Future slogans for South Florida? Afew come to mind: "Where Business
is not a Beach." Thisfun slogan
speaks to the seriousness of doing
business in South Florida. We offer more than just a good time, and it is not hard to do business given the support mechanisms provided by government and education. For perhaps a more serious slogan: "Gateway to the World." South Florida is much
more than the Gateway to the Americas, given all the travel and shipping through our ports.' This slogan also speaks to thrifact that world is the limit when doing business in our community.

Ernest Hemingway once quipped: "Write drunk, edit sober." And long after his death, it's still
pretty applicable advice. Tonight the Miami Writers Institute is hosting an evening happy hour
for program participants and Miami locals interested in writing and publishing.
The Miami Writers Institute, part of the Center for Literature and Theatre at Miami Dade
College (MDC), is a twice-annual creative writing conference. The micro-courses range from
one to four days long and take place in November during the Miami Book Fair International
and in May after MDC's semester ends . And Wednesday, a new crop of writers began their
workshops on fictional and non-fictional topics ranging from graphic storytelling with George
O'Connor to poetry with Aimee Nezhukumatathil. Additionally, this year includes a
manuscript consultation workshop with literary agent Andy Kifer

Celebrating its tenth anniversary of workshops this year, the institute aims to unite
professional and nonprofessional writers and provide affordable, not-for-credit instruction to
help them improve their skills and achieve their literary goals. And with each edition of
courses, the group of participants diversifies even more.
Lisette Mendez, director or programs at the Center for Writing and Literature says, "The
Miami Writers Institute has really contributed to our city's reputation as a smart city that
appreciates culture. People also come from outside the area, from other states and that makes
me feel great! "
And because these workshops are attracting more and more people, The Miami Writers
Institute has organized a happy hour that's free and open to the public to encourage writers to
network, mix and mingle, and, of course, share their work.
Tonight, the workshops wind down with a free and open event - happy hour from 6 to 8 p.m.
at Books & Books' newest location at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami).
Participants are encouraged to head to ORB afterwards for live music and more drinks.
"Writers can feel solitary," she continues . "[This 1 event gives writers a place to write with
fellowship and refreshments and food . We do it free because we just want to provide an
environment to bring together people through a shared love of books and writing."
So get going and get drunk with some literary friends.

Acoustic Vibrostasiogenic Systems: VELO Training and Vibrational State Induction
Technology
Abstract:
The Scientific Mystery of Transplant Cellular Memory: Projectiological Hypotheses It has been said that explanatory power is a lithmus test of new scientific paradigms . The consciential paradigm sheds light on phenomena ... The authors of this work posit that acoustics can be applied in technology that aims to
facilitate the vibrational state and out-of-body experience and serve as a training aide for
the Voluntary Energetic Longitudital Oscillation (VELO) technique. This presentation
summarizes design, experimental, and theoretical aspects of the system in question,
including its relationship to vibroacoustics and vibrostasiology, and the results of a pilot
(n= 17) . Inspired by the collaboration on this project, the authors also present analogies and
technical speculation to motivate the field to arrive at a more profound definition on the
nature of bioenergy and the consciousness itself.

Rosa Salgado, una mujer
conmasdeSoanos,demos
trara que es un ejemplo de
fortaleza y perseverancia
al recibir su titulo univer
sitario en Educaci6n Ar
tistica el pr6ximo sabado
2 en Miami Dade College
junto a 14.000 otros gra
duandos, entre ellos dos
de sus nietos, despues de
haber sobrepasado fuer
tes obstaculos durante los
ultimos IS anos.
"Me siento contentisima
Salgado lJego al pais can
su esposo en 1995 desde Co
lombia, su pais natal, para
ayudar a su hija que ya vivia
en Estados Unidos, y menDs
de un ano despues de su
!lJegada se inscribio en el
I
program a "Ingles con prop&
sitos academicos", del MDC.
EI curso no fue gran pro
blema, ya que con dedi
caci6n logro aprobarlo y
mejorar su ingles basico.
Los verdaderos obstaculos
vinieron luego, cuando tuvo
que aprender a balancear
los recien iniciados estu
dios de Educacion Artistica,
juntoa trabajar6horasaldia
cuidan do a ninos de entre 3
meses a W1 ano en el Centro
de Cuidados Infantiles del
MDC para ayudar a mante
ner a sus tres hijos.
Al principio, el Centro de
Cuidados Infantiles estaba
ubicado en el recinto Wol~
fson de la institucion uni
versitaria, en el centro de la
ciudad, pero luego se movio
a un recinto ubicado en el
noroeste del Condado, 10
que agrego los largos viajes
en transporte publico como
una mas de las dificultades
que tuvo que enfrentar.
"Muchas veces me que
daba dormida en uno (de los
cinco 0 seis autobuses) que
tenia que tomar todos las
nochesytenrlinabaUegando
mucho mas tarde", comenta
Salgado, "Iuego, llegar a pre
parar la comida y ill dia si
guiente para levantarme en
Ia madrugada", explic6.
Durante el otono de 2005,
la hija menor de Salgado
sufrio un tragico accidente
que la dejo en coma por
largo tiempo. La condician
de su hija Ie obligo a reducir
su estatus en la universidad
de tiempo completo (12 cre
ditos por semestre) a medio
tiempo (seis creditos). A
pesar de las dificultades
que tuvo que enfrentar du
rante estos tiempos, pudo
concluir su trabajo acade
mico con calificaciones ex
celentes y se gradua con un
grado de Asociado, con un
promedio de 3.S.
"Algunos de mis com pane
ros de estudio javenes y mis
companeros de trabajo dicen
que soy W1a inspiracian", co
menta Salgado, "Ies sorpren
dia que alguien de mi edad
tuviera tan buenas califica
ciones. Me gusta la idea de
que los jovenes vean que las
personas de edad somos ca
paces de trabajar y de es
tudiar y me gusta que las
personas de edad me vean
como ejemplo", aseguro.
