in Milan Aquarium: a laboratory with blue lights, some details of natural landscapes and mountain peaks lit by cold neon lights.
Accompanying Giovanni Giaretta in this journey through images are curator and art critic Lorenzo Benedetti and programmer and film critic Massimo
Benvegnú. The series of artist talks, curated by Marco Nember, will continue in December.
