In its place, they want to build luxury apartments. Art fans had hoped to have it preserved as a city landmark, but the developer had forged ahead before the paperwork had been submitted. The developer told the New York Post that it had to be done, but, as an art lover, he had had tears in his eyes when he made the decision. Alligator tears, some would say. The tradition of street art (or vandalism depending on one’s perspective) has long played an integral part in urban life, whether back in the days of imperial Rome or in the modern cities of today. More than just spray-painting names or abuse on a public surface, it takes the form of striking, surprising, often provocative images — the scruffy, playful cousin of the often obscure artwork found in the rarefied, well-heeled world of contemporary art galleries. By its very nature, it has a subversive, anti-establishment, anarchic edge. And you only have to look at artists such as Banksy to see it’s gaining quite a following. Banksy, an anonymous British street artist, recently took up a one-month residency in New York, causing a flurry of excitement. Images stenciled onto walls appeared around the city and the figure of Hitler appeared in a painting in one shop window. He even set up a stand in Central Park to sell his artwork (he found it sold poorly, presumably because no one believed they were real). ストリートアートの本質はどこに Street art gives a city a vibrancy that’s hard not to love (unless perhaps you’re the owner of the wall on which it’s appeared) and it’s wonderful to see so much of it on show in New York. But as it becomes more mainstream, it is in danger of undermining itself. When works of street art start fetching hundreds of thousands of dollars, you have to wonder. And as much as it’s sad to see 5 Pointz pulled down, there is something that seems to run against the ephemeral nature of street art to have it preserved as a landmark. So, as much as I feel a pang when I see something by, say, Escif covered in graffiti or pulled down by construction workers, I’m comforted that that’s what’s supposed to happen.
