Made in the UK
The temperance movement began in
Preston in 1835 during the period of
the Industrial Revolution and was a
response to the widespread alcoholism
that existed at that time.
A Methodist cheese maker born in
Preston established a society under
which a pledge of sobriety was taken.
The society grew and expanded beyond
the churches to become part of everyday
life across the UK. Temperance Bars had
become the new social scene.
Mr Fitzpatrick’s
By the 1890’s temperance bars graced
every high street the most prominent
being Mr Fitzpatricks – a successful
family of Dublin herbalists who
established themselves in the North of
England and at their peak successfully
ran over 40 shops in the region.
After World War II interest in taking
the pledge faded. The end of prohibition
in the United States and the heavy
importation of sweet, sugary drinks
hitting our shores saw the decline of the
Temperance Bar.
However, one Temperance Bar survived
and today Mr Fitzpatrick’s still own and
operate the little Victorian bar situated
in the Lancashire town of Rawtenstall.
It still looks the same as it always did:
ceramic tap barrels, shelves lined with
jars of medicinal herbs, its roots in the
past whilst looking to the future.

Cascina San Giovanni
Suzanne and Carlos Gross moved from Switzerland to the Piedmont
in Italy more than a decade ago and this is the beginning of the story
of the Cascina San Giovanni range. Their vegetable garden provided
the produce for the first products which were made for family and
friends. Gradually local deli owners wanted to stock the products
and now many local farmers provide all the delicious vegetables
for the products. Over the years the operation has grown however
the recipes are the same and all the ingredients are farm-grown and
only the best raw ingredients are used.

CONISTON STONE CRAFTS
Coniston Stone Crafts is a family run business
providing a wide range products in slate which is
quarried locally in the Lake District. The business
has been manufacturing slate products for 30 years
and all of their products are still hand finished using
traditional skills. The workshop is situated on the
fellside above beautiful Coniston Water.
All of the slate boards are coated with a food
safe product and have 2 neoprene rubber strips
on the back to stop damage to table tops.
The products should be wiped clean with
a damp cloth.

HOW IT BEGAN
In 1993 Arvinda Chauhan started teaching Indian cooking classes, wanting
to share her culinary passions and Indian cooking traditions with others.
Through her classes, she quickly realised that her students were seeking high
quality Indian spice blends (also known as masalas) to save time in making
traditional Indian meals from scratch.
Arvinda blended, roasted and ground spices in small batches and sold them to
those attending her classes, with wonderful feedback; she was starting to gather
a loyal following. Even her two children, Paresh and Preena, who were in high
school at the time, were asked if she would consider selling them at local markets.
The seed was planted and the idea of creating a line of high quality masalas was
left simmering.
In 2005, while doing a Masters degree at York University, Preena had the
opportunity to start a business. So with her brother, Paresh, they decided to set
up Arvinda’s – exceptional Indian spice blends for exceptional Indian meals.

following here as well as in Canada and North America.
