Mentoring
for Humboldt Graduate School
Members, Postdocs, Individual
Doctoral Candidates and Students,
who are interested in a PhD
January 2015 – December 2015
Welcome to
Humboldt Graduate School
The aim of the Humboldt Graduate School is to provide young researchers with
an excellent framework for their work by offering a broad and comprehensive
education. Our offers are primarily designed for doctoral candidates of our
member programs. Doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin who
are not a member of Humboldt Graduate School, are also welcome to participate last minute. With our offers we intend to support young researchers in
managing their dissertation project, enhancing key competencies and defining
career goals.
The Excellence Initiative enabled us to enlarge our program of workshops that
are open to all doctoral candidates of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and free of
charge. Those cover topics that mainly support the doctoral process.
We also have special offers for postdoctoral researchers but they should feel free
to participate in workshops that are announced to doctoral candidates in their
third year of PhD studies.
New is that some offers are provided “on demand”. These will be scheduled if a
sufficient number of interested doctoral candidates and postdocs request it.
In the knowledge that providing good care is required for a successful doctorate, the Humboldt Graduate School also provides supervisors the opportunity to
professionalize for this demanding task.
Let yourself be inspired by our brochure to join the appropriate workshop.
Should you have special wishes or suggestions, we will be happy to respond. We
would be delighted to support you and wish you every success with your projects.

Willkommen an der
Humboldt Graduate School
„Open to all“ Angebote stehen Themen, die grundlegend den Promotionsprozess
Neu werden Workshops „on demand“ angeboten.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Time-management is not something static: it
needs constant course correction to match your
current situation, especially during a PhD. In
this training you learn not only principles and
techniques of time-management, but also selfcoaching tools that make this constant course
correction possible. The goal: to approach your
time-management issues in a solution-oriented
manner.
We first discuss the basics of self-coaching
and start practicing right away. We discuss
working habits, task-management systems,
office organization and more. We analyze “time
thieves” like procrastination, perfectionism, and
interruptions. We approach the topic of timemanagement step by step: looking at long-term
planning, medium-term planning, and your
day-by-day working schedule.
At the end of the workshop you will have a clear
idea of self-coaching, the transferable skill par
excellence that can be applied to all areas of
your life. You will have specific ideas for solving
your time-management challenges. Combining
self-coaching and a whole toolbox of timemanagement principles and techniques, you
will approach future challenges in a pragmatic,
goal-oriented way.
This is not a writing course of the conventional
kind. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on
your self-management during the writing process: How to motivate yourself to write? How
to feel well during the writing process? How
to make decisions and plans you can stick to?
How to get your writing projects done in time?
During the one-day workshop we explore these
questions in a relaxed and open atmosphere.
We analyze your approach to your writing
projects and find pragmatic alternatives for
the areas that need improvement. With help of
scientifically proven methods you will find and
activate your own motivation to write. You learn
how to harness your creativity and your “inner
critic” to your advantage. Typical problems like
procrastination, writer’s block or a lack of confidence in your results are discussed.
In a follow-up session we discuss practical
problems found during the implementation
phase. We reflect on what went well and what
additional fine tuning is needed. You leave the
course with clear goals and renewed motivation.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
When does the deletion of a band on a blot constitute misconduct, or even fraud? What about
selecting and reporting a very unusual result as
being representative of the data? How should I
react if I have the suspicion that scientists in my
laboratory environment are ‘behaving badly’?
In our seminar we will discuss the topics listed
below. My ultimate goal for this seminar is to
sensitize you to the issue of good scientific
practice, and explore what it means for your
own work.
Do you want to have more impact when delivering a presentation? Do you want to deliver your
message with more clarity, build more connection with your audience, or do you simply want
to be able to be more relaxed and ‘yourself’
when speaking to groups?
For those people who already feel comfortable presenting, we work to strengthen your
confidence, developing your ability to be more
authentic and have more professional impact
when you speak. For those who experience

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The main aim of this workshop is to develop a
critical awareness of presentation techniques in
order to make informed decisions and optimize
personal style. It is therefore essential that
participants receive not only verbal feedback
from the trainer and each other, but also see
themselves presenting on video.
Do you have difficulties getting certain things
done? Do you sometimes wonder why you “run
around the whole day” and still feel like you got
nothing done? Do some of your “to dos” just
wander from list to list? This program is for
those of us who tend to leave things for later, to
not get started until the deadline looms threateningly over our heads.
In this program you actually get things done. We
won’t only talk about the “whys” and “design
strategies”: you are actually going to work on
your to dos and get them off the list. The core
of the program is the “get it done session”, a
special kind of coworking designed to improve
your focus and motivation.
An introductory 1-day time-management
workshop includes the first practical “get it done
session” and lets you experience the method and
understand why it works. Besides, you learn techniques to improve your performance between the
sessions. During two more virtual “get it done sessions” (you participate from your office or home)
you keep working on your projects while practicing
the techniques until they feel like second nature. In
the final follow-up we discuss what went well and
what still needs to be improved. We work through
all topics and wishes of the participants with
group coaching. You leave the program with a new
motivation and concrete, tailored solutions.
CONTENT
• Assess own presentation strengths and

Candidates in the 2nd or 3rd year of PhD studies
OBJECTIVES
Attending academic conferences makes many
young scientists and scholars anxious. Yet conferences play a crucial role in their future career.
It’s the goal of this workshop to help younger
conference participants to increase both confidence and personal skills and to significantly
decrease the stress factor.
PART I: PRESENTING AT
CONFERENCES
CONTENT
• refining one’s own talk or presentation they
have prepared in advance,
• giving the presentation, and
• using body language influentially and with
success.
Alongside these aspects, participants develop
a solid foundation so that they can prepare
and give talks that are both professional and
authentic. The first step is to discover personal
speaking and body language behavior patterns.
Participants learn how best to form and present
their presentations. They will heighten their own
self-perception, and finally, set concrete goals in
areas that need improvement.
PART II: COMMUNICATING AT
CONFERENCES
CONTENT
Communication in professional forums is often
decisive for future career options. This workshop helps participants to meet people with an
attitude that is both adequate and self-confident, in informal situations (“socials”) as well
as in academic discussion settings. Both verbal
and non-verbal strategies will be considered.
Participants will learn:
• how to identify players, roles and goals in
conference settings,
• how to “play the rules of the game”,
• how to initiate and encourage small talk,
• how to talk to decision-makers,
• how to build and maintain professional
contacts and
• how to act self-confidently in discussion settings (plenary, sessions).

Part II: 21.04./ 03.11.2015
Candidates in the 1st or 2nd year
of PhD studies
OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Time-management is not something static: it
needs constant course correction to match your
current situation, especially during a PhD. In
this training you learn not only principles and
techniques of time-management, but also selfcoaching tools that make this constant course
correction possible. The goal: to approach your
time-management issues in a solution-oriented
manner.
We first discuss the basics of self-coaching
and start practicing right away. We discuss
working habits, task-management systems,
office organization and more. We analyze “time
thieves” like procrastination, perfectionism, and
interruptions. We approach the topic of timemanagement step by step: looking at long-term
planning, medium-term planning, and your
day-by-day working schedule.
At the end of the workshop you will have a clear
idea of self-coaching, the transferable skill par
excellence that can be applied to all areas of
your life. You will have specific ideas for solving
your time-management challenges. Combining
self-coaching and a whole toolbox of timemanagement principles and techniques, you
will approach future challenges in a pragmatic,
goal-oriented way.
This is not a writing course of the conventional
kind. Our focus is on you, the writer, and on
your self-management during the writing process: How to motivate yourself to write? How
to feel well during the writing process? How
to make decisions and plans you can stick to?
How to get your writing projects done in time?
During the one-day workshop we explore these
questions in a relaxed and open atmosphere.
We analyze your approach to your writing
projects and find pragmatic alternatives for the
areas that need improvement. With help of scientifically proven methods you find and activate
your own motivation to write. You learn how to
harness your creativity and your “inner critic” to
your advantage. Typical problems like procrastination, writer’s block or a lack of confidence in
your results are discussed.
In a follow-up session we discuss practical
problems found during the implementation
phase. We reflect on what went well and what
additional fine tuning is needed. You leave the
course with clear goals and renewed motivation.

OBJECTIVES
All academic writing is about more than just
your research findings. Besides the content,
every author has at least two other aspects
to deal with. First, language. Of course you
want to write in a clear, concise and elegant
manner. Your mind is filled with great ideas,
but whenever you write something down, it is a
world away from the perfectly crafted language
in the articles of the journals you read. Second,
the process. Whenever you sit down to actually
write something, you get a rising feeling of
panic. In this 1,5-day workshop, you will find out
how to continuously improve your writing skills
and how to organize your writing process. We
will talk about writing, reflect on our own writing
habits, share successful strategies with each
other and work with our own and others´ texts.
This seminar focuses on supporting young

OBJECTIVES
This seminar covers the requirements of writing
specific English, from structuring the paper
according to standards in the humanities and
social sciences; including essential elements in
the introduction and conclusion; writing coherent paragraphs; and incorporating key words
and concepts into the text. We also analyze
abstracts and titles, and discuss publishing
strategies such as journal analysis, writing
submission letters to editors and responding to
requests for revisions. Finally, we implement the
theory of sentence revision by correcting writing
samples of the participants.
CONTENT
• write an introduction that captures their
readership’s attention by stating the central
thematic concepts of the paper, and a conclusion that restates the claim and solution;
• revise their paper’s structure, sections, paragraphs and sentences according to English
language norms;
• analyze journals in their field to find the best
fit for their paper;
• build in transitional elements to aid their
readers’ comprehension;
• craft an attention-getting yet appropriate
abstract and title;
• write successful submission and revision
letters to editors;
• revise their sentences using practical and
easy-to-understand revision strategies (such
as making subjects short and concrete characters in a story; putting actions into verbs,
avoiding excessive nominalizations; putting
old before new information, etc.);
• use important English grammatical principles
(such as using articles properly, avoiding
dangling modifiers, pruning unnecessary
verbiage, and creating parallel structure).

• Understanding the reviewing process for
grant applications
• Gaining practical experience in writing and
evaluating grant applications
• Obtaining an overview over funding agencies
and funding opportunities
Participants will be asked to prepare a short
“mini-grant application” (4 pages + Scientific CV)
in preparation to the course, which will be due approx. 5 days before the start of the course – please
take this into consideration when planning participation in this course. These applications will be
evaluated by other participants individually before
the course and in an evaluation session within
the course and each participant will also evaluate
3-4 proposals by others in the 4-5 days before
course start. This will provide extensive feedback
for all participants on their applications, but most
importantly, will provide a clear impression of the
situation and the view of potential evaluators.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The very beginning of our philosophical tradition in presocratic times is almost inextricably
connected with the distinction between knowing
and believing, and since Christian theology has
amalgamated with ancient philosophy the notion
of “believing” has become either opposed to
(“credo quia adsurdum”) or connected with the
notion of “knowing” (“credo ut intelligam”). In
modern times the distinction between knowing
and believing gets increasingly more technical –
especially after the “linguistic turn” (R. Rorty).
The lecture course develops both the historical
genealogy and the systematic mutual influences of these notions focussing especially on
the similarities within the differences between
knowing and believing.
The objective of this graduate course is to familiarize the participants with the main aspects
of the scientific and/ or philosophical debate
about time.
40
CONTENT
Since the middle of the 19th century, three genealogies of reflection on time have developed:
1)the scientific genealogy (thermodynamics
and theory of evolution),
2)phenomenological and anthropological
aspects of time and
3)the linguistic approach to ordinary language
with respects to time.
The lecture course deals with these and other
aspects of the thematic questions.

widmet sich einer Frage, die unterschiedlichste
Wissenschaften ebenso bewegt wie die aktuelle
gesellschaftlich-politische Diskussion.
The colloquium will provide and discuss information on classifying, systemizing and searching knowledge for your research work.
CONTENT
In the permanently increasing information
and knowledge flood knowledge management
seems to be appropriate lifebelt concerning and
scholarship. But how could knowledge management be defined and implemented? Is knowledge management our best approach to survive
facing the masses of published materials? Or
does knowledge management indicate the state
of ignorance affecting all of us as members of
the information society? Knowledge management is rooted in classifying and systematizing knowledge, and it includes methods and
strategies to identify or to search for reliable
knowledge. Finally knowledge management is a
necessary requirement to organize the ongoing
research work and the publication of research
results. For further information please contact:

Good Scientific Practice
Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis
Good Scientific Practice is an attitude of mind that becomes an attitude to work. It is about the way
in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and the fruits
of research are disseminated, applied and exploited. It allows ready verifications of the quality and
integrity of data, transparent basis for the investigation of allegations.
Research responsibility! What are
the rights and obligations of doctoral
students?
Beginning with 2015 we will be closely corporating with Dahlem Research School, Freie Universität Berlin and Potsdam Graduate School,
Universität Potsdam. This corporation allows
us to expand and vary our offers and tailor them
to specific disciplines. We will offer the series
twice a year. It is open to all doctoral candidates
and postdocs from all disciplines. The costs will
be covered by the Excellence Initiative. Please
register to any part separately. You will receive
more detailed information via email and on our
homepage.
PART 1 | TALK

When does the deletion of a band on a blot constitute misconduct, or even fraud? What about
selecting and reporting a very unusual result as
being representative of the data? How should I
react if I have the suspicion that scientists in my
laboratory environment are ‘behaving badly’?
In our seminar we will discuss the topics listed
below. My ultimate goal for this seminar is to
sensitize you to the issue of good scientific
practice, and explore what it means for your
own work.
Was ist eigentlich Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis?
Was genau bedeutet das Urheberrecht für
meine Forschungsarbeit?
Last but not least: Gute Wissenschaft
ist gute Dokumentation.

OBJECTIVES
Technologies to exchange data are advancing
rapidly (e.g. cloud computing, Dropbox). However, data protection laws remain and personal
rights need to be respected. It is important to
be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know
how to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to
tackle both aspects. Initially, an overview about
national and international data protection laws
will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated
and tested by the participants. Furthermore
tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The
course concludes with a discussion round about
scientific data sharing policies: „Data hugging
versus open access“.
The participants get an overview of the German
science system, of the doctorate, and their role
as doctoral candidate.

OBJECTIVES
We usually think of leadership as a process of
top-down influence from supervisors to their
followers. Yet, for an effective collaboration,
followers should be actively involved in the
leadership process.
This seminar will teach you how to lead effectively from your position as a Ph.D. student.
This two-part course offer includes one day of
interactive workshop. Through a combination
of theoretical input and practical exercises you
will learn to apply a number of helpful tools that
enhance your interaction with your supervisor.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Although introversion and extroversion are well
known and widely used in personality tests, there
is no training that helps academics apply these
attributes to their professional communication.
Introverted and extroverted persons, however,
have very different ways of communicating. In
academic settings, both personality types face
their own challenges: This workshop addresses
these issues for the first time in Germany and
is unique in its design. It helps young scientists
to understand both their individual advantages
and their needs as introverts or extroverts and
to cope with specific communication challenges
that come with their own personality type or with
the preferences of their communication partners. A special focus on gender role expectations
and self-perception is added.
Writing a review article in early stages of the
PhD-project has several advantages. The aim of
this workshop is to provide you with the skills
needed for writing high quality reviews. You learn
to organise dispersed information, to design
knowledge maps and to plan text structures.
Time-saving techniques are trained and you are
encouraged to start immediately with your writing
project.

OBJECTIVES
This seminar provides information on where to
look for postdoctoral positions and academic
positions, how to write a CV/resume and cover
letter, and how to prepare for academic and
industry interviews. On the first day, we focus
on writing CVs/resumes and cover letters for
academic and non-academic positions, but we
also discuss other kinds of other application
materials and where to find job announcements. On the second day, we discuss
preparation for different kinds of interviews,
interview questions, illegal questions, and the
STAR method for answering behavioral-based
questions; then we will hold mock interviews,
with each participant playing the role of the
candidate meeting with a “search committee.”
If time permits, we also practice small talk and
the elevator speech.
• discussed other application materials that are
often required (such as research statements,
teaching portfolios, writing samples, and letters of recommendation);
• gained a wealth of information about where
to find job announcements;
• practiced networking techniques that can
greatly increase their chances of landing a job.
CONTENT

UNSER ANLIEGEN
funktionieren in manchen Betreuungsprozessen

Treffen ohne externe Begleitung statt.

Termine:
Dauer:
Termine:
Jährlich (Termin auf Anfrage)
Eintägig, ggf. mit Follow up
Dauer:
exzellenten Forschungsarbeit beitragen? In
einem ersten Schritt wird das aktuelle Wissen
über Bedingungskonstellationen und Praktiken
vorgestellt.

Kontexten eng verbunden. Die Beratung ist
vertraulich.

anmeldet
ON DEMAND
AUF NACHFRAGE
Should a sufficient number be interested in one
of the followíng workshop topics or coordinators of our member programs like to offer their
doctoral candidates or postdocs a special topic
that is not scheduled, they should get in touch
with us. Based on the needs, we design and
organize the workshop with a qualified trainer.
Should interdisciplinary exchange be requested
we can announce the offer to the other member
programs and allocate free spots.
In this category we present some recommendations. However, it is always possible to request
additional topics that might be relevant for
the interdisciplinary qualification of doctoral
candidates. We can then assess the possibilities
of arranging workshops accordingly.
Following our program coordonators’ suggestion, we will be offering a welcome- and
orientation-day this year to new research
students of our member programs for the first
time. For “Getting started – Mastering your PhD
project”, coordinators will apply together with
their doctoral students and are also joining for
the morning activities. In the afternoon the doctoral candidates have time to focus on their first
steps as junior researchers. We will be offering
this welcome- and orientation-day on a regular
basis, if required.
Please contact me for further questions or to
discuss your ideas.
„Getting started – Mastering your PhD project“

OBJECTIVES
ZIELE
Starting to work on the dissertation is a challenging and important phase. The doctorate should be
seen as a project that needs to be accomplished
within a certain time frame. This workshop is designed to support and guide doctoral candidates
from the very beginning of their studies.
On the morning of the first workshop day,
experts of the Humboldt University will present
their different fields of competence. The aim is
to introduce doctoral candidates to the many
services available, and to point out when and
where to seek their assistance.
In the afternoon a workshop will be held, focusing on the participants’ individual dissertations
and dedicated to: the first steps, time and
project management, the doctoral dissertation
agreement, and the supervision. Six months
later we will take time to assess the first months
working on the dissertation during a half-day
session. If necessary, additional or new means
of managing occurring issues will be developed.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
Why does your Asian colleague never say no
and why does this drive the others mad? Speaking „good English“ is not enough anymore. We
also have to understand and engage with challenges of working across cultures.
In this two-day workshop you will be provided
with the chance to learn how to deal with tricky
situations caused by intercultural differences.
Besides stereotypes and clichés you will learn
about the latest methods to deal with your
personal critical intercultural incidents. After
day one of this workshop you have two weeks
to test your newly acquired skills. On day two
of this workshop your findings will be put into
a manual.
In this workshop you will analyze the most
common difficulties and areas of conflict that
arise in international projects and intercultural
encounters discussing case studies and real life
examples. You will reflect on your own conduct
in an international / interdisciplinary working
environment. The second day will be dedicated
to dynamic team processes and team roles in
the working environment. At the end of the
seminar you will give and receive detailed feedback to and from one of the other participants
on your team skills, the impact you can make on
cooperation within a team and the potential you
can tap into.

OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
This seminar provides information on where to
look for postdoctoral positions and academic
positions, how to write a CV/resume and cover
letter, and how to prepare for academic and
industry interviews. On the first day, we focus
on writing CVs/resumes and cover letters for
academic and non-academic positions, but
we also discuss other application materials
and where to find job announcements. On the
second day, we discuss preparation for different
kinds of interviews, interview questions, illegal
questions, and the STAR method for answering
behavioral-based questions; we will hold mock
interviews, with each participant playing the role
of the candidate meeting with a “search committee.” If time permits, we also practice small
talk and the elevator speech.
Slidewriting helps you reach a wider audience
in your discipline. Slides are a scientific communication standard, yet they are often too
numerous and hard to understand. This training
teaches the theory and practice of concise and
easy-to-understand slides. Importantly, you will
apply all techniques to your very own research
results. Ultimately, you will gain a complete
draft of your own next presentation.

CONTENT
• Goal: Visualize your own research project in
at most 10 slides
• Use cases: Graduate School Presentations,
Conferences, Disputations, ...
• Focus: Many practical exercises with your
own research results
• Important: Please bring pen and paper to this
training, but no laptops

Angebot für
Promotionsinteressierte

Good Scientific Practice
Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis
Good Scientific Practice is an attitude of mind that becomes an attitude to work. It is about the way
in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and the fruits
of research are disseminated, applied and exploited. It allows ready verifications of the quality and
integrity of data, transparent basis for the investigation of allegations.
Research responsibility! What are the rights
and obligations of doctoral students?
Beginning with 2015 we will be closely corporating with Dahlem Research School, Freie Universität Berlin and Potsdam Graduate School,
Universität Potsdam. This corporation allows
us to expand and vary our offers and tailor them
to specific disciplines. We will offer the series
twice a year. It is open to all doctoral candidates
and postdocs from all disciplines. The costs will
be covered by the Excellence Initiative. Please
register to any part separately. You will receive
more detailed information via email and on our
homepage.
PART 1 | TALK
“What is Good Scientific Practice?”
Duration:
in the summer semester:
2 hours
in Englisch
The two-hour introductory talk provides an overview of the range of areas in which young scientists can come into contact with the subject. The
goal should be to develop a sense of what “Good
Scientific Practice” is. You will also learn which
regulations in case of potential misconduct are
common at the Humboldt-Universität.

OBJECTIVES
ZIELE
When does the deletion of a band on a blot constitute misconduct, or even fraud? What about
selecting and reporting a very unusual result as
being representative of the data? How should I
react if I have the suspicion that scientists in my
laboratory environment are ‘behaving badly’?
In our seminar we will discuss the topics listed
below. My ultimate goal for this seminar is to
sensitize you to the issue of good scientific
practice, and explore what it means for your
own work.
Was ist eigentlich Gute wissenschaftliche Praxis?
Was genau bedeutet das Urheberrecht für
meine Forschungsarbeit?
Last but not least: Gute Wissenschaft
ist gute Dokumentation.

OBJECTIVES
Technologies to exchange data are advancing
rapidly (e.g. cloud computing, Dropbox). However, data protection laws remain and personal
rights need to be respected. It is important to
be aware of potential threats exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know
how to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to
tackle both aspects. Initially, an overview about
national and international data protection laws
will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated
and tested by the participants. Furthermore
tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The
course concludes with a discussion round about
scientific data sharing policies: „Data hugging
versus open access“.

Career Mentoring for Doctoral Candidates
Karriere-Mentoring für Promovierende
PEER MENTORING –
INDIVIDUAL CAREER PLANNING
PEER MENTORING –
INDIVIDUELLE KARRIEREPLANUNG
The aim of this program is to assist doctoral
candidates in choosing an appropriate career
path. As it is impossible to provide one standard career solution for such a highly educated
and specialized target group, we want to offer a
program that will enable you to further develop
your own career-planning skills. As well as
acquiring a general overview of the current
labour-market situation, you will have the
chance to define your individual goals, skills and
preferences. You will also receive valuable help
on where to find information on your career options and on how to evaluate this information.
WHAT DOES PEER MENTORING
OFFER DOCTORAL CANDIDATES?
Our Peer Mentoring Program connects you with
other doctoral candidates, as well as with career
experts and young professionals, thus providing
support as you set out on your career path.
PROCEDURE (6 months)
• Career Planning Workshop
• Three moderated group meetings
(approx. 3 hours)
• Preparation of a Career Prospects Day
(young professionals from interesting fields
of work will be invited)

ONE-TO-ONE-MENTORING
ONE-TO-ONE-MENTORING
The One-to-One Mentoring Program is designed
for doctoral candidates in our member programs
after 1.5 to 2 years of PhD studies with a broad
yet clear aim. One-to-One Mentoring is based on
interaction between an experienced professional
in a chosen career field and a doctoral candidate. One-to-One Mentoring supports doctoral
candidates in their transition from their current
position to their next career phase.
bekommen. Es ist außerdem eine Chance, die
eigenen Ziele und Talente zu reflektieren sowie
die nächsten Schritte zu planen.

Coaching
INDIVIDUAL COACHING
EINZELCOACHING
A doctoral candidate may encounter particular
challenges while writing his or her PhD thesis,
especially during the final stages. Coping with
stress or frustration as well as time management
could become increasingly difficult and it might
lead to a writer’s block or conflicts within a team.
In such situations, individual coaching could be
beneficial.
• Coaching is a method of consulting with a focus on development and addressed to those,
who seek to improve their way of approaching challenges.
• The aim is to observe the situation closely
so that the doctoral candidate is inspired to
develop a specific plan of action.
• The focus of coaching is not to discuss the
questions concerning the subject matter or to
provide informed advice but rather lies with
communication and the process of reflection.
The Humboldt Graduate School works with
coaches, who have gained various experiences
in the field of academia and are therefore
especially suited to help doctoral candidates.
A doctoral coaching usually comprises three to
five meetings.
• Fachliche Fragen bzw. Ratschläge stehen
beim Coaching nicht im Mittelpunkt, sondern
Reflexion und Kommunikation. Lösungen
werden nicht vorgezeichnet, sondern durch
den Ratsuchenden entwickelt.
Die Humboldt Graduate School arbeitet mit
Coaches zusammen, die insbesondere im
Wissenschaftsbereich über vielfältige Erfahrung
verfügen und daher besonders geeignet sind, mit
Doktoranden und Doktorandinnen zusammenzuarbeiten. Ein Promotionscoaching umfasst in
der Regel drei bis fünf Termine.

Conflict Consultation
Konfliktsprechstunde
CONFLICT CONSULTATION
KONFLIKTSPRECHSTUNDE
The relationship between doctoral candidates
and their supervisors is usually very positive
and based on trust. However, this does not
mean that there will never be situations, in
which opinions can differ fundamentally, so
much so that it might be helpful to consult
an external party. To help solve such issues,
regular conflict consultation hours are offered
for each doctoral candidate of the HumboldtUniversität. This way, serious problems between
the doctoral candidate and the supervisor may
be resolved in advance, so that the basis for
continuing to work together constructively can
be re-established.
These consultation hours will be offered by
trained mediators and are free of charge. The
consultation hour will be held at the Humboldt
Graduate School, Luisenstraße 56 in Berlin- Mitte, or – if necessary – it can be held in
Adlershof as well.
The consultation hour usually takes place
once a week. Please make sure to register first
via e-mail ([email protected]) or
telephone: 030-2093-1702 or 0172-2357086 (Dr.
Regina von Schmeling). Upon registering you
will be informed about the time and room number for the consultation. Complete confidentially
is promised.

HUMBOLDT SENIOR ADVISOR
HUMBOLDT SENIOR ADVISOR
Funding to allow young Researchers access to
benefit from their expertise
Förderung, damit Nachwuchswissenschaftler/
innen von ihrer Expertise profitieren können
When leading senior researchers retire, universities are losing valuable expertise in terms of
knowledge and experience. The aim of providing
funding for Humboldt Senior Advisors is to
allow young researchers access to benefit from
this expertise. Complementary to Senior Professors for supporting teaching, Senior Advisors,
e.g. provide guidance on research projects,
serve as mentors for young researchers, or act
as contact persons for non-university projects
promoting young researchers.
Target Group
Deans or managing directors of institutes at the
Humboldt-Universität can submit a proposal, as
well as groups of at least three junior researchers together with the designated Senior Advsior.
The latter must submit their proposal via the
relevant faculty.
