What is a Health Visitor?

The health visitor is a registered nurse with
special training in public health and the
assessment of health needs of individuals,
families and the community. They work as part of
a wider team which can consist of staff nurses
and nursery nurses and with other professionals
such as speech therapists, dieticians and social
care.

What does the Health Visitor do?
The aim of the service is to deliver the following through the
Healthy Child Programme (DoH 2009) which includes:
• antenatal contact
• new birth visit within 10-14 days
• 6-8 week assessment
• 1 year assessment
• 2-3 year assessment
• universal health promotion.
However this list is not exhaustive and the team can also offer:
child development advice/support
behaviour management
feeding advice/issues
speech/hearing concerns
vision concerns
sleep management
immunisation advice
transfer in visits
general support
safeguarding e.g. recognition of indicators of child abuse and
vulnerability.

The World Health Organisation recommends that healthy babies
should be weighed:
• Fortnightly up to 1 month
• Once a month up to 6 months
• Once every 2 months from 6-12 months
• Once every 3 months over 1 year (however most children do not
need to be weighed this often after that)
