In the first version of Consolations the third movement was a style hongrois piece whose thematic material was later used by Liszt in his Hungarian Rhapsody No. 1 (published in 1851). The first version of Grand solo de concert shows that the work did not originally include a slow middle section to be recapitulated towards the end as seen in the final version. This is a characteristically Lisztian feature that would reappear a few years later in his Sonata in B minor. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English, and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles, and critical notes, makes this volume of the New Liszt Edition an important publication of immense scholarly value. Along with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a paperback version for practical use has also been published. On the one hand, they are of an educational character; they aim to provide guidance for left-hand accompaniment in various musical styles, linking of chords, harmonizing the melody to be played by the right hand while achieving a rich sound. On the other hand, when played at a high standard they also make great performance pieces. Theoretical and instrumental skills at the upperintermediate level are required to play the pieces, therefore they are recommended primarily for advanced music school students and secondary school students. They are also ideal for the musician interested in high-quality popular music in addition to classical or folk music studies. Passing away and a will to live are simultaneously present in Concertino, which Árpád Balázs composed in memory of his beloved father. Its structure brings Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies to mind. Its solemn opening (which returns at the end) is followed by a slow and a fast movement; the funereal music of the slow movement evolves from a motif from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion which intensifies in a manner similar to the lament in Grieg’s Peer Gynt. The pulsing timpani is featured significantly at the beginning and the end of the funereal music. The fast movement represents resolution, resignation, and regained gaiety. This part, pulsating like a waltz and echoing the modulation technique of Richard Strauss, is followed by the solemn return of the opening chords. This music ensures a thrilling experience for listeners and performers alike. In dem Werk, das Árpád Balázs zum Gedenken an seinen geliebten Vater komponierte, sind Vergänglichkeit, Lebensbejahung und Lebenswille gleichermaßen zugegen. Sein Aufbau erinnert an die Ungarischen Rhapsodien Franz Liszts: Seiner feierlichen Einleitung, die am Ende des Werks wiederkehrt, folgen ein langsamer und ein schneller Satz. Die Trauermusik des langsamen Satzes entfaltet sich aus einem der Motive der Matthäuspassion Bachs, und zwar mit einer solch gewaltigen Steigerung, dass sie dem Lamento aus Griegs Peer Gynt würdig ist. Am Anfang und am Ende der Trauermusik kommt der den Herzschlag imitierenden Pauke eine bedeutende Rolle zu. Der schnelle Satz erklingt mit der Stimme der Erlösung, der Beruhigung und des wiedererlangten Frohsinns. Dem auf die Modulationstechnik von Richard Strauss verweisenden Thema im Walzertakt folgt die feierliche Wiederkehr der Einleitungsklänge. Orchester wie Publikum wird beim Spielen und Hören dieser die Seele berührenden Musik ein dramatisches Erlebnis zuteil.
