“For me the biggest skill one can
have is the ability to turn attitude
into a certain commodity.”
Mr. CHALAYAN, you have been a professor in the
Fashion Department since last autumn and the
“Show Angewandte” is not only the highlight of
your first year, but also marks its end. What are
your thoughts in this regard?
What do you think is
(especially) important
for teaching in a creative
field such as fashion?
Where do you obtain
the inspiration for your
own collections?
04
It truly feels as if someone
has fast forwarded the
clock, time has passed
very quickly. It’s been
a year of understanding
how the system works at
“Angewandte”and how to
engage with the students
and the rest of the team.
The most important thing is to help the students develop a cultural world view, whilst
not loosing sight of the skills and discipline
they need to develop in order to turn their
vision into a technical and a desirable reality.
My collections are part of
an ongoing landscape that is
continually evolving. I react
constantly to what I have worked
on previously via the introduction of new themes, which I feel
will always challenge me …

Is it important to
focus on a special
type of consumer?
In this climate you don’t need to have just one type of
consumer, but in order to create a focal point it makes
sense to work on a selected variety. However, for me the
most exciting situation would be to generate completely
new customer profiles which don’t actually exist.
If you compare the present fashion world with that when
you started your career, what are the differences confronting a young fashion designer of today? And what are
the skills that a young fashion designer must acquire?
The biggest difference from the time when I
started my career is the presence of digital
media, speed of communication, the effect of
celebrity culture and arrival of celebrity designers and generally the numbers of people
who want to be designers, which is probably
at one of the highest levels ever seen.
For me the biggest skill one can have is the
ability to turn attitude into a certain commodity,
whilst creating originality, technical capacity
and desirability matched with the capacity to
communicate strongly and clearly.
How do you like Vienna?
Vienna before I knew
it well was always about
nostalgic continental
life and the glories of the
past. As I am getting to
know the city better, I feel
that Vienna has a strong
sense of curiosity, and
an evolving dynamic international life forming an
exciting platform where
quality, authenticity and
innovation can create new
connections.

The Essence 15
The University of Applied Arts Vienna considers generating ideas, devising concepts,
implementation and presentation as central parts of the programme. The main endeavour
focuses on the development of each student’s individual artistic/creative potential.
Understanding design includes an awareness of the responsibility for cultural, social,
ecologic, economic and political trends.
Graduates of the Fashion Department will find their qualifications useful to work as
fashion designers at existing national and international labels and/or fashion houses,
or they will found their own fashion labels.
How to enter
Candidates will have to take part in an entrance exam.
The entrance exam is divided in two parts:
— Submission of a portfolio on 22nd of February 2016
The best portfolios will be selected by the professor of the Fashion Department.
— Selected candidates will have to prove their aptitude during a test from the
24th to the 26th of February 2016 at the Fashion Department.
Finally selected candidates will start their fashion studies on October 1st, 2016.
Please find more information about the content of the portfolio, submission and
the entrance exam at dieangewandte.at ►Institutes ►Design / Fashion
