RC 2 GALLERY CAROLYN EVANS Carolyn Evans began her art career as a sculptor. In the early 1990s, she began experimenting with oils when, on a lark, she took a knife, dug into the gobs of paint on her husband’s palette and applied it to plywood. “I’d build a painting like I would build a sculpture,” she said. Evans’ paintings are “at once both deceptively sophisticated and disarmingly simple,” according to Daniel Piersol of the New Orleans Museum of Art. “Moreover, they are not the work of a naïve or untutored creator but of one trained in a traditional course of fine arts instruction.” He credits her with solving the problem first posed by Picasso of how to retain a child’s artistic ability after growing up. Katherine French, director of the Danforth Museum of Art, would agree. “Much has been made of the simplified shapes which Evans has used throughout her career.
