Appointed to serve as President and CEO of Partners HealthCare International (PHI)
in 2011, Gilbert H. Mudge, Jr., MD, is a global health expert, a Professor of Medicine at
Harvard Medical School, and a world-renowned cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s
Hospital (BWH) specializing in heart failure, cardiac transplantation and mechanical hearts.
His international career has spanned more than two decades and includes developing
clinical sub-specialty programs, quality initiatives and educational programs throughout
Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Prior to assuming his current international responsibilities with Partners HealthCare, Dr. Mudge
served in a variety of leadership roles at BWH, including Director of Clinical Cardiology, Director
of Cardiac Transplantation, Director of the Cardiovascular Fellowship Program, and Chairman
of the BWH and Partners Graduate Medical Education Programs.
Dr. Mudge graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and
completed his internal medicine training at Presbyterian Hospital in New York. He joined the
staff at BWH after completing his cardiovascular fellowship there in 1977. Dr. Mudge has held
numerous positions of national leadership, and has authored more than 130 publications.
