After the impressive lecture on the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta we turn
our attention to another cause for celerating. This is the celebration of
Shakespeare`s birthday, a tradition that started in Stratford, when – in 1769 –
the famous Shakespearean actor David Garrick organised a week of
festivities in Shakespeare`s honour.
Garrick`s Jubilee set an example to the people of Stratford who then decided
to celebrate the birthday of their native son themselves in 1826, and this
custom continues until the present day. Crucial to this was the foundation of
the Shakespeare club of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1824, now the oldest
Shakespeare club in existence, it helped during a period of nearly 200 years
develop the celebrations from a local to an international event.
This illustrated lecture tells the story of this club and how Straford-upon-Avon
has celebrated Shakespeare`s birthday.

Dr. Susan Brock is an Honorary Fellow of The Department of English at the
University of Warwick and of the Shakespeare institute, University of
Birmingham where she was a librarian from 1978 to 1993. She has worked at
the University of Warwick since 2005, where she supported numerous
projects exploring and introducing innovative learning and teaching across
the disciplines, including most recently „Shakespeare on the road“ and
„Multicultural Shakespeare in Britain 1930-2010
She has been serving on a wide range of committees and associations
including the Shakespeare Club of Stratford-upon-Avon.
