Infancy: Development from birth to age 3, 2nd Ed., Boston, MA: Pearson, Allyn & Bacon. The U. of I. bookstore has a custom edition of this text, which comes in paperback and omits 2 chapters. It has a green cover that says “The Pearson Custom Library Psychology”. The custom edition is cheaper than the regular edition, but you can use either. Additional required course readings: on e-reserve at: http://www.library.uiuc.edu/ereserves/querycourse.asp Course Description: This course provides an introduction to development from conception through the third year of life. In addition to introducing milestones and processes in physical, social, emotional, language and cognitive development in the first three years, this course will explore current issues such as the significance of infant development for later life, influence of culture and context on infant development, risk factors in development, modern research techniques in the study of infancy, and current conceptions of the various ways that biology and experience interact to allow human infants to acquire so much competence so rapidly. Course Requirements: Exams (multiple choice and short answer) (3): Short Essays (3) Homework (3): Participation 150 points (50%) 90 points (30%) 30 points (10%) 30 points (10%) 300 points Exams will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions and two short answer questions. The exams are not cumulative. Short Essays will require 2-4 page responses. Homework will require 1-2 pages of writing in response to structured questions. Some homework assignments involve interviewing parents. Participation points will be based on in-class assignments including brief writing assignments and group work. Participation assignments must be completed on the day they are assigned. They cannot be completed at a later time. Grading: A’s will start at 90%, B’s at 80%, C’s at 70%, D’s at 60%. Policies: (1) Make-up exams will not be offered unless the student can provide documentation (e.g. a doctor’s note) verifying that they were unable to take the exam. Emergency deans can provide documentation necessary to make up exams. (2) Late Homework assignments or Short Essays will be docked one-half percentage point for each late day (weekends count). (3) In-Class assignments must be completed in class on the day they are assigned, or turned in on their due date. They cannot be made up at a later time in case of absence. (4) Please do not use your laptop in class. Exceptions will be made to this policy for students who have disabilities and need laptops for note taking. See me if this applies to you.
