Modeled Talk
Chapter 27
of
50 Strategies for Teaching English
Language Learners
by Adrienne Herrell and Michael Jordan
What is Modeled Talk?
 It is the use of gestures, visuals, and
demonstrations as explanations are
made.
 It is one of the best strategies used
for English Language Learners.
 It provides examples, gestures, and
visuals for learners that reduces the
anxiety students may have in
language learning.
Steps For Modeled Talk
1. Identify the lesson and gather materials. This may
include examples of differing steps of the project.
2. Practice your modeled talk. The gestures and body
language should emphasize what you are doing.
3. Design a visual of directions. This helps if there is a
sequential order in directions.
4. Review the steps to be taken. If the students are
having troubles refer to the visuals that have been
made for them.
