WACO Announces New Executive Director Olympia, WA – The Washington Association of County Officials (WACO) Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment of John “Scott” Blonien as the new executive director, effective January 1. Blonien brings more than 30 years of public service experience and is a respected leader, manager and consensus builder. His unique set of skills and experience includes an extensive background in organizational management, legislation and working with all levels of government. In his new role, Blonien’s priority will be to lead WACO’s efforts to significantly improve member services, including legislative advocacy, communications, and training and education opportunities. “We are delighted that Scott will be joining us as executive director,” said Carolyn Weikel, WACO Board President and Snohomish County Auditor. “He possesses the vision, skills, excitement and energy vital to WACO’s future success.” After graduating from Gonzaga University’s School of Law, Blonien began his career as the Klickitat County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. He spent 20 years working for the Washington State Attorney General’s Office in Olympia, and in 2008, he was named Assistant Secretary of Community and Government Relations for the Washington State Department of Corrections. He has served as the Director of Client Services for the Department of Enterprise Services Office of Risk Management since 2011. “I am privileged to work with the Association and all of its affiliates. I am looking forward to the great things that we can accomplish together” Scott said. WACO is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization comprised of affiliates for the assessors, auditors, clerks, coroners, prosecutors, sheriffs, and treasurers of Washington’s 39 counties. The organization strives to promote better county government, advocate for all members, and serve as a liaison with local, state, and federal governments.
