Sky Watch: Wolf Moon
In early January, watch
the sky for the Wolf Moon.
Native Americans named the
month’s full moon phase for the
wolves who howled outside their
villages during the cold and
snowy midwinter.

A Figure of Speech
Hugs Are Healthy
Phrase: Living high on the hog
Meaning: Living a life of luxury
Origin: The best, most
expensive cuts of pork are taken
from the loin and upper leg,
which are higher on a hog’s
body. Therefore, those who can
afford pricey cuts of meat must
be wealthy.
Stretch out your arms and give
someone a squeeze on National
Hug Day, Jan. 21. Hugging
reduces stress hormones and
releases a soothing brain
chemical—and this reaction
occurs whether you’re giving a
hug or receiving one.

A Note From Your D.O.N.
Talk About It
Weather Wonders
January is known
for walloping a blast
of wintry weather into
many parts of the
country, but no
matter where you live,
there are occasional
weather extremes to
deal with. Use the
questions below to
start a discussion
about your extreme
weather memories.
What was the most
extreme form of
weather—snow,
floods, hurricanes,
heat—where you
grew up? Do you
have any memories of
particularly severe
occurrences? How
did you survive them?
When you were
younger, did the
weather in your
hometown ever
cause school
to close?
Have you
personally lived
through a large-scale
weather catastrophe
such as a tornado,
flood or hurricane?
What do you
remember most
about it?
January is glaucoma awareness
month. Glaucoma is the second
leading cause of blindness and
belongs to a group of eye diseases
that damage the optic nerve, leading
to vision loss. The underlying cause of
glaucoma is not understood but
typically is related to increased
pressure in your eye. Some risk factors
are over the age of 60, chronic
diseases such as diabetes and
hypertension, family history of
glaucoma, eye injury and
nearsightedness. The number one way
to prevent and treat glaucoma early
on is routine screenings at your eye
doctor. Other natural ways to
prevention are a healthy balanced
diet and exercise!
Make sure to keep those eyes
happy and healthy,

Nutrient of the Month: Folate
Folate, also called folic acid or
folacin, is a B-complex vitamin. One of
folate’s key functions is to support red
blood cell production and maintain
healthy circulation of the blood
throughout the body. Proper levels of
folate have also been shown to help
prevent osteoporosis-related bone
fractures and dementias including
Alzheimer’s disease. Excellent sources
of folate include romaine lettuce,
spinach, asparagus, beef liver, parsley,
broccoli, cauliflower, beets and lentils.
Summer squash, strawberries,
cabbage, bell peppers, Brussels
sprouts, tomatoes and a variety of
beans are also good sources.

What Have We Been Up to
at Weinberg?
Fun Facts about Elvis
While fans may always remember
him as a youthful heartthrob, Elvis
Presley would have celebrated his
80th birthday on Jan. 8 To mark this
milestone, here’s some trivia about
the entertainer known as the King of
Rock and Roll.
He was a twin. Elvis’ twin brother,
Jesse Aron Presley, died at birth. His
mother, Gladys, claimed that
because of this, Elvis had the energy
of two people.
Elvis as Tony? Film director Robert
Wise originally wanted Elvis to star as
Tony, the male lead in the hit musical
“West Side Story.” But Colonel Tom
Parker, Elvis’ business manager, felt
the role wasn’t right for the star.
He pitched one product. Though
his likeliness has been used in
countless ads and promotions, Elvis
himself made just one product
commercial during his entire career.
In 1954, he recorded a radio jingle for
Southern Maid Donuts, a favorite of
the King.
He had presidential DNA. Various
genealogy studies show Elvis was
distantly related to two U.S.
presidents, Abraham Lincoln and
Jimmy Carter.
Remember Me?
A special thank you goes out to the Girl
Scouts who came out to volunteer and
play games. Everyone had a
great time!
Rosa R. is all smiles learning how
to juggle.

Symphony of Lights performance at Wiregrass
Mall.
Elvis is in the Building!
Please join us Monday, Jan. 12 at 1:45
p.m. to see the show and to get your
picture taken with the King.
Whether he was
rockin’ on
“Bandstand” or on
New Year’s Eve,
Dick Clark was an
instrumental force in
entertainment. Here’s
more about the man
known as “America’s
oldest teenager.”
Clark was born
Nov. 30, 1929, in
Mount Vernon, N.Y.
He began his
career in the mail
room of a New York
radio station. He
worked his way up to
weatherman and
news announcer.
From 1957 until
1989, Clark was the
host of “American
Bandstand.”
Not just an on-air
personality, Clark
became a media
mogul by creating his
own production
company.
Since 1972,
Americans have been
ringing in the New
Year with “Dick
Clark’s New Year’s
Rockin’ Eve.”
He was inducted
into the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame in 1993.
