The colors of quarks and gluons, and confinement of quarks Kazuaki Sugiya June 7th, 2006 Shibata lab. Baryon and meson are composed of quarks. Quark interacts with strong force. Gluon is exchanged between quarks. gluon quark quark Color of quarks and gluons In QCD, quarks have color degree of freedom. There are three kinds of colors. Quarks R B G Gluons BG GR RB … and so on. Gluon has a color and an anti-color. There are eight kinds of gluons. Hadron and colorlessness • Baryon G R Colorless B • Meson Colorless G G Baryon has red, blue and green quarks. Meson has quark and anti-quark. They have color and anti-color. Hadrons are always colorless. Single quark cannot be extracted from hadron. It is called ‘confinement of quarks’ But… Single quark R B G ‘confinement These have single color. of quarks’ In the poster session, I will show details of colors of quarks and gluons, and confinement of quarks.
