Vera Marijt (1989) is a Dutch jazz pianist who obtained
her Masters Degree in Jazz Piano at the Royal
Conservatory in the Hague, the Netherlands, in May
2014. She currently studies at McGill University in
Montreal, Canada.

Vera's appreciation for Jazz developed at a young age,
while she was listening to Diana Krall and got introduced
to the music of jazz icons such as Nat King Cole, Billie
Holiday and Louis Armstrong.
After reading a book about the life of pianist Bud Powell
and listening to his music, she got fascinated by the
Bebop style and was hooked and determined to conquer
the technique and language of this complex genre.

Upon ﬁnishing high school in 2007 Vera attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music in
Boston, USA for the summer which became her entrance into the world of jazz. In the Hague
she studied with the accomplished jazz pianist Juraj Stanik and participated in masterclasses
by Barry Harris, Branford Marsalis, Mike Manieri, Alan Broadbent, Hein van de Geyn, Rob van
Bavel and others.
Upon invitation to attend the annual International Association for Schools of Jazz (IASJ) at
Graz, Austria in 2012, she played with international musicians from all over the world and was
mentored by Dave Liebman and Hervé Sellin.

Vera Marijt performs arrangements of Jazz standards and originals at several occasions with
her own trio. She won prices at competitions such as the Leidse Jazz Award and the
Zoetermeer Jazz Concours.

Besides her own project, Vera played in the West Coast Big Band, in which she had the
privilege to play with some of the best musicians in the Dutch Jazz scene such as Ferdinand
Povel, Martijn van Iterson, Bert Boeren, Frits Landesbergen and Joke Bruijs. For years she was
a core member of Alice in Dixieland, a women's jazz band with whom she toured through
Germany twice.

While in the Hague, Vera began collaborating with fellow band members Camilla van der Kooij
on violin and guitar, and Oukje den Hollander on vocals in their trio called 'Mannekijn'. This
trio's repertoire includes original compositions and arrangements of existing music by

composers such as Jacques Brel, translated in Dutch. With this group she has toured through
the Netherlands in 2013/2014 and just released a videoclip, available on Youtube.

Vera and Oukje den Hollander have a long history of collaboration. Last April they performed
three nights in the famous Compagnie theatre in Amsterdam with the show 'Aria van een
Angsthaas'.

Vera is currently studying with Francois Bourassa and Rémi Bolduc at McGill Schulich of Music
in Montreal, Canada.

Vera Marijt (1989) is een Nederlandse jazz pianiste die in
mei 2014 haar Master Diploma in Jazz Piano behaalde aan
het Koninklijke Conservatorium van Den Haag. Momenteel
studeert ze aan McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Vera's waardering voor Jazz ontwikkelde zich toen ze als
klein meisje naar Diana Krall luisterde en werd
geïntroduceerd met jazz iconen als Nat King Cole, Billie
Holiday and Louis Armstrong. Na het lezen van een boek
over het leven van pianist Bud Powell, raakte ze
gefascineerd door de stijl Bebop en was ze vastberaden de
taal en techniek van dit ingewikkelde genre te beheersen.

Na de middelbare school in 2007, studeerde Vera een
zomer aan het prestigieuze Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. In Den Haag
studeerde zij bij de virtuoze pianist Juraj Stanik en volgde verschillende Masterclasses
bij muzikanten als Barry Harris, Branford Marsalis, Mike Manieri, Alan Broadbent, Hein
van de Geyn, Rob van Bavel, en anderen.

In 2012 werd Vera uitgenodigd om de jaarlijkse jazzbijeenkomst van The International
Association for Schools of Jazz (IASJ) in Graz, Oostenrijk bij te wonen. Daar trad zij op
met internationale muzikanten en werd ze gecoacht door Dave Liebman en Hervé
Sellin.

Vera Marijt speelt arrangementen van Jazz Standards en eigen materiaal met haar trio.
Ze won prijzen op concoursen als de Leidse Jazz Award en het Zoetermeer Jazz
Concours.

Naast haar eigen project, speelde Vera bij de West Coast Big Band. Met deze band trad
zij op met grote namen uit de Nederlandse muziekwereld zoals Ferdinand Povel,
Martijn van Iterson, Bert Boeren, Frits Landesbergen en Joke Bruijs. Ook maakte zij
jarenlang deel uit van de jazzformatie Alice in Dixieland, met wie zij oa twee keer door
Duitsland toerde.

Tevens zingt en speelt Vera in het trio Mannekijn, bestaande uit Camilla van der Kooij
(viool, gitaar, zang) en Oukje den Hollander (zang). Dit trio speelt eigen composities en
arrangementen van bestaande stukken van muzikanten als Jacques Brel, die in het
Nederlands vertaald zijn. In 2013/2014 toerde zij door Nederland en recent kwam hun
eerste videoclip uit.

Met zangeres Oukje den Hollander stond zij in april drie dagen in het
Compagnietheater in Amsterdam met de voorstelling 'Aria van een Angsthaas'.

Vera studeert momenteel bij Francois Bourassa en Rémi Bolduc aan McGill Schulich of
Music te Montreal, Canada.
